[ANN] BBEdit 9.0

2008-08-28 Thread Rich Siegel

Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We are pleased to announce the release and immediate
availability of BBEdit 9.0. This is a major upgrade, and it's
got a pile of really cool new features. Some of the high points:

*   Projects

 A modern evolution of File Groups, BBEdit's projects
provide a great
 interface for working on related documents. The project window
 contains a full editing view, so you only need to open
documents in
 additional windows if you want to.

*   New Find Windows

 The UI for Find and Multi-File Search has been reworked, with
 modeless windows and a much nicer presentation. All the
power you're
 accustomed to is still there under the hood.

*   Text Completion

 Manually or as you type (as desired), BBEdit will suggest completions
 for what you're typing. Completions are derived from many sources,
 the change notes contain complete details.

*   Editable browsing windows

 Disk Browsers, results browsers (for searches and other operations),
 projects: all have text display views. In 9.0, these are fully
 editable document views, so if you're viewing a file in a browser,
 you can edit it there too.

*   Scratchpad

 A handy place to keep bits of text that you're working on.
 Auto-saves, always available from the Window menu.

*   "Find Differences" enhancements

 Better comparison results for files; and you can now review and
 apply differences that occur _within_ a line (instead of
having to
 apply a whole line or range of lines at once).

*   Support folder syncing

 If you use .Mac/MobileMe, you can now choose to keep your BBEdit
 application support folder synced. So your clippings,
scripts, etc,
 are always available no matter where you are. (And if
you're using a
 machine that isn't syncing, you can still get your most recent
 content from your iDisk.)

*   Language support improvements

 Enhancements to the Ruby, Python, JavaScript, YAML, and other
 factory supplied language modules. Too many to list here. :-)

*   "and much much more"

 The sheer breadth and quantity of the additions and changes
in 9.0
 defies description. As usual we've published comprehensive change
 notes on our web site.

Upgrades

If you're a registered owner of BBEdit 8.5 or later and you
bought after January 1st, 2008, you are eligible for a free
upgrade. We will shortly send email to the address that you used
when purchasing; please give us a little time to catch our
breath. :-)

Otherwise, all registered owners of any commercial version of
BBEdit may upgrade to 9.0 for US$30. Please visit the online
store at .

Change Notes

Comprehensive change notes for this update are on our web site:

(Oh yeah, did I mention we have a new web site?)

Enjoy,

We very much appreciate the catches, but if there are glitches
with the web site, they can be dealt with much more quickly if
they're sent to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

Thanks,

Howdy,

I just installed it on my system and it won't launch. Even removing
the BBEdit folder in ~/Library/Aplication Support/ and the BBEdit
Preferences folder in ~/Library/Preferences/ doesn't help and the
folders are not recreated. Clicking and holding the icon on the Dock
shows that the Application isn't responding and the only way out is to
Force Quit.

This is with OS X 10.5.4 on a MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM.

Good Luck,

Howdy,

Just downloaded the ``demo'' version and put in my new serial number

Thanks for the update.

For future reference (to anyone on the list), the
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> email address is the official place to report
problems. Given our current volume of mail, it's also the only place
we can guarantee any sort of timely response.

Enjoy the release.

Oh you, with your crazy notions of efficiency and the correct
reporting of issues. Just for that, the next problem I report will be
sent to your USPS address, and will be written in all-caps and in
crayon. OK, granted, that's not much different from my normal
meatspace correspondence, but this time I won't use my standard
salutation, "DEER CONGRESMUN!".
