RE: PetSmart...puppy classes- other training tips

2003-07-01 Thread Lori Oshiro
PetSmart training
We took classes at PetSmart (So. San Francisco) recently for our new
Chinese Crested (TOY DOG) They have changed their philosophy over to
gentle training. They now do not allow choker collars in the class at
all and use only treats and encouragement to train with (plus lots of
practice).

Personally, I prefer the gentle method very much (choker collars have
always made me uncomfortable)..however, they DID mention that if you
have a large dog that is hard to control, a choker collar will be needed
at some point early on.

We trained our (my hubby's) BERNER (now 7 years old) at the SPCA and
they used the choker collar method and lots of praise and treats. We
found that with our berner, only loving happy praise was ALL he needed
and my hubby had him trained with hand signals in no time.

Now.. my TERRIER (mini schnauzer) is stubborn and persistent. A choker
collar was INDEED needed to get our messages across in the beginning.
However, as time went on (he's 11 years old now) I found that simply
lowering my voice and commanding him sternly worked best. He seems to
realize that when I lower my voice- I mean it... otherwise he will
decide on his own whether he wants to obey or not. He's a thinker.
With him I finally started using a harness on a extension leash and he
and I have developed a great clicking and tension communication with the
leash (it's one of those extension ones that goes up to 16 feet).

ANYWAY.. I guess my point is... your style of training depends solely on
the breed you have and your relationship with him/her. I suggest trying
various methods and use the one that works the best and easiest.

As for treats for training.. my terrier and toy dog will do anything for
treats however my hubby's berner only wants love love love and
praise to obey.
Hope this helped some.. lori

RE: drugged BMDs on the 4th of July

2003-06-28 Thread Lori Oshiro
HI... our pets are a little freaked out as well... This year we're gonna
take them out where that night where fireworks aren't such a bother.
Drugs aren't the worst idea however if your dog is really a wreck during
the 4th.

Just a thought.. lori

Any advice on BMDs who don't like 4th of July? I don't know what to do
with
my Bennington. Tranquilizers have come to mind; however, it seems so
mean.
Unfortunately, our house is very close to a fireworks show (extreme
sound
and sight). I have a feeling Bennington will be uncomfortable no matter
how
closed up and locked up the house is. He had a bad experience last
year...
too close for comfort. Any alternatives other than drugging Bennington?

Hi Pippa,
The source of meat meal may well be the same for natural foods. In
order
to be truly safe in what one feeds the dog the food would have to
certified
organic and slaughtered for human consumption. Even organic livestock
are
euthanised on the farm if they are not fit enough for transportation.
Even
if one chooses to feed raw natural (BARF) there are likely to be
residues
of antibiotics and hormone growth drugs in the meat and bones and then
there is the pesticide and genetic modified effects on the fruit and
veggies. Certified organic is the way to go but it is very expensive.

Re: Tilly - thank your for her story- you touched our hearts

2003-06-24 Thread Lori Oshiro
Dear Pam and family... thank you so much for Tilly's story... my heart was
breaking and then warmed up as tears rolled down my cheeks this morning as I
read your tribute to her. Tilly was so blessed with a companion like you.
I will never forget your sweet baby after reading her story. Thank you for
touching my heart. I hope in time your pain will ease into a gentle warmth.

Thanks..
