NOT AGAIN - Vacuum Cleaners (Hoover or similar experts only)

2003-07-16 Thread CHOFFMAN319
Hi all,

I am trying this post on my old basement computer as it only has AOL VERSION
5.0, so it should come in ledgable right???

Delema: Husband said, "Here's the checkbook, go get a new vacuum today", as
the one we had, which I thought worked fine, he says is broken. This all
happened a few days ago when I asked him to help me change the bag. Changing a
bag??? Anyways, garbage man came yesterday and took our Marshall Industrial
Vac away and the husband wants me to get a Hoover ___? Windtunnel? w/out
bags. He wants to be able to dispense the hair, dirt himself, which really
means me.

I know we've had this discussion several timeson the L, but I did not pay
enough attention to detail as I was not in the market for a vac.

Not to tie up the list on this but could a few of you e-mail me private if
you've got time this early afternoon because today is the day and I need one
strong enough to pick up not only Berner hair but kids messes, cats fur, gerbils
shavings (he is real messy) and bird feathers and seeds. I need the most
powerful Hoover for the least price. (ha) He does not want me spending $800 on an
industrial model or the price of a Berner for a Rainbow, which was our vacuum
before the Marshall. He said go up to SEARS.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Time is of the essance as husband is now LOOKING for checkbook.

Best regards,

My friend Pat, Marcy's "Agent" brought her to the shoot- I had to work :-(
Honestly, I can't say how it 'worked.' but Marcy was kind enough to shed for
them for the shoot, Pat said. and it cleaned it up. They cost about $200.
She said it was quiet- Marcy had to lie down while the it vacuumed around
her.
I can't imagine something the size of a dinner plate to be large enough to
hold all the dog and cat hair in this house... plus all the dirt + the kids
(3) & friends track in and out...

(I have a $125 Sears Kenmore Whispertone canister (which is not so quiet)-
but did an ok job when it was new; 5 years ago- but there's a bend in the
hose attachment (where it connects to a solid metal tube where you turn the
rotor on and off) and which you can't access- and that gets clogged- and is
most difficult to clear- and I doubt it is cleared completely at this
point... I wouldn't buy this machine again; and would look for a machine
that does not have this sort of bend- or is at least accessible...
I like the canister "hoses" because you can also get the dog hair that gets
stuck in the cobwebs in the ceilings and rafters. An upright would just be
a pain for me. I change the bag about every 2-3 weeks and vacuum on average
4-5 times per week...) Bags are not cheap. (amazing I buy something I'm
only going to throw away!) Me, I reduce/reuse/recycle in other areas of my
life but I have to have a bag- as un-environmentally sound as it may be- I
don't want to see or know how much dirt I've cleaned up- 'just make it go
away!' the idea of cleaning a vacuum is not for me!

I have a "shop vac" for my grooming shop and I'm considering getting a small
one for $45 for the house when I have to replace the Kenmore- which will
probably be w/in the year. They have more 'horse power and larger
capacities plus can handle water- than a conventional house vacuum. I have
hard wood, tile, and slate floors... with the exception of 2 rooms with area
rugs... so I don't know how they handle wall to wall...
cheers.

The "obvious" choice will then have to be the "Roomba" robotic vacuum- I
guess you turn it on in the morning before work, and come home to a vacuumed
house...

I only 'recommend' such a machine because Marcy (Bernese, of course) just
did an ad for QVC for this machine!
So you will have to look for it on QVC.com and Roomba literature...

Oh, is that a brag?!

Just a note on a vacuum to avoid...the new Hoover Windtunnel V2 bagless, beltless
model ($250 + pricetag)
I thought this was a great vacuum when I first got it, but soon I started to smell
burning hair/rubber. I cleaned Berner hair out of the bristles frequently, but still
the smell persisted whenever I used the vacuum. After 3 months of use, the beater bars
totally quit turning. The repairman took it all apart, discovered that fur had worked
itself into and around the gears (remember, no belt), the friction had created enough
heat to melt the plastic housing, and the gears had been completely ruined. So, since
it was still under warranty, the entire gear unit was replaced, but unfortunately this
is a design flaw that will require us to take apart and clean out the mechanism on a
very regular basis, a real pain. So, while this may be a great vacuum for normal
households (or even ones with short-haired dogs), it's one to avoid in Bernese homes.

I asked the same question about 18 months ago. We had moved from the
Netherlands to Canada and had to leave most of our electrical equipment
behind (different voltage & frequency).
We were renting a fully carpeted house (beige carpet!!) and eventually
settled on a Hoover windtunnel mach 4.7 upright cleaner. It seemed to cope
pretty well at first but went through belts like nobody's business. Sniff,
sniff, smells like burning rubber, ah yes, the hair has just tangled round
the roller and is about to ruin yet another belt.
It comes with a little rotary hand power brush for doing things like
stairs. Great! Well, if it didn't tangle up with hair I'm sure it would
work quite well.
Now we've moved into our own house and installed pergo on the ground floor.
The hoover only has to cope with the upstairs rooms and it's still burning
rubber.

How I wish I could find a Philips Vision Canister vac here in Canada.

WE are using the largest upright, bag type Hoover they make and it is great.

It has never plugged up but I do clean the brush about every 4th time we use
it.

Our Dyson is fabulous at coping with mountains of Berner hair. It also
ensures a hasty exit on the part of Santa, as he believes it has come to
kill us all and there's no way he's staying around on the off-chance we
might survive (again). Strangely enough, the Dyson at our old dog training
club class didn't bother him a bit.

I'd like to know the favorite vacuum cleaners of my fellow Berner buddies.
I'm looking for something that isn't a strain to use. We use a manual push
sweeper that's effective but an increasing physical strain.
Thanks!

RE: Shedding and vacuum cleaners

2002-12-30 Thread Jennifer Burgess
We have a Berner & a black Lab in a house with an off-white kitchen floor
and cream-colored Berber carpet (and hardwood). I have a Rainbow Vacuum
which is absolutely the best. It's a canister style but filters the dirt,
dust, mold spores and hair through a water reservoir with an antibacterial
solution added. Does wonders with the dog hair and really cleans the dust,
dander & germs out of the air. It's really powerful but so easy to
maneuver. (Comes with tons of tools, powered carpet attachment, hardwood &
tile attachment, small brush, edge tool, upholstery & small power head for
the stairs) When you finish vacuuming the house smells wonderful. It's a
big investment, but for someone with allergies and lots of dog hair, it's
well worth it. Our allergy problems have diminished significantly since I
got this vacuum cleaner in Feb of '99.

Here's the link to their site if anyone's interested:

You have to buy through a local dealer -- not sold in stores -- but they are
the best and last 20 - 30 years.

We have the 28 AMP Hoover Wind Tunnel Bag type. It does a super job and have
not had any problem. We do clean the brush about every third time. What we
really like is the Power Head attachment for the furniture. With 3 adult
females and a 11 week old male pup it does get a chance to pick up lots of
hair. Seems like one of the gals is always blowing coat.

I've had my Miele at the shop so many times for the burning smell. I always
clean it up before I bring it in out of shear embarrassment for the amount
of hair in the beater bar and when the owner (Klaus,--we're on a first name
basis now) runs it for 20 minutes he smells nothing. I finally figured out
that it was dog, cat, and my hair in the beater bar. The last time I went
into the shop Klaus' jaw dropped and he said "What? No vacuum cleaner?!" I
told him I just needed bags. :-)
