No you are seeing a different issue.. The DMA/SPI/Overlays would cause
a "hardlock" when trying to switch from pio mode to DMA.

In your case, your just seeing an un-optimized dma..

Any change with v4.14.x?

Re: [beagleboard] BBB: Using DMA with SPI

2018-05-15 Thread John B
Hi Robert,

I am currently using the uboot_overlay_addrX scheme, and it seems the
driver is always using PIO even for large SPI transfers (between 1024 and
3072 bytes). Under 3.8.13 I was using the Kernel overlay mechanism with
success (DMA worked), but this past week I just switched to the more recent
stuff that no longer supports the cape manager "slots" file, meaning, all
overlays are in the uEnv.txt (or part of the main DTB). I'd rather not
monkey with the main DTB, however, if that's the only way to get SPI+DMA
then I guess I'll have to do that. Do I need a newer kernel and/or
u-boot? version.sh output attached.

Thanks
John

Very hard work IMHO, it's non-trivial to work out which packages to
remove and I'm pretty sure that there's a *lot* to remove too.

Yes this was fixed, by NOT using kernel overlays.. (race condition)

Use either a full DTB or u-boot Overlays..

[beagleboard] Re: Are console images not available from beagleboard.org?

2018-05-15 Thread Graham
Well, they are weekly testing releases.

And, some of those weekly testing releases are chosen to become formal
releases.

And if they had to chang anything in them, there would be a new/different
date/version on them.

So if you actually want the Console version corresponding to the formal
'release' version, there it is.

If you want Gerald to change something about how releases are posted, you
will have to take that up with Gerald directly.

I think he is deliberately restricting what he posts on the release page,
so he limits the damage a newbie can do to their BBB to just the plug-in
card, which is easily re-programmable.

As far as:
>>> "4) Use apt remove on the released LXQT image to remove the "excess"
packages in the LXQT image until it's package list matches the package list
of the console image?"
Yes, you can do it that way, but it sure sounds like the "hard way" to me.

[beagleboard] BBB: Using DMA with SPI

2018-05-15 Thread John B
I am wondering if any progress has been made in getting Device Tree
Overlays (via uBoot) to correctly allow DMA to be used on the SPI devices.
I have not seen any *recent* mention of this issue. Referring to these
previous articles:

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/beagleboard/spi$20dma%7Csort:date/beagleboard/YV5qDHTgtBQ/MAI1s-PUAQAJ

and

https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/beagleboard/spi$20dma%7Csort:date/beagleboard/_22bW7vMkW0/rn01nfvyBQAJ

It is suggested that should you want to use DMA with SPI, enable the SPI in
the main DTB (*sigh*). Is this still the case? If so, does it even make
sense to use DT Overlays for any other resources I am using (GPIO's for
example)? Since I'm hacking up the main DTB anyway, why not just add
everything I need there and not worry about the uBoot DT Overlays at all?

Thanks so much for any insight anyone may have into this.

Regards,
John

Hi Gerald,

thanks for the feedback. Where can one download the Altium version? I only
found the one with the Gerber-files...

Cheers

You should be able to get that also out of the Altium version as well.

Hi,

I wonder if the complete hardware data for the BBB are available somewhere: I
found some Gerber files defining the PCB, a BOM defining the used components
but I did not found a CPL that describes which component has to be placed at
which position.

So...aren't these data open and available for free?

Thanks!

Mike
