Who was Abu Darda'? Why has he been so well-known and widely regarded amongst
the Great Sufis? To answer that, herewith, we forward another posting from the
author of 'Catatan Harian Membuka Hati', Wiyoso Hadi alias 'Mas' (means
'Brother' in Javanese Language) YOS.

Kathir ibn Qays said: I was sitting with AbudDarda' in the mosque of
Damascus. A man came to him and said: “AbudDarda', I have come to you from the
town of the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) for a tradition that I have
heard you relate from the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him). I have come for
no other purpose. “

He said: “I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: If anyone
travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one
of the roads of Paradise. The angels will lower their wings in their great
pleasure with one who seeks knowledge, the inhabitants of the heavens and the
Earth and the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned man.
The superiority of the learned man over the devout is like that of the moon, on
the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the
heirs of the Prophets, and the Prophets leave neither dinar nor dirham, leaving
only knowledge, and he who takes it takes an abundant portion. “
[Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 25, Number 3634]

I went to Sham and offered a two-Rak'at prayer and then said, "O Allah! Bless
me with a good pious companion." So I went to some people and sat with them. An
old man came and sat by my side. I asked, "Who is he?" They replied, "(He is)
Abu Ad-Darda", I said (to him), "I prayed to Allah to bless me with a pious
companion and He sent you to me." He asked me, "From where are you?" I replied,
"From the people of Al-Kufa." He said, "Isn't there amongst you Ibn Um 'Abd,
the one who used to carry the shoes, the cushion (or pillow) and the water for
ablution? Is there amongst you the one whom Allah gave Refuge from Satan
through the request of His Prophet. Is there amongst you the one who keeps the
secrets of the Prophet which nobody knows except him?" Abu Darda' further
asked, "How does 'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) recite the Sura starting with, 'By the
Night as it conceals (the light)." (92.1) Then I recited before him: 'By the
Night as it envelops: And by the Day as it appears in
brightness; And by male and female.' (91.1-3) On this Abu Darda' said, "By
Allah, the Prophet made me recite the Sura in this way while I was listening to
him (reciting it)."
[Narrated by Alqama in Sahih Bukhari: Volume 5, Book 57, Number 85]

“None of you can be pious unless he is knowledgeable, and he cannot enjoy
knowledge unless he applies it practically.”
  [Abu Ad-Darda' ra]

“To admonish your brother is better than to lose him. Give your brother
advice and be tender with him, but do not agree with his covetousness lest you
should be like him.”
  [Abu Ad-Darda' ra]

Abu Ad-Darda' was a trader in Madinah. He was declared the brother of the
Sufi-Wise Persian Companion Salman al-Farisi and served as a judge in Syiria
(Sham) during the caliph Uthmaan's reign.

"The Prophet (peace be upon him) made a bond of brotherhood between Salman
(ra) and Abu Ad-Darda' (ra). Salman paid a visit to AbudDarda' and found Umm
Ad-Darda' [meaning his wife] dressed in shabby clothes and asked her why she
was in that state. She replied, "Your brother Abu Darda' is not interested in
(the luxuries of) this world." In the meantime Abu Darda' came and prepared a
meal for Salman. Salman requested Abu Darda' to eat (with him), but Abu Darda'
said, "I am fasting." Salman said, "I am not going to eat unless you eat." So,
Abu Darda' ate (with Salman). When it was night and (a part of the night
passed), Abu Darda' got up (to offer the night prayer), but Salman told him to
sleep and Abu Darda' slept. After sometime Abu Darda' again got up but Salman
told him to sleep. When it was the last hours of the night, Salman told him to
get up then, and both of them offered the prayer. Salman told Abu Darda', "Your
Lord has a right on you, your soul has a right on you,
and your family has a right on you; so you should give the rights of all those
who has a right on you." Abu Darda' came to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and
told the story. Muhammad said, "Salman has spoken the truth."
