Ooops, you said had recently chewed up remote control! Did he chew something up the month ago before the ulcers? Well worth a check here with the vet as those bits can be sharp and plastics and stuff can have funny effect if a bit gets stuck in the gum or between the teeth! Hmmm! Large meaty marrow bones prescribed from here! After vet check! So saying, my Simmy progressed from the remote to my leather purse and credit cards despite loads of RMB's and he'd never done anything like this before. Thankfully, this was only a short time where I swear he was cutting wisdom teeth? Previously as pup had been so good, this came out of the blue, so unexpected, was spate lasted around three weeks, then back to the bones. Watched him very carefully after the remote episode, bits everywhere and just prayed none finished up inside him! Much later, he was fine, but, get vet to check Hans's gums carefully! Just in case! There are several things that can cause bleeding. The first that comes to my mind when both oral ulcers and bleeding gums are presented is auto-immune disease. You might want to consider a workup by your vet, possibly including an LE prep and ANA tests if Hans hasn't been on any antibiotics or steroids. Alternatively, the bleeding gums can be caused by a clotting disorder, the most common one in BMDs being vWD Type 1. Your vet can do a mucosal bleeding time test to assess clotting time and/or you can do the VetGen DNA test specific for Typoe 1 vWD and/or you can do a vWf assay (preferably through Cornell). In any event, your vet should probably check Hans for bleeding in other mucosal areas. Another possibility is if Hans got into any rat or mouse poisin like warfarin. Many products now have a time delay built into them that can cause affects a month after ingestion. I'm sure there are other possibilities, these are the ones friends have experienced to cause gum bleeding and oral ulcers in bernese. -Sherri Venditti
bleeding gums
Does anyone have any experience with bleeding gums in Berners? Yesterday I noticed that Han's gums around his teeth were unusually red and several of his teeth had blood around the base. His mouth is definitely sore, he hasn't chewed up a remote control in a week. He had a bout of ulcers in his mouth about a month ago could both incidents be related? If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. He is not taking any medications at the moment so that couldn't be the problem. Thanks in advance, --- Beverly Arnold
