Yes, MySQL was probably also affected.

Shut down the server and delete all the database files, that should
cause it to rescan.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SQLite WAL in 7.6.1 - please test

2011-08-09 Thread andyg

It's OK if performance is a bit less than before, I'm not so worried
about that as long as it scans correctly. Turning off exclusive locking
is probably the main reason for this, I may see if it can be re-enabled
later.

Some people are reporting missing around half their files. This was a
bug I also ran into while developing but I thought I had fixed it. If
you have this problem, can you try moving your existing
squeezebox-persistent.* files out of the way and see if the problem
goes away with a full scan?

I don't think it matters on Windows if the files show up as 8.3
filenames or not. SQLite has internal Win32 code that should take care
of this sort of thing.

Note that if you're using a SQLite viewer app that it will need to be
new enough to support WAL mode, make sure you have the latest version.

[SlimDevices: Beta] SQLite WAL in 7.6.1 - please test

2011-08-08 Thread andyg

I've made a rather large change in 7.6.1 today: SQLite now runs in WAL
mode ('see here for the gory technical details'
(http://sqlite.org/wal.html)):

* Server and standalone scanner now share the same set of 3 database
files (squeezebox.db, squeezebox-persistent.db, and ArtworkCache.db).
No more copying back and forth to "-scanner" files, etc.
* "Database is locked" errors while scanning should go away.
* locking_mode=EXCLUSIVE has been removed.
* You can see and use changes in the database while the scanner is
running, the way it used to be.

Also, I found a bug in the persistent table during this work, the
'added' column was storing the file's modification timestamp instead of
the time when the file was originally added. I had to fix this in order
to get the scanner to work right for new files. Hopefully this will not
cause any issues with plugins.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Transcoding problems - ver. 7.6.0 - r32302

2011-08-04 Thread andyg

That won't work, most tags live at the beginning of the file (unless you
just want ID3v1). So you'd have to do some heroics to get the tag
written before any of the audio data is sent. SBS has never been
concerned with tag writing, and this is such a niche use case.
Transcoding URLs are intended only for players that can get the
metadata from another source, such as UPnP for example.

JPEG has a neat feature where you can pull out pre-shrunk images at
certain ratios without needing to load the entire image. So no matter
how large the JPEG is, it will be efficient to get a resized version.
Unfortunately PNG has no such feature.

The way UPnP devices play files (it is really just an HTTP download) is
not tied into the usual playback code and so won't trigger the usual
things such as scrobbling or the iTunes update plugin.

Hmm ISO files would require transcoding, you can't stream an ISO over
the network to something like Revue. Video transcoding is doable but
not something we're looking at for the initial version.

Also with ISO you'd have to transcode just the primary video/audio
stream right? You'd lose DVD menus and such. This would be pretty
interesting though...

Make sure you authorize it to play, WMP has a complex permissions setup
so you might need to grant access.

JRMC works now with r31869. There seems to be an issue in the JRMC HTTP

our XML parser doesn't like. I added a workaround.

Nothing's changed as far as I know. Perl does not ever release memory
to the OS so if you do something that allocates 500M you are going to
be sitting at 500M the entire life of the process. The memory will of
course be reused internally for other Perl things though.

Right now clear & rescan uses the external scanner because it will be
faster. Scan for changes runs internally. Longer-term I have some
plans to replace most of the scanner code with C code that can run in a
separate thread in the main process, which will remove the need for an
external scanner.

Some of those are just controllers and not players by the way.

The ICU changes are completely unrelated to file names. It is to enable
correct sorting for database queries for our supported languages. This
functionality is built-in to MySQL but requires an external library
with SQLite.

http://site.icu-project.org/

Also I don't think we'll see this on TinySBS, as it requires a large
amount of extra space for the library and data file. TinySBS currently
can only sort using the en_US.UTF8 locale data.

BTW the major reason we're doing this is to reduce load on MySB.
Outgoing grfe frames account for about 88% of our outgoing slimproto

* Reduce bandwidth costs.
* Reduce CPU usage on the servers.
* Reduce packets-per-second our load balancers have to deal with.
* Improve user experience with much smoother scrolling.

Yeah it's not a matter of finding the changed files, it's a matter of
checking all dependent things based on the tags in that file, such as

Yeah adding some logging of files that are non-optimal would be pretty
useful.

I always just do ./scanner.pl --wipe or use the wipe and rescan web UI
option.

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 artwork improvements & tips

2010-09-18 Thread andyg

I just wanted to post some info about the artwork improvements I've made
in 7.6, and some tips to keep in mind when adding artwork to your
library.

GD has been completely replaced by a new module I wrote called
'Image::Scale' (http://search.cpan.org/dist/Image-Scale). I took the
high-quality GD resizing algorithm and reimplemented it using
fixed-point math. The quality output is identical, and performance is
about the same or slightly faster on systems with good floating-point
like x86, but hugely improved on systems like ReadyNAS and SheevaPlug
which don't have floating-point units. I also added BMP support, which
GD never supported for some reason.

x86, ARM, and Sparc ReadyNAS also got some assembly code for the
hottest parts of the tight inner resizing loop. On x86 I switched to
'libjpeg-turbo' (http://libjpeg-turbo.virtualgl.org/) which is a 2-4x
faster version of libjpeg.

Some tips on getting the best artwork performance: The best way to go
is to always use square JPEG images. Also very important is to be sure
all JPEG images are not progressive. Progressive JPEGs use a ridiculous
amount of extra memory proportional to the pixel resolution to
decompress and it also wastes time. On TinySBS progressive JPEGs will
have to be skipped as it can easily cause it to run out of memory. For
regular JPEGs, you can use any resolution you want, even a giant
multi-megapixel digital camera image will not use any more memory than
a small image because of the way JPEG can pre-scale to a smaller size
before decompression.

You should avoid the use of PNG or GIF images. These use more memory
proportional to the resolution and are also slower to decompress. If
you have non-square JPEG images, we have to resize them to transparent
PNGs so they fit properly within various square UI elements, and this
will take extra time and cache space.

Try a wipe and rescan and let me know what you think.

What are the specs of your server? Artwork resizing has been vastly
improved by not using floating-point math, and on some platforms like
ReadyNAS it's amazingly improved. :)

Yeah good question, we should try to fix it. I imagine it will involve a
lot of work though. :(

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Stability of 7.6?

2010-09-17 Thread andyg

No, it's not worth it to build a huge preference for this. Artwork
resizing is very fast now on all platforms and removing one size isn't
going to do anything other than saving a bit of disk space. Also I
plan to improve this even more by moving the series resizing code into
C at some point.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 Image scaling: trying to get more bytes than in buffer

2010-09-16 Thread andyg

OK the problem is the Exif code didn't work properly, your Exif tag has
a 10K thumbnail and it wasn't being read into the buffer. Will be
fixed in the next version.

Great, thanks, I can reproduce the problem.

Those are only seen with artwork debug on, they are just info messages,
not warnings. They just appear that way because of how the resizer code
is implemented.

Audio::Scan 0.85 is in tonight's 7.6 nightly and calculates MD5 from the
middle of the file. It also supports an md5_offset option. Please give
this a try and let us know the results.

No it won't work with cue sheets, you'll have to specify this yourself.
SBS stores the offset and size of each cue track but Audio::Scan
doesn't know about those values.
