2008-10-14 Thread dwilliams01

Most installs have a "custom" and "express" install modes. I'd suggest
that model. Although I have to admit I've never seen even an express
mode that didn't ask for directory names of where to install and I'd
think that the music library location would fall into that category as
well - seems pretty fundamental and straightforward a question, you can
default the answer, so worst case it is one extra click.

i should have been clearer...

first, all the posts about TPE2 in the forum. theres a lot of them.
if you search for it, you'll see a lot of them revolve about how its
used by SC, both b4, and after, 8001.

second, that all the major apps use it and set it. itunes, wmp,
winamp, etc... it doesn't matter if users are aware or not, the apps
are. and itunes just retags and renames and does all kinds of crap
willy nilly. but even the more respectful apps like winamp use it both
ripping and retagging via gracenote or wherever.

i think if SC aggregates stats, and i think they do, i think you'd find
a significant percentage of mp3 users are already using a feature (8001)
thats extremely new, [7.1]

i'd even be willing to say it should be the default for new installs.

i admit, i am guessing from observed evidence, but i base it off of the
marketplace leader apps and the many posts in the forum about it. i'd
even guess you use it, (as per 8004, right?)

but i didn't mean to get into a "who's right" thing... you were
clearly right about 8001 only needing to map to SC's internal
ALBUMARTIST field, and not the BAND field. while i never said i was
SURE it had to do both, i did suspect it would based on the denoting
option, but for the moment anyway, that isn't the case... (who knows
what the new schema might break?)

its just that i think you think that its some esoteric thing when to
me, its clearly not.

if so, then they are lucky to have perfect tags that do what they want,
or itunes integration suffices. in my case, i ONLY GOT INVOLVED in all
that stuff you just laid out BECAUSE SC was so screwy.

and who knows how many people were in my boat who got turned off by SC
since it had no option pre 7.1? believe me, i came very close to
saying screw it too, when i couldn't get anyone to listen to my issues
with it, since many here are FLAC or gearheaded and thought the issue
was with me... (and honestly, i had very little command of the issue
to explain it, it took a lot of time for me to have the knowledge
necessary).

its not JUST that instance... remember, it was ALL my "compilation"
albums whether they were VA or not. it made a hell of a mess, and it
was only worse if i went by defaults, which showed all artists and
didn't group anything.

but yes, it would be interesting to get a snapshot in time of just what
tags each app is using, and how when ripping, and/or auto-retagging /
renaming files.

one thing i am sure of, MOST mp3 users, BY FAR, are using TPE2 as album
artist in the apps, and NOT as band (which would be by spec). the
amount of users actually using TPE2 for strictly and purposely for
"band" is probably under 1%

anyway, i appreciate your comments.

I wouldn't mind using the script to clear my cache and logs - it would
save me from using the Windows GUI.

With non-standard log and cache directories, how does the script find

There's one thing I'd like to keep - the user/cookie based preferences
for thumbnails and sorting in the web interface. I cleared the cache
just now, but kept cookies.dat, and still had to set thumbnail and
sorting preferences in the web ui. How can this be preserved?

Why are you clearly correct - what evidence?

I would hazard a guess that there are many users of SC that have never
looked into music tagging standards, made changes on the settings page
and rescanned. I would guess there are many users that have not
upgraded to SC7, nor know that there is support for TPE2 => Album
Artist.

It would be interesting to run an experiment into different music
applications/rippers installed with default settings, to see how they
tag songs when ripping an album that has a guest performer on a single
track, how such an album would be presented in those apps and in SC,
and how many users actually care.

As I understood it this is a "remove all settings and reset to defaults" (which

ok, i'm very confused, b/c in this thread you say its a reasonable
request, file a bug:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53743

perhaps i don't understand the difference between user prefs, server
prefs, and initial install settings of those prefs?

i did read the bug you qouted, and my first question is if the script
is going to run in slimtray, why couldn't it kill SC, restore to
initial install defaults, and restart SC? if u intend to have a 'setup
wizard' in the webui like you were talking to jim about, perhaps it
could even retrigger that process?

but secondly, why couldn't options that aren't set during setup at
whatever point, have a restore defaults button?

my desire? or do you mean customers in general?

i'm not sure if i'm being unclear or what...

but i have consistently argued for the same thing, not more or less,
but the same thing.

during install/setup, a new user/install should have the chance, the
option, to click a button, one single button, to access some of the SC
options that are important prior to setup finishing, and prior to any
automatic scan/rescan, (which also should be optional via the button).

a new user can ignore the button, or use it. their choice. i don't
understand slims reluctance to allow this, and i think a new user who
gets a bunch of weird unexpected results in their library will be
confused, or at least disappointed, esp if the defaults don't jive with
them.
