If you turn on Unicode Hex Input (System Prefs - Language Text - Input Sources), you can also 'type' them directly: e.g. option-0, option-0, option-0, option-9 (U+0009) yields a tab. This works, but boy is it annoying. Frankly, editing the file in vi and typing ^V^L or ^V^I is, maybe, simpler. -- Sometimes the gods have no taste at all. I don't follow how leaving the system character viewer open (once customised) and using that is more convoluted than leaving BBEdit's open and using it?
