Scary.

The reason I use BBEdit at all is that MPW doesn't work on OS neXt. Bare Bones
offers BBEdit worksheets which are a partial nod to good old MPW which is still
in use on this 8500 running OS 9.

I rarely use Finder here or on my OS neXt box which is limited to 10.3.9
because of my SE/30 file server.

What I do on my machines is to always have open either an MPW window, a BBEdit
worksheet or a gedit file. I have them set up to open automatically every time
I log in to X, startup OS 9, or login to Linux .

In those windows I keep command lines like:

open fullpath_to_some_text_file
open -a BBedit ffullpath_to_some_text_file
bbedit fullpath_to_some_text_file # The bbedit tool comes with BBEdit.
open -a Finder path_to_a-directory

In all cases that full path can be entered by dragging an icon from a Finder or
Gtk window into the worksheet.

You can collect items into sections of the text files and "mark" the sections
so they show up in a selectable menu associated with the worksheet. In MPW you
can alphabetize the marks.

Select the whole line - use BBedit's option to change the cursor to a right
pointing arrow when you're to the left of a line - and ENTER for BBEdit or MPW.
Use external tools menu with gedit.

You can even put a short section of Applescript code in the worksheet - use
osascript - and expect it to be executed with a select and ENTER. You'll find
some executable perl code in my Worksheets too.

I have ssh access to distant systems and I set up an scp into a temporary file
followed by a bbedit of the temp. It's still just a case of selecting a couple
of lines and poking ENTER or the way I use the mouse, poking the right button.
It's more flexible than BBEdit with its ftp option - well, that's my opinion.

In short, it's a way to eliminate Finder from your life except when you need it
for something other than opening files.

As for creator codes when SetFile -c 'R*ch' or 'MPS ' refuses to work in Linux
or 10.999 . . . .>

No, it's not my machine. It's a known bug in LaunchServices. The
initial attempt was to blame it on FileVault, but that's not the case,
as many sufferers don't use FileVault. The response from DTS (or
whatever they call themselves these days) was:

This is a follow up to Bug ID# 6158549. After further investigation
it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently
being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our
bug database under the original Bug ID# 5071918.

You can just do a search on the web for 'Mac OS X Leopard file
association stick' and read the litany of woe.

This is your machine, not Leopard (or Snow Leopard) as I run both systems on my
machines.

I've *never* had to reset associations unless I, myself, blew away the
LaunchServices database.

2010-09-09 Thread Mike Conley
LaunchServices and file association under Leopard is hopelessly
broken. Every time I reboot my machine, I have to manually reset all
my text file associations to use BBEdit. And, yes, I have a script,
and, yes, I reset LaunchServices every now and then, and, yes, this
works for a few reboot cycles, but, no, it doesn't stick, and, yes,
I'm thoroughly sick to death of it.

This is a known issue, and Apple has so far refused to fix it; the fix
went into Snow Leopard, but has not been back-ported. File a bug
report; maybe with enough complaints they'll eventually decide it's
worth fixing.

Sounds as though Launch Services (the part of the system which associates
files with applications) has developed a bit of indigestion. :-)

Try this: quit BBEdit, then relaunch it by double-clicking its icon in the
Finder (do not use the Dock or any utility).

If that doesn't do the job, a Launch Services reset is probably in order so
please ping support with your system version.

I think that you might try get info on a text file (Cmd i) and near
the bottom of the information panel under Open with: select the app
you would like and then choose Change All.

That certainly doesn't seem like a BBEdit issue. You say "Recently"; I
have to ask, what changed? Was there an upgrade or a new install or a
system crash or ... ?

You might try the standard voodoo for OS X -- that is, run Disk
Utility and let it do a repair disk and repair permissions.

Mac OSX Wants to Open All my Text Files in Terminal?

2010-09-06 Thread VikR
Recently OS X started showing all my text files as being "Unix
Executable Files" and belonging to the Terminal. If I do a Get Info on
one, select BBEdit in the "Open With" menu, and click Change All, I
get an error message saying, "An error occurred while changing the
application that opens “your_file” because not enough information is
available. "

Has anybody else encountered this? Thanks in advance to all for any
info.
