Close "open file by name" window on 'open'

2012-06-26 Thread Oliver Taylor
Is there a way to have the "open file by name" window close when I open
something? I love having fast access to the files but don't want that window to
remain open all the time.

In the meanwhile it's easy to Applescript this or hook Keymando up to
automatically close the window:

Hope this helps

+1. I don't understand why this window remains open after I have selected a
file.

Out of curiosity, why does it matter? (Asking for a friend.)

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.

Re: Close "open file by name" window on 'open'

2013-10-28 Thread Rick Yentzer
The main reason is that I typically have My document window open on the
left half of my screen and either a browser or an e-book on the right.
After I have used the Open file by name window it obscures my other
windows. I usually work on a 13" MBP.

I'll send a screenshot when I get back to the office.

Re: Close "open file by name" window on 'open'

2015-04-06 Thread Brian Porter
I found this thread searching for a solution to this myself. The "Open File
by Name" window stays open on my second screen, obscuring other
applications.

In my usage, once I've found and opened the file I'm done with that window
and want it gone. If I need it again, I'm likely to invoke the keyboard
shortcut again whether the window is already open or not.

just my additional 2 cents.

Thanks,
Brian

That's a very old thread :-) and there's an expert prefs option
to adjust this behavior; cribbing from the "Expert Preferences"
help page:

Windows and UI Tweaking

  [...]

  * By default, the "Open File by Name" window stays open when
you click
the "Open" button. However, if you would prefer for it to
act more

like a modal dialog, you may do so:

[ by issuing the following Terminal command on a single
line ]

defaults write com.barebones.bbedit
CloseOFBNWindowAfterOpeningSelection -bool YES

Thanks Patrick. It was definitely old, but I didn't turn up the expert
prefs documentation in my searching and so resorted to resurrecting
it. It's fantastic that it's available as a pref now.

And to boot; together we've probably helped everyone else who ever google's
this issue again in the future.
