Regular Expressions : Help in understanding

2005-07-17 Thread atul ashpalia
Hi,

Can anyone help me in understanding the Example 5 in
the link below w.r.t (First Match) and (All Matches)
words.

I want to understand the meaning of these two words
w.r.t the above words. And if you could provide me
with some examples and explanation of those scripts
w.r.t the above two words.

I am a bit confused in understanding regular
expressions w.r.t the First Match and All Matches.

Thanks in Advance,
Regards,
Atul Ashpalia

What link? You never posted a URL.

If the example is short (a page/screen or so), can you just paste it in
an email to the list, along with the URL?

This isn't homework, is it?

not sure about the rest of its name but at least it got the "b0y"

Programmers have been likened to modern day Sorcerers. Well, I'm the Mickey
Mouse apprentice who spawned an infinite number of zombie broom processes, and
got in big trouble when the Sorcerer came back.

Perhaps the GMail abuse people will rid their system of his presence. Of
course when your address is Joe Wilson, your not likely to actually be
able to hide behind some other handle very well.

p.s. spamming individual subscribers who have no admin access will not
get you very far, its not like I can unsubscribe you.

Hi,

Actually i have pasted the link as well but seems the
mailing list does not allow to the same.

I am pasting the link in parts. Kindly join it and see
the link. Lets see if that works.

www.zvon.org /other
/PerlTutorial
/Output/
example5.html

I have written the above link in parts. Kindly
consider and make it a one link and check the link for
example 5.

Thanks in Advance,

Case 1

Regular Expression:  .
First match: Regular expressions are powerful!!!
All matches: Regular expressions are powerful!!!

A dot "." matches "any" character, hence first match is the first character in
the string, and all matches shows that each of the characters matched,

Case 2

Regular Expression:  ..
First match: Regular expressions are powerful!!!
All matches: Regular expressions are powerful!!!

Six "." s in the pattern mean that match any 6 characters, hence "Regula" is
the first match, keeps on matching each 6 characters in the string, ends when
there are only 5 characters ( "ul!!!" ) left.

Try runngint hsi code to get clear idea:

#!/usr/local/bin/perl
$str= "Regular expressions are powerful!!!";

while ($str =~ /../g) {
print "Word is  - $&, ends at position ", pos $str, "\n";
}
