[beagleboard] Connection problems and questions

2013-12-20 Thread Jim Hodgers
Last night I was working on my BBB, using SSH with putty and VNC. I had to
reboot to test a script and when it came back both vnv and putty failed to
connect. I cycled power several times but each time there was no connection
except it showed up as a usb device in windows explorer. Since it was late
I shut everything down ans started back this morning. When I powered up
everything worked. Why does this happen? I also wonder about the choice of
connman, this seems way to complicated for such a small board. Also I would
like to change the screen size in x11vnc, but can not figure out how.

Jim

[beagleboard] Cross compile instructions for MT7601U (Logic Supply UWN200) Kernel Module for Beagles running Ubuntu

2013-12-20 Thread Corey McGuire
Hey all,

Here's my "Cross compile instructions for MT7601U (Logic Supply
UWN200)
Kernel Module for Beagles running Ubuntu"

Been searching for a decent Wireless Adapter (that MIGHT have a product
life cycle longer than that of a fruit fly) to include with a product I am
developing on embedded arm systems.

Right now, the UWN200 (MT7601U) from Logic Supply is fitting the bill.

I have found instructions on how to build the MT7601U driver natively on
the Beaglebone, but that's just silly. I am developing for the Beaglebone,
but I don't want to BUILD on the Beaglebone.

These are the steps I've taken to successfully build and use the MT7601U
module under Linux on an ARM system. They may be unclear, unrefined,
unorganized, and quite possibly unintelligible, but since the question
"How-to" seems to be asked a lot and hasn't been answered (I had to figure
this out all my self ;-) I thought I would post my steps.

I am interested in further refining this howto because I think this is a
killer component combo.

So far, I have gotten this adapter to connect to a WPA2 network on boot and
operate for 12 hours straight.

Enjoy!

Cross compile instructions for MT7601U (Logic Supply) Kernel Module for
Beagles running
Ubuntu

Ah, now I see what you’re doing. OK, so the patched Kbuild is in
ignore/ti-sdk-pvr/Graphics_SDK/GFX_Linux_KM/service4/3rdparty/linux_drm/Kbu

Why don’t you just update make.rules and then "make x x x", "make x x x

[beagleboard] Single Cape Connectors / wrong part numbers in SRM?

2013-12-20 Thread Ralf Roesch
I checked the data sheet against your cape connector table found in BBB System
Reference Manual A6.

Table 19. Single Cape Connectors
SUPPLIER PARTNUMBER TAIL LENGTH(in) OVERHANG(in)
Major League TSHC-123-D-03-145-G-LF .145.004
Major League TSHC-123-D-03-240-G-LF .240.099
Major League TSHC-123-D-03-255-G-LF .255.114

I think you should replace
- ...03-240... by ...06-240...
- ...03-255... by ...08-255...
- TAIL by POST

so we get:

SUPPLIER PARTNUMBER POST LENGTH(in) OVERHANG(in)
Major League TSHC-123-D-03-145-G-LF .145.004
Major League TSHC-123-D-06-240-G-LF .240.099
Major League TSHC-123-D-08-255-G-LF .255.114

regards
Ralf

[beagleboard] RS485 cape and UART on BeagleBone

2013-12-20 Thread telcred
Short problem description:
I'm trying to get my RS485 cape to work on a BeagleBone running Debian. I
can't receive any response from the slave device though sending works OK.

Longer description:
I am accessing my BB using SSH over Ethernet (not ttyO0). My BB is booting
from microSD with Debian (3.8.13-bone30 from armhf.com).

I have loaded BB-BONE-UART4 to the cape manager - all OK. I configure the
/dev/ttyO4 for 115200 / 8n1 using stty (confirmed correct settings for my
slave device), and I can send traffic by echo'ing to /dev/ttyO4. At the
other end of the RS485 line the slave device receives the command OK (I can
toggle its LED).

But the BeagleBone only shows the local echo of the sent traffic, *never
any response from the slave*. After the local echo I only see a
never-ending stream of junk characters repeating. To view the response, I
use the following script in a separate terminal:

stty -F /dev/${device} raw
stty -F /dev/${device} 115200
cat /dev/${device} |hexdump -C

I have also tried with
stty -F /dev/${device} 115200 cs8 -cstopb -parenb -brkint -icrnl -imaxbel
-opost
tail -c +1 -f /dev/ttyO4 | hexdump -C

but it makes no difference to the output.

I have tested the slave with a PC and RS485-to-USB cable, and it works
perfectly at 115200 / 8n1.

I have tested the cape on a BeagleBoneBlack (disabling HDMI and eMMC
virtual capes) and I get the same problem.

I have even seen the same symptoms when testing the slave + a completely
different cape (which also has an on-board RS-485 controller and its own
overlay, which is loaded OK).

I have tested using different power supplies for slave and BB (joint and
separate supply).

I tested using a clean install of Debian.

I have tested with other UARTs (ttyO2, ttyO5) - same result.

Things I have NOT yet done:
1) tested with Angstrom Linux (standard with BB and BBB)
2) terminated the RS-485 line endpoints with resistors (the line is 15-30
cm ... should not be necessary).
3) tested at lower baud rate

Basically I am out of feasible ideas ...

Can anyone suggest anything else I can investigate or check?

Re: [beagleboard] Cranky BBB

2013-12-20 Thread rattus
Sadly, I don't have the appropriate cable.

I've tried telnet, ssh, and Cloud9 console via both USB or Ethernet, no go.
I get the startup Web page and Cloud9 just fine. This is one of the latest
batch (like last week?): BeagleBone Black rev 00A6 S/N 4713BBBK2106

Is perhaps my only option to burn an SD card, but then again, would that
image be any different than that which is loaded into the EMMC? BTW, I'm on
either a Mac or Linux host.

There's got to be a way in!

Re: [beagleboard] Re: BeagleBone Black doesn't sometimes start. Only Power LED is on

2013-12-20 Thread Gerald Coley
Get one of the latest version and try it. There was a change made back on
Rev A6 that tied the 3V3B power up to the 3V3A. The 3V3B rail was coming up
before the 3V3A rail. That may help this issue.

[beagleboard] SD card boot and SD/MMC file system driver.

2013-12-20 Thread lagrecjo
I am using IAR EWARM development environment and the Segger embOS Operating
System on the BeagleBone board.

I have no problem compiling and running applications on the board's IRAM
and DDR RAM via the JTAG.

I now need to have the board start my application from the SD card and
additionally use the SD card for file storage via a mountable file system
in my application.

1) Are there any clear procedures and tools for boot loading a non-linux
application from the SD card?
2) Are there any drivers available for the MMC interface to allow mounting
a file system from the SD card in an application?

All suggestions appreciated.

Re: [beagleboard] Dual Display Capes

Looking at this I see no way to hook one board into two different displays.
There is one connector for the board on each panel. The board only has one
set of connectors.

Why do you need two displays that have the same information displayed on
both of them?

In general, as long as both displays are the same resolutions, timing, and
size you can do that. There is only one LCD interface on the processor.

As to the capes, they have no top side connectors, because putting anything
into top side connectors would cover up the display. Display capes are
designed to be the last cape on the stack so they can be visible.

[beagleboard] Re: Software selection for Beaglebone black

2013-12-20 Thread pariyanshah
I will describe my queries i missed out -

1. How do i choose which platform to work on? I intend to use OpenCV for
real time image processing. I have never used anything other than Windows
platform. So guide me accordingly.

2. I have gone through several tutorials, projects on the internet. What I
see is the BBB is connected via ethernet/USB to a computer.(I am not
talking about the power supply, an adapter will work too). In some projects
there is BBB working as the only processing device, no computer is
connected. I want the same for my project. Is there any tutorial describing
a way how to go about making a project independent of computer? Or I am
lacking some basic knowledge on this issue?

3. I find tutorials on based specifically on Beagleboard, Beagleboard xM or
Beaglebone. What are general changes/precautions I should take before
implementing for Beaglebone Black? Or should I stick to only those
tutorials that have information solely for BBB?

Thankyou in advance

Is the device powered by USB or the 5volt barrel connector? (what rating)

If that fixes it, then your USB modem is crap, taking way too much current on
startup..

If I put a USB hub between the same, but if I put another device into the hub
everything is OK and I manage to work with the modem

Re: [beagleboard] Re: Java on BBB

2013-12-20 Thread Mike Bremford
That's a Java ME class, and I expect you're running Java SE aren't you?
There's no reason that I'm aware of to run the micro-edition on hardware
like the BBB, it's easily got enough grunt to run the full JVM.

I'm accessing GPIO, I2C, SPI from J2SE using JNA (
https://github.com/twall/jna) which is working very well - it's a wrapper
around libc, much easier to work with than JNI, and because it's just libc
wrapped in Java you can do anything you can do in C - in particular, you
can poll() on filehandles, which means you can use the GPIOs through the
/sys/class/gpio interface.

To preempt the next question, I've extracted a bit of code and put it as a
shar archive at http://pastebin.com/af3CRU5r. Download the raw content to a
shell script and run it, it will give you 5 Java source files. Compile them
with the "jna.jar" file from ther JNA project mentioned above. This is an
extract from a project I'm working on so in order to use it you'd need to
fill in a couple of blanks, namely the events that are being fired when the
GPIO changes value: search for "pubGPIO" to see where that happens. I'm
also using the GPIO overlays from https://github.com/nomel/beaglebone to
set pull-ups/pulldowns, although this isn't essential to the classes. The
I2C stuff is there for good measure but is also independent. And if you
want to do things completely differently, the POSIX.java file is my way
into libc via JNA, and doesn't depend on anything else.

Re: [beagleboard] BBB does not recognise USB connected Arduino2009 if this is self powered

2013-12-20 Thread MV
Hi!

It is a noise from a socket type power adaptor.
What really matter is that BBB does not more recognise USB, even if reboot.

I tryied many USB-RS232 adapters (without external powering USB slaves).
The connection is unstable.
dmesg show ftdi related problems (unable to change speed or other iocntl).

BBB is powered with only 1A adaptor.
I'll try a better one.

Linux arm 3.8.13-bone32 #1 SMP Fri Dec 13 20:05:25 UTC 2013 armv7l armv7l
armv7l GNU/Linux
root@arm:~# cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq
30

I know that powering from USB the board will slow down to 30 MHz but
the board is powered from +5 V with a 5Amps power supply

I even boot only from power supply and attach the usb cable after boot
sequence (monitoring LED)
Any idea how to switch to high freq ? I also have problems with the USB
host - I presume that it is also related to wrong detection of primary
power supply
