You do have a penchant for hyperbole.

That feature works fine for me in BBEdit 10.5.10 (3375). If it has ceased to
work for you look in the Help under Expert Preferences and search for:

"By default, BBEdit calibrates the vertical scrollbar"

Adjust to your preference.

Personally I'd like to be able to reposition the edit line at top, middle, or
bottom with a keystroke, but it doesn't look like I'll get my way. :)

Hey Lawrence,

I'm using BBEdit 10.5.9 (3370), and I believe the majority of functionality you
speak of in your follow-up post has been lost.

Bringing up the palette now DOES give it focus though.

Extra space at bottom of window

2014-03-25 Thread genetastic
Is the option to add extra space at the bottom of an editor window missing
gone in the current version of BBEdit? I used to have this option enabled
to give me a half-window of extra space when scrolling to the bottom of a
window, but I can't find it any more. I am now forced, like some kind of
animal, to add a bunch of returns to the end of a document to restore some
semblance of sanity.

Re: Currently Open Documents

2014-03-25 Thread Lawrence San
Sorry to respond to my own post... but I just discovered that there are
"Windows" Preference items that affect the Windows palette. These include
checkboxes for "Group by window kind", "Auto-assign shortcut keys", and a
radio-button choice between "Sort by name" vs. "Sort by creation order".
Neat. Now if I only knew some way to give the Windows palette focus
(preferably by default, in the event that BBEdit has focus but all its
windows are docked)... then I could use the arrow keys to move through the
items listed in the palette, which would make it even more useful.

You can map a keyboard shortcut by opening Preferences, looking at the "Menu &
Shortcuts" tab, and then selecting the greyed out "Status Bar" option at the
bottom. You'll see "Line Breaks" on the right.

Is this something that was removed in BBEdit 10, or am I misunderstanding
your remark? In my copy of BBEdit 9.6.3, the Window palette automatically
displays Command-1, Command-2, etc. for the items listed -- the same
shortcuts as in the Window menu up top.

Unfortunately, they don't always display in that order. (For example, right
now the list from top to bottom says Command-1, Command-3, Command-2.) Even
after experimentally closing and reopening some windows I'm still not sure
what determines the order they display and are numbered in (some
combination of opening sequence, and files vs. projects, perhaps?). Anyway
the lack of intuitive ordering, while a very minor issue, means that I
can't respond after just a sideways glance to my second monitor; I have to
actually read the Command-number to the right of each document name in the
Windows palette to know what command-key to type, which makes it marginally
less useful.

I don't think this is how BBEdit handles all tags. I think it has something
to do with paragraphs usually being block elements. If you apply a list

Hey John,

Well, do something different.

As has been mentioned - use the Window-Palette.

I don't like to leave it open due to the real estate shortage on my MacBook
Pro, but I have it bound to a keyboard shortcut for convenient access.

(I do think the Window-Palette would be more useful if you could type-select
and pick a window from the keyboard. It already supports {Up/Down}-Arrow, so
I'm a little surprised it doesn't do more.)

OR

Roll-your-own:

---
try

  tell application "BBEdit"
set winNameList to name of windows
if winNameList ≠ {} then
set pickedWinList to choose from list winNameList ¬
with title "Windows Open in BBEdit" with prompt ¬
"Choose One or More:" default items item 1 of winNameList ¬
with multiple selections allowed
  if pickedWinList ≠ false then
repeat with i in pickedWinList
set index of window i to 1
end repeat
  end if
end if
  end tell

on error e number n
  set e to e & return & return & "Num: " & n
tell me to set dDlg to display dialog e with title "ERROR!" buttons
{"Cancel", "Copy", "OK"} default button "OK"
if button returned of dDlg = "Copy" then set the clipboard to e
end try
---

OR

Buy Keyboard Maestro, and use it to open the Window menu - and type-select from
there. (I have a global keyboard shortcut to do this in all applications and
use it all the time.)

I tend to use whichever one I see first.

Currently Open Documents

2014-03-25 Thread john
As a programmer I frequently need many documents open at the same time.
Therefore I need a way to manage the open docs and switch between them
quickly. Bbedit gives me the 'Currently Open Documents' (COD) pane to do
this.

Bbedit is a fantastic application in many ways and the COD window would be
a perfectly adequate way to manage and work on open files. But as it is it
makes me want to literally tear my hair out.

Why? Because it is nowhere near big enough and doesn't resize...

80% of the 'Files' pane is given over to a file explorer tree for finding
files to open.
vs 20% which is given to the files I am currently working on.

The COD window fits maximum 8 files. Am I alone or unusual in commonly
having probably twice this number open?

The COD window needs to be AT LEAST twice as high as it currently is. The
COD window SHOULD be resizeable - as should all the windows in the Files
pane.

Why has this simple but dramatically important fix not been included in the
last 6 updates Bbedit has been through since barebones first told me it was
on the list of things to do?

The COD window has very poor usability for professional users and is a
major flaw in an otherwise very fine piece of software.
