Re: Venting
After walking our two large males through a crowded tourist town, one day, and having it take twice as long as it should, my friend had tee-shirts made up that said, Yes, he is a big dog. Janice Parky Cape Cod, MA
venting
Yep. That's why I said it in the first place. It's venting. I never actually SAY these things to people, and I'm always happy to answer questions about my boat boys, but sometimes hearing the same comments and questions DOES get tiresome. Nice to have a place to just snicker a little bit. Andie Reid, owned by Tugboat and Steamboat Wilmington, NC

I either just taught you all how to say it or confused everyone :) DonaLeigh Engstrom Plano, TX owned by Enzo (7 month Berner) and Schumi (4 month Swissy) -- __ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup

During a conversation with my hairdresser (my bangs covered my nose-time for a trim) yesterday made me realize that my pronunciation (you all) may be questionable on the bernese/burmese issue. She also thought that it was Burmese Mt Dog - I say berner a lot and bur and ber are pronounced the same. When I say Bernese I try to emphasize the 'bear' - in German e is pronounced a. Right??? venting
Here's another perspective: I always try to educate people about the breed if they ask, but why is it so terrible if they think your dog is a mixed breed? Maybe they won't want one! In my experience, most people's comments and questions about the dogs are not said with malicious intent. Patiently supplying information about the breed, while maybe sneaking in another piece of education such as why not to buy puppies at pet stores, works for me. Vicky Hall in Utah
Re: venting or stupid questions
Hi Beverly Dear listers, Interesting post about the pronounciation of Berner sennenhund. I have no idea what a Georgian accent sounds like - is it like Scarlett O'Hara's? You are absolutely right: saying bear- then -ner is as about as close as you can get to the European pronounciation of Berner. The city and canton of Bern in Switzerland are pronounced Bearn. Sennenhund isn't too hard either - sennen rhymes with the one of the Beatles last names. The vowel in hund is a bit of a toughie - kind of like the vowel sound in the word could or wood. Berner Hugs to all, Cecilia Ståhl and Griffin Stockholm Sweden PS: Anyone ever noticed that when you use the spelling check tool on Outlook Express, it insists on replacing the word Berner with burner? Makes me crazy . . . geeze, they don't even rhyme : ) airdresser (my bangs covered my nose-time for a trim) yesterday made me realize that my pronunciation (you all) may be questionable on the bernese/burmese issue. He had the nerve to tell me that I got ripped off, if I thought that he was a purebred dog! He said, it was obvious that Stevie was a newfie and St.Bernard mix with probably a little rottie thrown in for good measure. Can you imagine the nerve!!! Yes the continuous addressing of my Burmese Mountain Dog sometimes makes me want to make a frigging placard to hang around his beloved neck with indeed the correct spelling!! Glad to hear I am not the only one who sometimes gets a wee bit annoyed! But I guess on the other end of the scale the amount of people who absolutely adore Stevie balances it out. I take my gentle giant to a huge pet store every Sunday afternoon that I can, around about the same time. There are actually people who come especially to see Stevie, although they are usually ones who know about my miracle boy and cheered him on during his recuperation. Of course, the staff there, absolutely unconditionally spoil him rotten. He just soaks it up!! Love to you and yours Berner hugs and kisses Karen and Stevie NB,Canada - Original Message - From: Andie Reid [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Berner List [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, June 03, 2003 1:13 PM Subject: venting --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Do you mind if I use your response to question 3? I really would love to tell someone that with only a hint of sarcasm in my voice. They wouldn't know they've been insulted...hehehehe...I love that. Re: venting
Hi John...I see you have both a Swissy and a Bernese. I have two Bernese, but someone insisted the other day that I'd been misled and that my younger dog was definitely a Swissy. I tried to explain that my one-year-old had just totally blown her baby coat, and wouldn't always look short-haired, but I could not convince this person...Oh, well! Andie; That's okay, at least they think yours is a purebred Saint. I had someone ask me once is Klarsson was a St. Bernard/Border Collie cross. Can you imagine. I just hope the female was the Saint and not the BC. Ouch!!! Wendy Keene, Klarsson (proud to be full-blood BMD) and Lilah (the right colored Sheltie) Hampton, VA

Re: Venting
I used to be both amused by and slightly resent having my girls mislabeled as St. Bernards, or mixes or some other corruption of breeds... but on balance, I think that is preferable to what I experience now. Now I walk my dogs and nearly everyone very matter-of-factly says oh a Bernese Mountain dog. I have several friends who have these dogs. Point being, at number 51 and moving up fast on the AKC list of most popular breeds, pressure to breed for demand is leading to lots of irresponsible breeders cropping up everywhere, pumping out puppies as fast as they can without regard to health and/or temperament issues. I have trouble seeing this as a positive thing. Mary Shaver and the girls, Laurel and Bailey Fayetteville, GA
