RE: Dog cars- need help

2003-07-18 Thread Jennifer Burgess
I have to say my favorite dog hauling vehicle is the Lexus RX300 (and i'm on
my second one -- the first one was totalled in a massive 5-car interstate
accident which I walked away from without a scratch or even a bruise).

This midsize SUV gets 19+ mpg (even in the city traffic) and 22 on the
highway, the back seats fold completely flat allowing tons of level room for
dog crates, dogs without crates, and it's relatively low to the ground (more
like a van) allowing for easier access by the dogs. I can also throw my
mountain bike in the back and it fits fine -- I have hauled 8 X11 foot rugs,
furniture, and more stuff than you can imagine would fit from the looks of
this vehicle on the outside...

The Lexus dealership always gives me a free loaner (always another RX300)
and they wash vacuum my car whenever I come in for service -- I've never
had to do anything other than routine maintenance -- oil changes, services
and replace tires and brake pads -- this car is totally trouble free -- and
with almost 80,000 miles. Roadside assistance is free and wonderful if you
ever need it (like for a flat tire) The air conditioner works great (and I'm
in Memphis where it will be 110 heat index today!) -- there's a back seat
A/C vent to keep the canines comfy..., the stereo system is superb and the
seats are so comfortable. It's more like a nice comfy car with the
advantages of an SUV. It also has a quick engine that will really
accelerate when you need the power.

Lexus has just changed the RX for this year -- it's a little wider w/ a
little more space inside the cargo area and it looks awesome. They are very
reasonably priced..compared to a lot of choices out there... especially when
you consider the fact that you never have to spend anything other than on
routine maintenance. (Even the tires aren't expensive) I could go on and
on, but visit their site and see for yourself -- better yet, go drive one!!
I will always have one of these!

Happy motoring -- and I'm so glad you're OK after the wreck, Andrea!!

Hi -
I have to second the 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan. The back windows go down -
one of only two on the market that do. The Honda MPV's do also, but it is a
smaller minivan and doesn't come in an AWD version.
The Sienna's rear seat also folds into the floor - really handy when you are
on the road and either need the seats or the space, and you don't have a
handy spot to store. My current dogmobile is a 96 Caravan - so I know that
the folding option, as odd as it may sound at first, will come in really
handy.
We have a loaded one on order - leather seats (easier to clean), and AWD.
For some reason, here in NH, the AWD version is harder to find.
Also, it is lower to the ground than an SUV - something we wanted to
consider for the dogs.
At 40K, it isn't cheap, but our plan is to use it until we run it into the
ground, and it will last the life of our dogs.
Good luck!

Hi Andrea,

I am waiting for a good excuse to get rid of my VW Passat wagon to get a
bigger dog vehicle. My VW has been great but I want something a bit roomier
for the dogs. I do worry about them in the car not crated. In the past I
was never interested in mini-vans and one reason was because the passenger
windows don't go down. However, I have decided on the new (2004) Toyota
Sienna mini-van. The passenger windows do go down, the AC is in the back,
AWD is available. It is wider than most vans so could fit 2 crates side by
side and still have the back seat or fold down the back seat to put another
crate in. It also has good ratings (as most Toyotas do). Good luck finding
the right vehicle.

 Hi all,
I'm in a bit of dilemma. I was in a car accident with
my '95 Subaru Legacy wagon last week. I had one crate
that sat sideways in the very rear of the car. If all
3 dogs went with me, one was in the crate and 2 were
loose in the folded down back seat. With now having 3
big dogs (and one a potential show dog) and more dog
stuff to haul around, I'm in a quandry of trying to
decide what type of vehicle to get now (my car was
totalled by the insurance company). I really want All
wheel drive (AWD) or 4 wheel drive for those nasty,
 muddy show parking areas.

I'm currently looking at a used Subaru Outback b/c I
really liked my car and a Chevy Astro van. Barkley's
breeder has a GMC Safari van (same as the Astro) and
just loves it. It has over 100,000 miles and has only
been in the shop for maintenance

Dear Cabela's Executive Management:

I'm writing to express my concern and disappointment in Cabela's for your
irresponsible decision to allow breeders to make puppies available for sale
at your recent Sporting Dog Seminars. I have been a Cabela's customer for
many years and I am also the responsible and proud owner of both a sporting
dog, a 5 year old Labrador Retriever, and a 1 year old Bernese Mountain Dog.
Both of these dogs were purchased through reputable breeders (far outside my
area) after considerable research and review by me. Please note: I also
had to be screened by these breeders to make sure I could provide an
appropriate and responsible home and environment for these dogs.

I'm not sure I can ever bring myself to patronize Cabela's again if you are
going to condone impulse puppy buying and allow irresponsible breeders
access to your facilities to peddle their puppies. This type of activity
could potentially have disastrous long-term results. Responsible breeders
(those with the future and the best interests of the breed in mind) are
always willing to discuss the breed, pros and cons, responsibilities of
ownership, etc., in an appropriate forum or one-on-one with potential dog
owners. With proper research and follow through by both the potential puppy
buyer and the breeder (the screening and qualifying should go both ways!)
hopefully breeding problems and unhappy owners -- and ultimately abandoned
or abused dogs -- can all be avoided. But never should there be an open
marketplace allowing disreputable breeders to take advantage of impulse
buyers who are not qualified. No reponsible breeder would participate in
this type of activity and no truly responsible trainer would condone it
either. Anyone involved in this has to be a puppy mill or a backyard
breeder interested strictly in money and not the long-term viability of the
breed.

I read this statement on your web site: Cabela's is committed to providing
quality products, value, service, and guaranteed customer satisfaction to
outdoorsmen and women throughout the world. With over 40 years of service to
our customers, our goals remain the same: a good deal, a fair shake, and
better service with quality products at competitive prices. That's what
Cabela's is about - today, yesterday, and for the future.

I implore you to take your own words to heart and be responsible about the
future of these wonderful sporting dogs... let's work together to make sure
they get a good deal, a fair shake and that we have in mind their best
interests for today, yesterday, and for the future.

Please support responsible breeding and dog ownership and through your words
and your deeds -- please, no more breeder displays and puppy sales -- help
us fight the battle against irresponsible breeding and sales practices.

I will reconsider my decision to boycott Cabela's products once I'm sure
your management understands the magnitude of this problem and does something
about it!

Thank you for your prompt attention. I look forward to your response and
hope I don't get the same form letter I've gotten copied on by countless
other responsible dog owners like me who are asking you to reconsider your
position on this subject.

Regards,

Jennifer Burgess

Just a quick note to everyone in the Berner world responsible for the great
presence (which communicated the RIGHT messages) in the new Dog Fancy. The
advertising was very effective and hopefully will cause anyone who's now all
abuzz about our beautiful Berners to think twice and do their homework
before bringing one of these pups home. I know how hard everyone worked to
position this great exposure properly with the best interest of the breed in
mind.

The full page ad is so well done and very much to-the-point -- and a special

the best vacuum for berner hair, allergy control, and overall cleaning air
freshening is the Rainbow by Rexair...all dirt, dust, dander, hair and
pollen are filtered through a water tank -- you would not believe how great
your house smells after using this vacuum... we have off-white berber carpet
throughout the house and a berner and a black lab who live indoors...the
Rainbow keeps the carpet looking smelling great!

expensive ($1200 - $1500), but worth it and they last about 30 years! and
they will save you on doctor bills since allergies are so much better...

the list continues to grow --- but so far, Rex (8 months) has eaten 9 pairs
of Victoria's Secret panties, 2 silk flower arrangements, 2 pairs of panty
hose, a Birkenstock, a glove, a packet of hot chocolate mix, a bar of soap,
a DVD case from Blockbuster (that was fun to explain), and my personal
favorite, my daughter's 22-page Honors U.S. History Term paper... luckily it
had already been graded -- she got an A. Thank goodness he leaves the
antique mahogany furniture alone!! So far...I can always tell when he's
eaten something unauthorized -- he avoids eye contact -- and he looks so
guilty!

glove had been used a lot and was soaked in hot dog juice. He threw it up

RE: Lap Sitting!!

2003-01-10 Thread Jennifer Burgess
I think the lap-sitting thing is one of the endearing traits of a Berner.
The image of a huge fluffy dog curled up (and over) his person, testing the
weight of the chair is comical and sweet at the same time -- just why we all
love these guys so much. I am actually considering a much larger chair just
so the ever-growing Rex (now 7.5 months) can be comfortable while sitting in
my lap. We started this when he came home with us from Sheila Dolan's farm
in Ala. (in fact, he sat in my daughter's lap the entire 6 hour drive home,
paws on each of her shoulders). From that day on, our laps are fair ground
for him. What amazes me is that he is so graceful and gentle despite his
size as he's climbing up, as if he knows to be careful and take it slow and
easy while settling in. Right now I have to push the ottoman up against
the chair just to accommodate both of us. By this time next year, things
will be out of hand, so I'm just going to get a really spacious chair. My
couch is suede, so we try to spend our snuggle time in the chair instead!

We have a lot of lap sitting going on in our house too! My first Berner was
always a lap sitter which we thought was very funny. We didn't realize
until
the 2nd that this must be a Berner trait. Both 100lb. males were lap
sitters!
One of mine would even sit on laps of strangers. At a youth football game
last
year some poor unsuspecting women was sitting indian style (his favorite
position) on the ground and he backed up and planted this big behind right
in
the middle of her lap. Imagine her surprise! Lucky for us she began to
laugh
and put her arms around him and gave him a hug. Maybe he knew she was a dog

Over the years they've surprised and entertained many guests to our home
with
their lap sitting antics. As standard practice I now warn all guests of the
potential danger of sitting down in our home g! A house with a Berner is
not
a good place to visit if you are not truly a dog lover!

RE: Shedding and vacuum cleaners

2002-12-30 Thread Jennifer Burgess
We have a Berner a black Lab in a house with an off-white kitchen floor
and cream-colored Berber carpet (and hardwood). I have a Rainbow Vacuum
which is absolutely the best. It's a canister style but filters the dirt,
dust, mold spores and hair through a water reservoir with an antibacterial
solution added. Does wonders with the dog hair and really cleans the dust,
dander germs out of the air. It's really powerful but so easy to
maneuver. (Comes with tons of tools, powered carpet attachment, hardwood
tile attachment, small brush, edge tool, upholstery small power head for
the stairs) When you finish vacuuming the house smells wonderful. It's a
big investment, but for someone with allergies and lots of dog hair, it's
well worth it. Our allergy problems have diminished significantly since I
got this vacuum cleaner in Feb of '99.

Here's the link to their site if anyone's interested:

You have to buy through a local dealer -- not sold in stores -- but they are
the best and last 20 - 30 years.

Glad to hear we're not the only ones with this problemOur boy Rex (7
months old) has consumed so many pairs of expensive Victoria's Secret
panties that we have come up with Rex Vorat Victoria Vestis as his
registered name...means king eats V.S. (under)clothes I have spent
on emergency vet visits (he would finally throw them up, thank goodness).
One time -- when he was about 4 months -- he threw up three pairs in about
20 minutes! We now have latches and lids on all hampers, all clean clothes
are immediately put into drawers, and nothing is left on the floor or within
his reach, which is quite expansive as he is a big boy! Closet and laundry
room doors remain closed at all times. He's the only boy in a house with
two human girls (one a teenager) and one female Lab

But that's been our only problem -- never has he touched furniture, shoes,
etc... so I suppose we should be grateful for that.

Eileen,

So happy you found your missing bra! I will share a
recent experience with Cutter our own laundry thief.

I awoke one morning to the sound of my husband cyring
'No! whilie running down the hall after
our then 14 week old pup Cutter. It was about 5:30am
and Barry had kindly let me sleep in and was getting
Cutter out for his morning business meeting. Barry
thought Cutter could not hold it and was wizzing his
way down the hall to the back door, as Cutter was
leaving a rather impressive trail of wet stuff.
Instead of running to the back door however, he ran
straight to his doggie bed in the living room. He
turned around, plopped down and showed Daddy his
treasure. My underwear, stolen from the laundry
basket and ceremoniuosly baptized in the water bowl
before racing with his treasure to his bed where all
his best treasures are taken.

Anyone esle care to air their dirty laundry?
