sword swallowing
Back when I was in vet school, we had this remarkable radiograph that they'd show to students just to illustrate that a dog truly will eat anything -- the x-ray revealed the 10" long knife blade from an electric carving knife running down through the esophagus, across the whole width of the stomach and protruding out into the small intestines!! Surgery to remove the knife was successful and the dog made an uneventful recovery. remarkable sue(Aeryn with Devyn & Rowyn -- hoping none of them get any bright ideas!)
Be suspicious of newspaper ads selling dogs
A truly sad news report on Boston Channel 7 at 11PM. Was called "Puppy Profiteers" I had to take notes very quickly but, They said that ALOT of the Want Ads are deceiving Their investigative people went to visit some of the folks who posted the ads Deception, shocking conditions In a NH home? dozens of dogs in filthy dark cages were shown; they said that it looked like a factory Showed a barn? in Attleboro, MA where there were filthy, underfed and diseased dogs Said that local kennel licensing is often? ignored and no state inspection The MSPCA says that the consumer does not know what is behind the ads Ads mislead A lady who bought a dog that she thought she was going to a private home to purchase later learned that the dog was in a pet store and shipped from the Midwest Said that pet stores can sell their animals as long as they pass yearly inspection I have always been against the advertisement of Bernese in the newspaper and this reinforces my belief. I know that others feel that it is fine to place advertisements in papers and I respect this. To those of you who have already contacted me about older computers, thank you! BUT!! I absolutely cannot take this one on. If we are going to find uses for old computers, it will take someone with a bit of time to organize it, a bit of knowledge of computers and software to know what will work with what, and a whole lot of common sense. Re: FW: Sick Berner, Jake
Hi Laura, How terribly sad that Jake crossed the Bridge at such a young age. It's never long enough when we are talking about our beloved Berners. He was so very lucky to have lived his live surrounded with love and care. He knew that he was loved and I'm sure he returned that love. The ache in your heart will someday be replaced with the many happy memories that you have of time spent together. May he always be a part of you. Hugs, Joye Neff

Glucosamine
My boy Ozzie is now just over 13 months old, his height is 29 inches and he weighs 115 pounds (very lean boy). He has matured into a wonderful dog. I am happy to say we have had very few problems with him. At around 4-1/2 months I started noticing that he would on occasion have a little difficulty getting up from a lying down position (hind legs). He still has the same difficulty but not all the time. After he is out running in the yard and/or playing with other dogs I find that when he comes in he is very stiff and on occasion starts to limp. This will last a day or so and then the limp and stiffness seems to go away. I am wondering if this is a sign that there could be a problem with his hips or arthritis? My husband suggested we give him a supplement of glucosamine which works for humans with arthritis. Has anybody every tried this and if so what dosage? This group has been extremely helpful in the past and I am sure you will be again. Andrea, I have word from another Berner-L friend that Doggon Wheels is willing to take donations (credit card) for Hugo's chair, I'm not sure if it is a refurbished as you talk about or completely new -- once they have 75% of cost of chair in donations they will begin work on his chair. FW: Sick Berner, Jake
Forwarded in plain text for Laura: It is with great sadness that I tell everyone that I helped my beloved Jake cross the Rainbow bridge on Thursday.I had hoped that his liver cancer would not advance so quickly, but that was not to be.Jake had not eaten for several days and when I took him for a car ride Thursday morning he would not get out. I sat in the back seat with him and he just kept staring at me and I knew he was telling me he was ready. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. He was only 31/2 years old, but he lived every monent with such joy and brought great happiness to our lives.Thank you all for being such caring people.Give all your Berners many hugs and pets from Jake and me. Re: Berner in Shelter
Andrea If it were one of our pups and it ended up in a shelter we as its breeder would be notified as our puppies are micro chipped when they leave with the new owners. The chip is in our name so we can find out just how one of our puppies ended up in a shelter and we could deal with it. Be it owner neglect or the fact that pup just got out of the yard and run off. Of course this would only take place if the shelter checked to see if the dog was micro chipped. Computers
If anyone is upgrading and has an older computer that could be shipped to someone that has a need for one, maybe someone would be willing to volunteer as a clearing house for things like this? People with a need for a computer: those that do rescue but can't afford one; those that are in the midst of medical problems with themselves or their dogs and need some support; etc. Anyone recently do an upgrade and wondering what to do with their older one that is still perfectly workable? Instead of using it to collect dust in the garage, I'm sure others would cheerfully contribute to the shipping costs... My husband and I upgrade about every four years or so, and I've helped to place 2 computers with Berner people that need them. Hugo is going swimming!
The surgeon gave his ok so we're off to San Diego tomorrow to try the hydro-therapy. I am very excited but not looking for immediate miracles (one friend said, "I hope he just walks out of that pool!" ). Just moving one paw a little would be a big deal to me but even if he just learns to relax in the water tomorrow, that would be our first step. She says most dogs get over their fear after the first lesson. I am very encouraged today because after I propped up Hugo this morning, he relaxed down, put his head on the grass and stayed like this for 15 min. He even moved his head around in different positions. It was so good to see him in a position other than lying down on his side, he looked so much more like himself and seemed much happier. I am getting such wonderful encouragement from the emails, I thank you and Hugo thanks you for all your good thoughts. He'll report back tomorrow night. Donna and Hugo, Southern Calif.

Re: masticatory myositis (longish)
Hi Ann, My eldest bitch was struck with this problem at the age of 9 months. One side of her face swelled so bad she looked like an English Bull terrier because her stop completely disappeared under swelling. Aimee ended up hardly able to open her mouth and this was in just a few days. Everyone said it was a bee sting but I knew that it wasn't, so took her to the vet. The vet immediately diagnosed mastic myositis and said it was unusual in such a breed as it tended to affect bull breeds. Aimee was immediately put on a course of steroids (Prednisone) to take away the swelling, the vet said if she had been left untreated that eventually she would not have been able to open her mouth at all and she could have died. One complication can be that fibrous tissue forms which can prevent the mouth opening properly. I think this may have happened to a small degree with Aimee because she does seem to have to stretch her mouth several times before she can fully open it when yawning. That seems to be the only problem she has had and she is now 5 1/2 years old. Anyway thats my experience, if you want to know anything else, just mail me privately. My vet is not recommending any treatment at this time, and the atrophy does not seem to be bothering Kerzon at all. I obviously want to learn everything I can about this disease, and also make sure that I'm following the best course of care for this special boy. Thanks! > Ann Skinner > Tatters and Kerzon >
shots
Hi, I have a general question that hopefully someone can answer. What is the reasoning behind separating the Parvo and Distemper shot for a Berner. Usually this shot is given in one dose, however, we have been advised that it is best to separate these shots. We have done this since birth, but just never really knew why. Any information? RE: Fussy eaters?
Hi Melissa, Great to hear your dogs are as keen about their food as mine are:-) I would have to contradict you about mixing cottage cheese in for giving extra calcium. Studies have shown that large breed puppies benefit from having their consumption of calcium limited more so than other breeds. Extra calcium is detrimental to correct bone and joint development and it is the minerals and vitamins that are balanced specifically in the large breed puppy formulas. Rose T. -Original Message- From: Melissa Chan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: February 9, 2003 6:15 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Fussy eaters? I don't know about the rest of you, but this whole fussy eater thing boggles my mind. Griffin and Loki get a mix of Iams kibble in the morning with cottage cheese and at dinner, they get cooked ground beef and oatmeal mixed with a pureed slurry of vegies and fruit. I can see no difference in there ravenous attitudes towards either dish set before them! I just thought Bernese were always hungry and would eat anything! Guess I was wrong. It's so interesting to hear about the different habits of other dogs of the same breed. Good luck with your fussy eater. If I were you, I would try to get her to eat the dry kibble with a heaping spoonfull of cottage cheese mixed in. I think it might make the "medicine go down" a little more enjoyably and it's gives them a little extra calcium! I'm no expert, but I think it keeps their skin from getting too dry. The auction news is both good and bad. Many of the dogs were scratched from the auction prior to it starting, and many of Bub Gage's dogs were pulled mid auction. Our best guess as to the reason is the low bids that the dogs were bringing. These bids were nowhere near the bid prices that he got last year and the year before. Of the 15 dogs he had scheduled to be auctioned, I believe only 5 were actually placed for auction. The BARC board decided that BARC would not be the outlet for Bub's dogs. In the past, these dogs have had numerous health problems, particularly orthopedic ones, and always severe. Many of you may not be aware that Bub is the source for many of the pups that have shown up in the pet stores. He can't sell his dogs here in KS or MO and is having no luck CO. which was another one of his big markets. So BARC's board requested that those rescuers going to the auction on behalf of BARC NOT bid on the Gage dogs unless they were going at ridiculously low amounts. Well, we did come home with 1 Gage dog. A male that sold for 450.00. Take note that this is a far cry from the $2500-8100 we paid a year and two years ago. :-) As most of you are aware, BARC has placed a "cap" on our bids at the last several auctions to insure that WE are not the reason for the high prices or increase in numbers of berners sold at auction. At the last two auctions, we noted that the prices for Berners have begun to fall and continue to do so. The number of dogs to be sold in this auction was comparatively high. There were many more Cavaliers, Pomeranian and Yorkie's than Bernese, and to my knowledge, their breed clubs have not been at the auctions bidding on their breeds. We went to the auctions with limits on what we would spend per dog and how many we could handle in terms of fostering, veterinary care and transportation. In the end, BARC came home with 13 dogs. In total,I believe there were approximately 30 Berners sold. I don't have the catalog here to give you the exact numbers, but I can tell you that the auctioneers were expecting BARC to take the final bids, they came to BARC with dogs that people had retracted their bid on, and when they had a dog with a high reserve that no one else would pay, again they came looking for BARC. In all of these scenarios, BARC did not buy at the inflated prices they were asking for, leaving them with no money in their pockets for all the trouble of offering this large number of Berners. There were groups of Amish/Mennonites there with their trailers ready to buy. I am sure that Bob Hughes knew putting SO many berners and rare breeds up for sale at once would draw the Amish/Mennonites from PA and he was right. As much as I would have loved to spend every one's money and come home with ALL of those dogs, I truly believe that the statement we made was a loud one, and possibly one of the means to help us to an end. FYI; Berners were NOT the highest selling dogs at this auction.the Leo's have seemed to draw their interest now. There was a Leo that sold for 5000.00 Cavaliers are still in high demand and will probably stay there for a while since they are so much easier to house and sell. The highest selling berner at this auction was $2750.00. This was for a 4 year old female that I suspect they had problems breeding. Many of these dogs were there because the breeders/importers could not sell the dogs. Others I think have learned that raising and selling this breed is NOT going to be as easy as most breeds because the true berner lovers are SO much more aggressive about education and protecting their breed. So it is a double-edged sword...we are glad they are having a tough time breeding and selling the dogs, but we hate to see them show up at auction. I
RE: Food for thought--playing iwth a lab
Certainly there are rules of thumb that can be prudently followed in caring for our pets. While one may not outright restrict "playing with a lab", according to the orthopedic surgeon who performed CCL surgery on one of my dogs, frizbies bring him more business than any other single triggering event. When a dog jumps for a flying frizbie, as he lands there is a sufficient amount of torque to cause damage. It may not be playing with the lab that is the problem, but rather the type of play and the prior conditioning of the dog doing the playing. Nancy Melone, Treasurer Berner-Garde Foundation, Inc. RE: He's afraid of his crate
Hi Cindy, My advice would be to leave it for now, you're right he has a lot of bad memories about crates and confinement and the more you struggle with this issue the worse it's going to get. Find a place where you can place the crate with the door open, leave a nice comfy bed in it and a couple of toys and something like a nylabone. Act like the crate doesn't exist and if you have to confine him use a babygate and put him in a comfortable room. He may not like the pan in the bottom of the crate or the noise of it when he steps on it. I once shipped a nine month old bitch in from overseas and she had a traumatic journey and there was no way she was going in a crate again without a lot of force, which is not what I wanted to use. Surprisingly two years later I caught her napping in one that had the door open, it was her choice and as soon as she made that choice I would give her meaty bones to chew in there and start practicing closing the door for ever increasing amounts of time always opening it before she indicated she wanted out. For her she had the fright in a Vari Kennel but chose a wire crate to nap in, another two years and she was happy to go into a Vari-Kennel. You can try a VariKennel and take the top half off and just make a bed in the base for him, in a year's time you can try putting the top on without the door and see if he chooses to go to bed on his own choosing. As far as the groomer's concerned I would stay with him until she is finished and then bring him straight home. Preferably I would bath and groom him myself. The investment in a doggie hairdryer will save you hundreds of dollars over the years and your boy will be happier. If he has to be confined at the vets' most have runs and he likely will be happier in that or if he is put in one of their steel crates for recovery he is likely to be dopey anyway. Just warn the vet techs that he is traumatised by crates. I am glad that this BARC boy has a loving home after his horrible start in life. Rose T.
RE: Puppy ate a bully stick! or s**t happens
Hi Susan, Not so different for people too:-) My husband worked in New York for a year and oftentimes would cook a huge turkey and dine off it for nearly two weeks. He can eat green meat and slimey cold cuts and furry cheese, he can eat fast food burgers in the multiple numbers and dine in third world restaurants with never an upset stomach or a surge in his cholesterol. I on the otherhand am a more delicate flower:-)) Rose T.
RE: Trever lump!
Hi Julie, Oftentimes a Berner can get a sebaceous cyst that is about the size of a marble, the vet will open it and brown-cream coloured curds come out of it. The vet may choose to put the dog on antibiotics. If the vet is in any doubt about it he will needle biopsy it first and have that analysed. If the lump feels "rooted" he may recommend surgical excision and again have that analysed. Go carefully over him and see if you can find any more lumps and bumps for the vet to examine. One step at a time:-) Rose T.
Response to Michaela's post
Michaela, My post was to offer suggestions about overcoming fussiness, simulating what would happen in a pack environment is a good way to smarten up a puppy that is trying it on! I doubt the current response would be any different if offered other brands of kibble, it is the behaviour that has inadvertantly been taught that needs to be reversed. Cat kibble and canned food is very attractive to dogs because it is very flavour enhanced, usually very fishy smelling but is not balanced correctly for dogs and will not support their growth correctly. I take exception to certain aspects of your post, it sounds like you are taking an "us and them" side as far as the relationship between pet owner and breeder. On one hand you imply that we should have no say in anything yet I'm sure you would be one of the first to say "breeder's responsibility" if something were to go wrong with the puppy's development. I have no idea what contracts etc might be exchanged in the UK but here in Canada and the US breeders are expected to offer a guarantee so for that I think we do have a right to expect our puppy owners to follow a feeding regimen. Obviously if health aspects were involved then alternative feeding methods would have to be considered. I don't have a problem with my buyers wanting to try alternative feeding methods but I do want to know about it and if they were to choose BARF or Volhard I would like the reassurance that they are following the protocols correctly and if necessary refer them to someone knowledgeable. Best not to start a brand name war. Every breeder has their own regimen that over years of successfully raising Berners dictates their favoured brand. It is not fair to imply to a new owner that they are feeding poor quality when in fact they are feeding a premium brand that obviously has worked well for their breeder. Rose Tierney
RE: trying to get information
Hi, One time I rehomed a dog of my breeding, I gave the new owners all the information pertinant to the breeding of the dog but not details about the original owner nor did she know (as if she cared). I had the first owner sign the transfer papers and made a special request to the CKC because of being a rescue situation. The new owners were aware of all the circumstances but not the names and they were happy with that. A friend of mine is in Scotties and told me of a rescue Scottie that was reclaimed by the original owner when they had a change of heart. The new owner did not have the transfer papers and the police told her she would have to relinquish her Scottie to the person with the Registration. Always when dealing with rescue animals get the legal transfers done in case the original owner changes their mind. This is not uncommon in abusive situations. Rose T. RE: Elbow dysplasia surgery?
Hi Jess, I am assuming that Kelby is clinically unsound ie she is limping. You don't mention whether or not you have consulted with an orthopedic specialist but again I will presume you have done, if not then seek one out for their opinion and if necessary make sure you have a board certified orthopedic surgeon do the procedures required. There are various conditions within the elbow that are encompassed by the term elbow dysplasia. Ununited anconeal process, Fragmented Coronoid Process, Osteo Chondrosis Desicans (sp) and Disparate Growth between the Ulna and Radius. If there is a piece of floating cartlilage in the joint capsule this will be causing acute pain depending where it sits when the joint is flexed. Sometimes if very very small they eventually dissappear but meanwhile they are agravating the joint and whether or not small or large it will have to be removed. Elbows are very unforgiving joints and while surgery might offer some immediate relief there is a very strong probability of early onset DJD. Some young dogs have been helped with Cartrophen injections and you may want to discuss that with your vet. I would also recommend you have the shoulders and hips xrayed as well. If there is evidence of hip dysplasia you will need to discuss with the specialist the impact of recovery time of elbow surgery will have on the stability of the hips. OCD in the shoulder joint is often overlooked and may be the cause of the lameness rather than the elbow. Feeding supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphates can only be beneficial, they certainly won't do any harm. In time it may be necessary to use a pain management drug such as Rymadyl or Metacam. If Kelby is not lame then I would not recommend surgery, many a dog has lived a long and happy life with a degree of ED and/or HD but if she is having a lot of trouble getting around then surgery is an option. Don't block the Berner-l, email me if you want off
Dear Berner-l list members, We are having a few different people who have the Berner-l blocked. This causes us a lot of work and we get a ton of errors and often cannot even figure out who is the one who blocked us. So, if you want to get off the list, send me and email and I'll deleted you. No need to have the Berner-l blocked, because we do let you off if you want to. We are truly not this mean. Sylvia Katvala [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Jude, Here in the US, we have NO way of knowing the age at which a dog or bitch produces their first litter. Sires & dams are entered in the stud book only once, when their first litter is registered. Unfortunately, the stud book doesn't include their birthdate and the time lag between the litter's DOB and their publication in it varies so we can't be at all sure of the dog or bitch's age at the time of breeding. -Sherri Venditti

Yikes! Sounds like perhaps the breeder was caught out thinking Mr. Guy was not yet old enough or ready to breed. I would guess this was not a planned breeding, but perhaps it was. Dogs can be very determined about things like the mating imperative. I don't know about young dogs, but I know of a few cases where a colt bred his mother (or another broodmare out in the pasture with them) before being weaned; the youngest of those was about 6-7 months. Normally, horses don't get interested in that sort of thing until a few years old. Eileen Morgan The Mare's Nest http://www.enter.net/~edlehman --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Youngest Bernese Sire
Hi Guys, The latest issue of the UK Kennel Club Breed Records Supplement has published details of a Bernese litter sired by a male who was just 21 weeks old at the time of mating - 7 months old at the date his 20 month old "partner" whelped 9 puppies (she was the youngest Bernese dam listed in that issue too.) This has caused a great deal of comment amongst Bernese breeders and owners here - as you can imagine! Have any of you ever heard of such a young Bernese siring a litter? Jude Simonds. Coliburn UK

RE: Re.Photo wanted.
Willem, I know that you have some hard choices to make, I've been enjoying all the photos I've passed along to you, so many of them are just wonderful!! Good luck, and happy painting! Don't do too much, save those eyes!! And I just wanted to take this time to say thank you for all the paintings you've been doing for us as fundraisers, your work is just wonderful!! And your English is just fine - far better than any second language that I could attempt, so no apology necessary! Pat Long, a visiting Buddy, (& Luther) Berwyn PA

I just wanted to post a note about the photos that Joye and I do as fundraisers (and Joye and I will be doing them again this year at the California Specialty). You can use those photos any way that you would like. So if you see someone like Sheila Jones posting that she needs photos to use for painting items for fundraisers, please feel free to pass along any of the photos you think are suitable. Want to use them in the Alpenhorn? Please do! Want to use them for calendar fundraisers? Yes, do! I would only ask that if you sell them to someone to use for , that at least some of that money goes to one of your favorite Berner funds. And don't be surprised if one of the photos of your dogs gets used for something special, I'm winding up with quite a library of portrait photos, and people who want to say "thank you" for work that some of you have done for the breed have started asking me for photos of your dogs. I've been seeing some beautiful "thank you's" lately, and I was pleased to be able to help with the surprises! I'm an evil woman who enjoys helping to make people cry with pleasure.
