[ANN] BBEdit 9.5

2010-04-27 Thread Rich Siegel

Good { morning, afternoon, evening },

We are pleased to announce the release and immediate
availability of BBEdit 9.5. This is a free upgrade for anyone
using 9.0 through 9.3.1, and includes a number of new features,
refinements to existing features, and fixes for reported
problems. The high points of this new version are:

* Live Search, which provides an incremental search bar in
editing windows;

*   Zip file browsing in disk browsers;

*   Enhanced AppleScript attachment points;

*   Improvements to document state storage and settings management;

* Lots of other little additions and changes to improve your
life with BBEdit in subtle ways.

A complete digest of the changes is available here:

 http://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/arch_bbedit95.html

If you're already using BBEdit 9 (or a demo), just choose Check
for Update from the BBEdit menu to get the update, or go to the
BBEdit updates page:

 http://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/updates.html

*** Please note that the system requirements have changed.
BBEdit 9.5 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later (10.5.8, 10.6.3 or
later recommended). If you are running an older version of the
OS, Check for Updates will not offer you the new version.

If you're using an older version of BBEdit, you can download the
9.5 demo from here to try it out:

Enjoy,

R.

2010-04-27 Thread Bucky Junior
I don't think I've encountered very many, if any at all of the bugs
that were fixed, but I do like the clarification of the UTF-8
designations.

The following UI changes have been made to text encoding selection:

Unicode (UTF-8, no BOM) has been renamed to Unicode (UTF-8).

Unicode (UTF-8) has been renamed to Unicode (UTF-8, with BOM).

The 30% speed increase is helpful too.

Looks great! I would suggest making this optional, at least by a defaults
write command:

When you first save a file which begins with a shebang line, BBEdit will
now make that file executable (a+x, as modified by the umask).

It doesn't necessarily affect me, but I could imagine a case were you
wouldn't want files being made executable behind your back.

That link shows:

 If you are using the expert preference to save state in the document's
 resource fork (rather than in a central location), please note that the new
 format state data is not actually saved in a resource anymore - it is now
 written into an extended attribute, which you can verify from the command
 line using @xattr -l /path/to/some/f...@.

I'm limited to OS 10.3.9 for other reasons so it doesn't matter right now but
that scares me.

I save BBEdit preferences for files in the resource fork with confidence that
when I use a simple cp or perhaps an scp or ftp of my file to a Windoze or
Ubuntu friend he will receive a faithful copy of the text without something
else appended or even, perish the thought, some plist format that obscures the
text with multiple line end characters as with a BBEdit worksheet.

If I copy the file to a backup Macintosh server, using a resource-preserving
method, will it open over a network with the preferences preserved?

Please add some comments with some more details about the change.

And tell me that @ sign in the command line above is only because I'm reading
this using Classilla on Mac OS 9.1 which likely has problems with unicode. It
looks like an AT sign in an email address to me.
