Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] SQLite WAL in 7.6.1 - please test
It's OK if performance is a bit less than before, I'm not so worried about that as long as it scans correctly. Turning off exclusive locking is probably the main reason for this, I may see if it can be re-enabled later. Some people are reporting missing around half their files. This was a bug I also ran into while developing but I thought I had fixed it. If you have this problem, can you try moving your existing squeezebox-persistent.* files out of the way and see if the problem goes away with a full scan? I don't think it matters on Windows if the files show up as 8.3 filenames or not. SQLite has internal Win32 code that should take care of this sort of thing. Note that if you're using a SQLite viewer app that it will need to be new enough to support WAL mode, make sure you have the latest version. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89450 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
[SlimDevices: Beta] SQLite WAL in 7.6.1 - please test
I've made a rather large change in 7.6.1 today: SQLite now runs in WAL mode ('see here for the gory technical details' (http://sqlite.org/wal.html)): * Server and standalone scanner now share the same set of 3 database files (squeezebox.db, squeezebox-persistent.db, and ArtworkCache.db). No more copying back and forth to "-scanner" files, etc. * "Database is locked" errors while scanning should go away. * locking_mode=EXCLUSIVE has been removed. * You can see and use changes in the database while the scanner is running, the way it used to be. Also, I found a bug in the persistent table during this work, the 'added' column was storing the file's modification timestamp instead of the time when the file was originally added. I had to fix this in order to get the scanner to work right for new files. Hopefully this will not cause any issues with plugins. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89450 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta
Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Transcoding problems - ver. 7.6.0 - r32302
That won't work, most tags live at the beginning of the file (unless you just want ID3v1). So you'd have to do some heroics to get the tag written before any of the audio data is sent. SBS has never been concerned with tag writing, and this is such a niche use case. Transcoding URLs are intended only for players that can get the metadata from another source, such as UPnP for example. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87343 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

Right now clear & rescan uses the external scanner because it will be faster. Scan for changes runs internally. Longer-term I have some plans to replace most of the scanner code with C code that can run in a separate thread in the main process, which will remove the need for an external scanner. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84697 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

The ICU changes are completely unrelated to file names. It is to enable correct sorting for database queries for our supported languages. This functionality is built-in to MySQL but requires an external library with SQLite. http://site.icu-project.org/ Also I don't think we'll see this on TinySBS, as it requires a large amount of extra space for the library and data file. [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.6 artwork improvements & tips
I just wanted to post some info about the artwork improvements I've made in 7.6, and some tips to keep in mind when adding artwork to your library. GD has been completely replaced by a new module I wrote called 'Image::Scale' (http://search.cpan.org/dist/Image-Scale). I took the high-quality GD resizing algorithm and reimplemented it using fixed-point math. The quality output is identical, and performance is about the same or slightly faster on systems with good floating-point like x86, but hugely improved on systems like ReadyNAS and SheevaPlug which don't have floating-point units. I also added BMP support, which GD never supported for some reason. x86, ARM, and Sparc ReadyNAS also got some assembly code for the hottest parts of the tight inner resizing loop. On x86 I switched to 'libjpeg-turbo' (http://libjpeg-turbo.virtualgl.org/) which is a 2-4x faster version of libjpeg. Some tips on getting the best artwork performance: The best way to go is to always use square JPEG images. Also very important is to be sure all JPEG images are not progressive. Progressive JPEGs use a ridiculous amount of extra memory proportional to the pixel resolution to decompress and it also wastes time. On TinySBS progressive JPEGs will have to be skipped as it can easily cause it to run out of memory. For regular JPEGs, you can use any resolution you want, even a giant multi-megapixel digital camera image will not use any more memory than a small image because of the way JPEG can pre-scale to a smaller size before decompression. You should avoid the use of PNG or GIF images. These use more memory proportional to the resolution and are also slower to decompress. If you have non-square JPEG images, we have to resize them to transparent PNGs so they fit properly within various square UI elements, and this will take extra time and cache space. Try a wipe and rescan and let me know what you think. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82087 ___ beta mailing list beta@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/beta

No, it's not worth it to build a huge preference for this. Artwork resizing is very fast now on all platforms and removing one size isn't going to do anything other than saving a bit of disk space.
