Committee Reports None New Business None Announcements ValerieF The Santa Clara Library is having a Comic Con. Free, adorable, kiddie, fun. October 12 - all day. Silicon Valley Authors will have a table there. (santaclaraca.gov/government/departments/library/events/comic-con <http://santaclaraca.gov/government/departments/library/events/comic-con>) She will be doing signing for her picture book Chelm for the Holidays at Books, Inc. It'll be across from where Tower Records used to be. JohnO Commissioner Bradford Lyau was presented with the Moskowitz Archive Award at Worldcon. file770.com/tag/sam-moskowitz-archive-award/ <http://file770.com/tag/sam-moskowitz-archive-award/> Reviews LisaH Saw Bette Davis Ain’t for Sissies at the 3Below Theaters. A one woman show, and the writer/performer really understands Bette. Try to catch it if it comes around to your area. Has been impressed with the 3Below’s guest artist series. 3belowtheaters.com <http://3belowtheaters.com/> HaroldH Hair Love – a short film (with a feature length cookie) – is a charming, heart-worming story of a father and daughter dealing with the absence of the mother, centering around the father trying to work with the girl’s afro-curly hair. The Angry Birds Movie 2 is an exercise at cramming as much humor into a movie as possible. Some of it doesn't work. But worth it to see Hair Love. ValerieF Was at Silicon Valley Comic–Con and did some speaking and signing. Nice con, but less programming than usual. Not much in the schedule once you remove the signing sessions. Be nice if the con could get back to where it was a couple years ago. JohnO: They apparently hired a new management company that doesn't know how to manage a con. Candace: The Silicon Valley Authors table did well, but the dealers room seemed lackluster overall (as other dealers were not doing as well.) ChrisO Her and John binged the anime series My Roommate is a Cat. It’s the story of an author who doesn't like to be around people and the cat that adopted him. The episodes are structured with the human POV in the first half, and the cat POV for the second. Very good. Japanese with subtitles. On Crunchyroll. crunchyroll.com/my-roommate-is-a-cat <http://crunchyroll.com/my-roommate-is-a-cat> Worldcon 77 Reviews JohnO Flew Aer Lingus. Helpful and courteous. Was up for nearly 36 hours by the time they got in to their accommodations in Dublin. Toured around Ireland before the con (a storm came in when boating around Skellig Michael.) Had lots of fun at the con. Was supposed to just photograph the Hugos and Masque, but there were some no-shows of other photographers so he was assigned other panels. Went to a couple panels, but don't remember them. Spider Robinson came late (after a dehydration issue) and had not been previously announced. (See John's FB for a write up). Sun at 10 a..m. the Library Bards performed - they still did a great job (despite the early show!) Finally saw the Doubleclicks live on Friday night! Masquerade was really good. 39 entries. Agreed with the Hugo voting results (they may not have been all his top picks.) The Campbell Award winner caused a bit of a stir. The convention center had an area set up as a pub named after Martin Hoare (Martin's) Always had people in it. Dave There were also a couple food trucks at either end, and a gin bar. Martin's did get quite crowded, especially during the Hugo’s–though the telly had no sound and relied on captions which were poorly produced (Cream of Thrones!?!) [JohnO: it was an AI captioning system, as you can see it thinking about the words…] Saw a few interesting panels. Convention center looked like the top of a JukeBox. Was a bit too small. Crowd flow was interesting. Small amount of photographers were in the masquerade’s fan photo area. Went to a panel by Mary Robinette Kowal: Rapid Fire Readings of Ignoble Award Winners. Ok dealers room, fine Art Show (a tram ride away) Food was meh onsite, people went to grocery stores. A lot of walking plus full Irish breakfast and managed to not gain weight! Beer and Cider at Martin’s was excellent. Was at the old farts party, and had a fun time watching James Bacon break down. ChirsO Really appreciate how they managed the crowd-flow chaos, with added seats for the holding areas for those who need it. Masquerade was run wonderfully by evilKevin with Dr.Chris as stage manager. She worked as stage ninja. Almost had a contestant walk off the front of the stage, but was stopped in time. Night time events had a line to get wristbands for the events (access people had a shorter line.) John Scalzi's dance made her dance, despite having no energy! Ric MC’d the Masquerade, and did Powerpoint Karaoke while the judges deliberated. Good time - exhausted. Auction The meeting was adjourned at 21:18, and the Rumor of the Week was: Still smaller than the Dublin meeting.
