Re: Why more food..

Food World food Production in Calories Per caput per day

Vegie Oil 10.2
Oil crops8.1
Animal fats 3.3
Sweetners 25.5
(inc honey,sugar)

As opposed to
Cereal1359.00
Fruit (excluding wine) 59.7
Vegies97.2
Meat 37.9

given that most of the "junk food produced in the world is produced from

food in the first categorylargely the world is still producing whole
foods
although if one looked around at the "Americanization" of the Australian
diet
and the increase in obseity in Australia, one would think that all we
produce food wise is crap.
Thank goodness there is a ground swell of support for BD and Organic
food
and it is increasing as people's awareness grows

Re: Why more food..

Dear List & Co a few figures for the bean coutners

On 1999 levels of "food" production each person in the world could
consume a daily intake of 2808 Calories. With Cereals making up
1359 Caloiries. There is no reason for people in the world to
starveit is a lack of distribution an age old problem of economic
and more pointedly "capitalism". The other major issue is inefficent
farming practices and land use, Australia
has one of the highest inefficencies in water and land useage, ironic in
the fact that we also inhabit the driest Continent on the planet.

http://apps.fao.org/lim500/wrap.pl?FoodBalanceSheet&Domain=FoodBalanceSheet&Language=english

AVERAGE CALORIE CONSUMPTION PER DAY (1999)
 Highest Lowest
 Ireland 3,873Ethiopia 1,610
 Greece 3,814 Sierra Leone 1,694
 Cyprus 3,779 Peru 1,882
 US 3,732Nepal 1,957
 Spain 3,705Tanzania 2,018
Source http://www.worldpaper.com/Observe/calendar/may99.html

WHO averge recommended Cal' per day per caput 2260
Females daily Cal' 2000-2500 (with most falling around 2300+/- Cal per
day)
Males dailyCal' 2200-3000 (with most falling around 2600+/- Cal per
day)

Given that babie, children, elderly and infirm consume under the above
levels there is more than enought food to go around...hence the oft
quoted figure of 2.5 times the amount of food produced than consumed.

Food wastage in Australia is exremely high espcially in the Urban areas
and we are contrary to popular myth the most Urbanized nation in the
world.

Whilst I agree...if one looks at grain figures alone there is more than
enough to go around the entire world.
The sooner we grow our own food and power our own houshold the better..

G-O's,
While I am not a scarcity 'scarier' I do feel compelled to point out
that IMHO most of that <<2.5 times more food>> is not really food.
Certainly ought not be food. Most of it will be industrial products poisoning
people & keeping the economic 'macheine' chugging along.
It can be demonstrated that even the apple from the supper market after
having been consumed buy some kid will leave them with a craving for hard
candy or a soda to give them the mineral / crystalline energies that the
body assumed it would get from that apple.
That is not nutrition that Middland making a buck.
If it ain't local, it's not sustainable and some-one's hands are in
your pocket.

Off: Life in perspective

2001-12-04 Thread Gentle Ox

Had this sent to myself by a friend and thought I would do the same...
Enjoy."Gentle" Ox

LIFE IN PERSPECTIVE

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his
son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how
poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm
of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from the trip, the father asked his son,

"How was the trip?"

 "It was great, Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father
 asked.

 "Oh Yeah" said the son.

"So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the
 father.

 The son answered:

"I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our
garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in
our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have
 the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they
have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve
 others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

 We have walls around our property to protect us;
they have friends to protect them."

With this the boy's father was speechless. Then his
 son added,

"Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."

Too many times we forget what we have and
concentrate on what we don't have.

What is one person's worthless object is another's
prized possession.

It is all based on one's perspective.

Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave
thanks for all the bounty we have instead of worrying about wanting more.
Take joy and appreciate every single thing you have,
 especially your friends.
