Quality of life

2015-12-04 Thread Jean-Christophe Helary
A bit off topic but I found this video of Rich Siegel through Daringfireball
earlier today and I thought it was great. I know it's old already.

https://vimeo.com/111903901

It was good to put a voice and a face on a name I only saw in support mails.
Thank you so much for what you're doing.

I started using BBedit in its lite version on System 7 back in the 90's when I
was writing my first professional web site. I learned regexp with it (I still
use the user manual as an easy to read regexp relatively general reference). My
decision to buy BBedit (now at version 10) a while ago was mostly to support
BareBones because I'm fine with what TextWrangler offers. I did not think much
about the reasons why BBedit left MAS and discovering this video today was
actually a surprise, but it convinced me to upgrade to 11 right now.

In my business (translation) we struggle to get proper rates for work that we
do as professionals. I turn down jobs almost everyday because the rates are too
low, or because the conditions would put too much pressure on our "quality of
life". When I outsource jobs, I make sure my partner gets proper deadlines and
a rate she's comfortable with, and processes that make it easy for the both of
us to work. It is not easy but anything less than that is a lose-lose
situation, if not in the short term, in the middle term, without any possible
doubt.

Thank you again, and I'm hoping that year outside the appstore has brought you
back all the things you expected.

[ANN] BBEdit 11.5 (3817) pre-release

2015-12-04 Thread Rich Siegel

Good morning folks,

We're working on an update to BBEdit 11 which will add some new
features and address a few recently reported issues.

Note that this is a _pre-release_ version. The intent is to fix
bugs and address areas of improvement based on what our
customers have reported. However, since the software is at this
point not fully tested, there _may_ be bugs and regressions. If
this prospect makes you nervous, then sticking with the public
release versions is your best course of action. Nobody will be
offended if you choose to do so; you're under no obligation to
install and use anything but a public release. :-)

Following is a summary of changes that have been made since the
previous pre-release build. Its notes are available here: .

The change notes are organized into additions, changes, and
fixes, and are annotated where appropriate with case numbers. So
if you recognize a number corresponding to a support case that
was opened for you, you can now verify that it's been fixed
correctly. Please take the time to review the changes before
using the new build -- it'll be worth your time.

One final note: If you run into a bug in a pre-release version,
PLEASE DO NOT REPORT THE BUG TO THE LIST. This includes asking
about whether others have seen the same problem. Instead, please
send a bug report to and we will deal
with it there. This will help us keep the list discussion on
topic and productive for all list members.

version 11.5 (3817) (2015-12-04)

Additions
-

o (none in this build)

Changes
---

o (none in this build)

Fixes
-

* [NFR] [316088] Fixed regression in which the sources panel
(brought up by using the "Choose" button in the modal
dialog box

for running a text factory) could not be dismissed.

* [NFR] [315921] Corrected fit-and-finish at the intersection of
the line bar/gutter and the navigation bar.

* [NFR] [316107] Admitted defeat and put in a special case for tab
calculations when using non-antialiased Monaco 9.

* [NFR] When setting the name of a document, use the "localized
name" of the URL if possible, to deal with unexpected OS
character substitutions (e.g. ":" for "/").

* [NFR] [316109] Corrected a case in which items in Text Factory
windows were not laid out correctly when the document was
initially opened or created.

* [NFR] The previous change to Clippings floater searching has
been undone, pending further refinement.

* [316092] Corrected various fit-and-finish issues in Differences
windows.

The package can be downloaded from our web server:

Enjoy,

Rich Siegel

Thanks for the link, Jean.

I must say, however, I was disappointed the video didn’t feature his parrots!

Re: Quality of life

2015-12-04 Thread Dave
I hadn't even noticed they'd pulled out of the app store. How 'bout that.

I've only been using BBEdit for about 12 years, and I've only had to
contact them for support maybe a half dozen times, and half of those were
probably feature requests, but knowing that they're there, and that they
will respond in a timely, professional and effective manner, has
contributed significantly to my quality of life.

Correction: I've been using BBEdit for 22 years. How the time flies.

Re: Word wrap

2015-12-04 Thread Oliver Boermans
For many years I have been using this little script from John Gruber for
cycling through text wrap options:
http://daringfireball.net/2004/10/bbedit_soft_wrap_toggling

Recommended if you have frequent cause to switch.
