This was done for "awhile" to support old factory programmed eMMC's.
Now days we don't enable the:

/uEnv.txt -> /boot/uEnv.txt

jump anymore.. Specially with U-Boot overlays

http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#U-Boot_Overlays

where we "need" the latest version of u-boot at all times..

> Is this searching a generic thing in U-Boot or specific to Beaglebone?

the generic version is called "distro_default" in u-boot

We use mainline, Yocto uses mainline.. We are shipping u-boot
v2017.07-rc3 (released this last week), our patchset has been in
development since v2013. Generic parts are upstream, some parts have
generic interfaces upstream, but we just keep our version for
backwards compatibly.

that elinux page you found..

It started simple: 'defend' the rootfs/image from new users.

When you have MLO/u-boot.img in a fat partition the end user has easy
access too.. they tend do "delete" things they do not understand.
Then they call the seller asking "why" it no longer boots. Moving
from Fat to raw mode, has made the image much more reliable to end
user probing..

[beagleboard] Re: Beaglebone SSH connection failing

2017-07-07 Thread Graham
My guess is that it has something to do with Windows and the USB
widget/gadget thing.
Instead, try connecting to the BBB using Ethernet.
I run multiple BBBs as headless servers, using that same image, and access
them for programming and maintenance via SSH over Ethernet.
Use either Putty, or RSE inside of Eclipse.
It is rock solid.

[beagleboard] Yocto U-Boot and uEnv.txt Searching

2017-07-07 Thread Kenny Koller

I recently began learning Yocto/Poky and built Beaglebone Black artifacts
using the pyro branch. I configured things such that uEnv.txt, u-boot.img,
MLO, and zImage are on a bootable FAT32 partition. eMMC was erased. It
boots fine.

I also did some reading of the AM335x reference manual where I learned that
the primary program loader (PPL in ROM) can identify FAT12/16/32 partitions
and load MLO from there but a raw mode also exists where no filesystem is
needed at all for MLO and U-Boot.

I found this write-up
 regarding a
BBB partition scheme 2.0. It looks to me as if the PPL for OMAP3 on
supported the FAT technique and that OMAP4 because supporting the raw mode.

Regarding uEnv.txt: I am seeing these files in several places:

Are these cumulative in the sense that each one found overrides / adds
information or does it stop with the first hit?

Is this searching a generic thing in U-Boot or specific to Beaglebone?

If there are differences in searching for this file what is the history of
U-Boot for Beaglebone? Does the Yocto version use code that evolved from
AM335x support from TI? Or was that adopted from this community when Yocto
began using the hardware as a reference?

Is there a document that explains the use of the various uEnv.txt as used
by the partition scheme 2.0?

Regarding FAT v. raw mode: Since the PPL for the AM335 supports both why
change to the 2.0 strategy? What is the advantage?

Thanks.

Re: [beagleboard] Re: BBB how to manage the limited eMMC flash size of 4GB

2017-07-07 Thread Graham Haddock
If you start with a "microSD/standalone" image, then you are ready to boot
and run from the card.

If you start with a "flasher" image, then you will need to edit the
/boot/uEnv.txt file to keep it from flashing your eMMC.

The other thing to know is that you may need to expand the partitions on
the card, so as to be able to access the entire memory space of the card.

If you run df -h and can only see about 4 GB of memory space, follow
the instructions at

http://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#Expanding_File_System_Partition_On_A_microSD

On the next reboot, you should see the entire card as available memory.

[beagleboard] Beaglebone SSH connection failing

2017-07-07 Thread alexjudd79
Hi,
This morning I dug out my BB rev C and uploaded the latest image (Debian 8.7
 2017-03-19 4GB SD LXQT
)
 from http://beagleboard.org/latest-images.
The flash and update suceeded and I was able to login via SSH using the
default debian/temppwd after connecting it to my Win7 host computer via
USB. Able to connect to 192.168.7.2 via Putty with debian/temppwd

Then the trouble starts. At an interval ranging from 5 to maybe 240 seconds
I get a popup saying "software caused connection abort"

I tried the same thing from within a VM running Jessie. SSH in and after a
little while I get "Write failed: Broken Pipe"

I tried running putty as administrator and setting keepalive to 5 seconds
but no change.

I thought it might be the power over USB but I tried it with a 5v adapter
plugged in and I am still seeing the same issue.

Checked SSH by logging into a remote machine from the host and it has no
issues.

Has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before? I'm also seeing connectivity
issues from http://192.168.7.2 The notification box that goes green when my
BBB is connected disappears with about the same frequency. Same when using
the cloud9. The device remains available for browsing within file explorer.

Many thanks

[beagleboard] Re: BBB how to manage the limited eMMC flash size of 4GB

2017-07-07 Thread henning . e . larsen
Thanks for the hint.
*> "set the SD card as boot media"*:
I did not have to do anything apart from flashing the SD with the relevant
image, insert in the slot and power on. Then it automatically boots on the
flash. *Right*? or at least that's what i saw.

For supplement information: The SD card will be mounted as /dev/mmcblk*0*p1
 and if you boot from eMMC (or mount it) the eMMC will be mounted as
/dev/mmcblk*1*p1.
The command df will show which of those is mounted. This may come handy if
experimenting with different boot sources.

Re: [beagleboard] RE: Um...My Temp in F Degrees is the Same as the C Degrees/Dang!

2017-07-07 Thread Mala Dies
Hello Rob,

Seth here, again. I tried out the *(reading.value / 4096.0) * 1800;* in the
software. It tells me that I have a temperature of -49.99 degrees in
Celsius. I am trying to make believe my calculations from the software are
correct with the inside/climate controlled temp. in this house.

...

49 degrees in Celsius is 120.xx in Fahrenheit. This seems extreme. It is
extreme. I have my temp on 80 degrees in Fahrenheit. I was expecting a
degree in Celsius of 26 or 27 from my reads. If you have any ideas, please
let me know. I am pretty sure you are very busy and do not have complete
time to dedicate to me. I understand completely.

Seth

P.S. Oh and I cut out the temp. transfer from Celsius to Fahrenheit in the
software. This is how the 49.xx came to be. I tried more than one TMP36
sensor. I will keep trying for this project I plan on keeping in time.
Oh...is there a type of ADC we are using that can be researched? Can I find
this ADC name and brand in the SRM?

Re: [beagleboard] spi / shiftout.js in 2017-03-19 image

2017-07-07 Thread William Hermans
SO just glancing at the code here:
https://github.com/derekmolloy/exploringBB/blob/master/chp08/spi/spi595Example/spi595.c

I notice in fact he does have the path hard coded for the device: #define
SPI_PATH "/dev/spidev1.0"

So, after checking to make sure the spidev kernel module has loaded through
your overlay files, and in fact it's configured correctly for this kernel.
I'd double check the above path is actually still pointing to the correct
hardware SPI module you're trying to use.

Re: [beagleboard] spi / shiftout.js in 2017-03-19 image

2017-07-07 Thread William Hermans
SO Derrek's book is based on kernel 3.8.x where as you're now using a 4.x
kernel. Chances are very likely you'll need to chance a few things in
relation to SPI. NO hands on with SPI on the beaglebone yet personally. But
first, you're going need to make sure your overlay file is correct for this
kernel. Also, file pathing for hardware has changed too. So unless you've
adjusted the code to work with this kernel, it likely will not work.

Can you show us the output of the lsmod command? First it would be good to
make sure the SPIdev driver is actually loaded.

[beagleboard] spi / shiftout.js in 2017-03-19 image

2017-07-07 Thread Jeff Albrecht
Perhaps a year or more ago I finished Part I and II of Derek Molloy's
excellent book; "Exploring Beaglebone" At the time I specifically recall
successfully running the shiftout.js in the cloud9 ide and the spi595.c
from the book. Flash forward to now I'm returning to finish part III
specifically PRUs but thought it prudent to review a bit.

I flash my BBB with bone-debian-8.7-iot-armhf-2017-03-19-4gb.img.xz

jeffa@beaglebone:~$ cat /etc/dogtag
BeagleBoard.org Debian Image 2017-03-19
jeffa@beaglebone:~$ uname -a
Linux beaglebone 4.4.54-ti-r93 #1 SMP Fri Mar 17 13:08:22 UTC 2017 armv7l
GNU/Linux
jeffa@beaglebone:~$

While working with the spi595.c I check the slots. I'm not positive but it
looks like the way to configure pins now is with c*ape-universaln*. I also
find a handy gist
 from Drew
@pdp7 where I learn about *config-pin. *I also try loading the BB-SPIDEV0
and the ADAFRUIT-SPI0 in /etc/default/capemgr and rebooting.

jeffa@beaglebone:~$ cat /sys/devices/platform/bone_capemgr/slots
 0: PF  -1
 1: PF  -1
 2: PF  -1
 3: PF  -1
 4: P-O-L-   0 Override Board Name,00A0,Override Manuf,cape-universaln
jeffa@beaglebone:~$

Not getting the blinkin' lighting with the spi595.c test code from the
book, I try the simpler shiftout.js bit banging (not spi) example from the
BBB documentation  and
cloud9 ide. Nope. I write a quick bonescript .js to test my GPIOs by
toggling low/high. They're good. I hook up my oscilloscope to see that I'm
only getting the latch (on channel 3). Where is the clock and the serial
in?

Are there any other changes that I may have missed? Suggestions?

You can't mix and match u-boot/kernel overlays, in /boot/uEnv.txt

add:

uboot_overlay_addr4=/lib/firmware/libpruio-0A00.dtbo

[beagleboard] Re: Porting from BeagleBone Black (BBB) to BeagleBone Green Wireless (BBGW)

2017-07-07 Thread Daniel Kulp

I've had no issues with the PRU (using the latest jessie IoT image) on the
BBGW. The biggest issue I had was that the wireless stuff on the BBGW is
wired very differently than the BBBW and it consumes a bunch (13) of GPIO
pins. I had to completely redesign a cape I had to work on the the BBGW
to avoid all the pins it sucks up. Pins not available: P8_11, P8_12,
P8_14-P8_18, P8_26, P9_12, P9_28-31. I definitely prefer the BBBW for
this reason.The wireless stuff on there doesn't consume any of the
gpios.

Basically, check your board. You list SPI as something you need. SPI1 is
on P9_28-31 and thus wouldn't work. (you MIGHT be able to get it to work
with a custom overlay. Those pins I *think* are just used for bluetooth
audio so a custom overlay for BBGW that disables that might work, no idea)

[beagleboard] GPIO configuartion in Device Tree Overlay and how to set a default value for an output pin

2017-07-07 Thread Beagle Boner

Hi,

I´m currently getting more and more into the Device Tree and I have a basic
overview how it works and how DTOs are written. I wrote an overlay to
enable a GPIO as output. The Pinmux fragment works but I am not sure what
is the "bone-pinmux-helper" (here in fragment@1) for. Some overlays I
reviewed have this fragment and some not. So I´m not sure what it is doing
and if I need this.

I created an little overlay here with this device tree overlay generator (
http://www.kilobaser.com/blog/2014-07-28-beaglebone-black-devicetreeoverlay-generator)

and commented my thoughts and question in blue.

/dts-v1/;
/plugin/;

/{
compatible = "ti,beaglebone", "ti,beaglebone-black";
part_number = "BS_PINMODE_P8_26_0xf";

exclusive-use =
"P8.26",
"gpio1_29";

fragment@0 {
target = <&am33xx_pinmux>;
__overlay__ {
bs_pinmode_P8_26_0xf: pinmux_bs_pinmode_P8_26_0xf {
pinctrl-single,pins = <0x07c 0xf>;
};
};
};

fragment@1 {
target = <&ocp>;   //targets the
on-chip-peripherials (ocp) node in the Device Tree
__overlay__ {
bs_pinmode_P8_26_0xf_pinmux {  //creates a subnode
with the name "bs_pinmode_P8_26_0xf_pinmux"
 compatible = "bone-pinmux-helper"; //what is the "bone-pinmux-helper"
and where can i find more documentation on that?
status = "okay"; //what is actiaved
here?
pinctrl-names = "default";
pinctrl-0 = <&bs_pinmode_P8_26_0xf>;   //refering to
pincontroll settings from bs_pinmode_P8_26_0xf in fragment@0
};
};
};
};

I want to drive an Enable Input of a display with that GPIO (don´t confuse
with DE-Mode) which is active high. So my idea is that the display will be
enabled when the DTO will be loaded through the cape manager. Is there a
way to set 1 as a default value in the overlay for that output pin? (DTO is
loaded > value is instantly 1?)

Cheers
