[SlimDevices: Beta] Transponder dropouts when microwave is running

2010-02-11 Thread pfarrell

Before I even got my Transporter, I ran ethernet cable to my SB so that
RF interference would not impact the music.

Recently, I bought a new Microwave oven, because the old one would stop
WiFi access to my laptop, etc. (and Controller and Boom). The new
Microwave is much better, but it can still cause slowdowns on WiFi, just
not complete loss of connection.

Recently, the Microwave is causing my Transporter to stop playback.
This is most strange, since the Transporter is still hardwired to the
Ethernet switch, as is my SBS.

Nope to all. The TP is hardwired to a switch that also contains the
hardwired connection to the SBS server.

There are no wifi bridges in the house.

The Microwave is in the kitchen, the TP in the living room. Its only 20
feet or so apart. The Microwave is only a week or two old.

The microwave door actually points to my listening chair.

There is no router in the path. Just a 100baseT switch.

This same link has worked perfectly for about 5 years.

I bought a SB1-G wired-only when the SB1-G came out because I had the
Ethernet wiring in place, and at the time, it was $40 cheaper to skip
the WiFi card.

It interfers with the WiFi to my laptop some, but much less than the

How do I get it "checked out"?

As if I have an AM radio. I haven't listened to one of them in

I did have a tuner with an AM section back in 1971, but that was when I
lived in a college town with no FM stations.

[SlimDevices: Beta] rescan fails to find new muisc, 7.6.0 - r31134

2010-07-30 Thread pfarrell

I've been running the beta server for ages, since the Touch was in early
beta, or before. I periodically just do a "apt-get update/upgrade" on my
music server and it generally works just fine.

I don't buy new music all that frequently. But I've noticed twice over
the past six or so weeks that when I do add a new album or two, that it
does not sow up in either the bottom of the main server page:

832 albums with 10537 songs by 538 artists.

and they are not in the "new music" menu/display.

But if I manually search by genre, they are there, and can be played.

Sorry, I don't have more exact information on when this started.

Its more than a refresh issue. Its not there. Not on another computer,
not on my Touch or using the HTTP interface, not on my Controller.

I don't know how to do better debugging/problem isolation.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] Request: Test new SqueezeCenter Debian Package

2008-01-04 Thread pfarrell

I just tried the latest today (jan 4) on my pure debian box. It worked
perfectly.

All I did was an "apt-get remove slimserver"
"apt-get update" and then
"apt-get install squeezecenter"

Worked perfectly. Nice startup wizard to select my library directory.

Good work. Thanks

[SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 - r28243 breaks albums

2009-08-23 Thread pfarrell

I've been testing 7.4 for months, on Debian Lenny. I noticed that the
version had not changed in a while. I had been running 7.4 - r27933 for
nearly a month, and it worked fairly well for me. In other forum
sections, I have seen references to later versions, so I manually
downloaded and installed Version: 7.4 - r28243 @ Sat Aug 22

It was an ugly upgrade, with the userid changes making all my music
invisible to the SC.

After making a bunch of random changes, including changing the
ownership
of all my music files, I've now got a music library,
and its playing a song now.

But the new SBS is screwing up presentation of the binding between an
album and a song

For example, I just bought the Robert Plant Allison Kraus album. In
"new
music" it shows 13 albums, each containing one song.

It may be some sort of tagging issue, as some albums have lots of
songs,
and others are duplicated.

This is clearly something that started when I moved from 7.4 - r27933
to Version: 7.4 - r28243 @ Sat Aug 22

Is this a known problem? Should I open a bug on it?
Thanks
Pat

The box has been a dedicated Slimserver/SqueezeCenter/SBS forever.
I do store files on it, and its got a dummy Apache, but its not on a

Seems to me that would be classified as a install script bug, a big

Years ago, I played directly with the database, which I remember is on
some non-standard port. But I don't remember the details of how to even
do that.

(I've been using MySql professionally for a long time, so I can drive
once the proper local SD voodoo is know.)

Do you want to use mysql-admin to drop the database? or just
mysql-client to drop all the tables?

Is there a handy script to drop all the tables at once?

This sure seems extreme to me.

2009-08-23 Thread pfarrell

I tried a fairly radical version of what JJ suggested. I used Synaptic
to remove all traces of squeezebox* squee* mysql*

Complete removal, with deletion of config files, etc.

Then I had synaptic install squeezeboxserver

This installed Version: 7.4 - r28244 @ Sun Aug 23 04:00:28 PDT 2009

Interesting side note, it installed MySql 5.0, I would have expected
MySql 5.1 since that is the current release.

Did a full clear and rescan.

Same result, some albums are broken, one song stored in duplicate
albums. Thirteen "albums" for Raising Sand.
Internally, the FLAC/Orbis tags are all identical.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] 7.4 - r28243 breaks albums

2009-09-02 Thread pfarrell

It appears that the broken albums all contain MUSICBRAINZ tags.
Those without it work just as they have for years. The three with
MUSICBRAINZ tags, all appear as single song albums under 7.4

[SlimDevices: Beta] SS7 - where is "repeat" controlled

2007-09-19 Thread pfarrell

I'm running SlimServer Version: 7.0 - 13050 - RedHat - EN - utf8
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i386-linux
MySQL Version: 5.0.21-standard

using the default skin.
The default seems to be to repeat the current playlist.
There is a nice looking loop icon to click in the playlist side/frame,
but clicking it seems to do nothing. It doesn't change state, and
doesn't seem to go from loop to one-through.

So how to I turn off looping?

And what is the icon supposed to actually do?

Seems kinda basic for the default skin.

And the loop control icon on the Jive-remote is "not yet implemented"
as well.

> And what is the icon supposed to actually do?

exactly what you expect, but it's a work in progress and this feature
isn't implemented yet.

kinda expect basic functions to work. Guess I'll go look at the bugzilla
and make sure this is entered.

[SlimDevices: Beta] SS7 Rpm forgets JSON::XS

2007-09-26 Thread pfarrell

I've been running SS7 for a while now, and decided to get current again.
The initial install was a bit of a challenge, mostly because my
SlimServer box runs Mandriva, and the Mandriva folks seem to make my
life difficult.

I installed it initially from the tarball, did the manual CPAN tricks,
got it working.

Just tried to update using the RPM and it complains
Starting SlimServer: The following modules failed to load: JSON::XS

I don't know if this is supposed to work, using an RPM on top of a
tarball. I'd like to get out of the tarball cycle.

Thanks
Pat

Now I do. Most strange, I had been running SS7 for about ten days,
since I got my Jive-remote.

For the record, the two RPMs are

Code:

  libexpat0-1.95.8-3mdk
  libexpat0-devel-1.95.8-3mdk

Now, its complaining about MySql, so more as I know more.

Thats a good start, but it doesn't seem to be sufficient.

I've pulled Checked out revision 13320. from SVN

the sandbox/slimserver/trunk/server/slimserver.pl
will not execute, complains

Code:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED] server# ./slimserver.pl

When I run the Bin/ # ./build-perl-modules.pl
it reports success (after repulling lots of stuff from CPAN)
but no files are placed in /usr/local/slimserver
and the trunk slimserver.pl still won't start.

Clearly I'm missing something.

[SlimDevices: Beta] Installing SC7 on Ubuntu

2007-10-03 Thread pfarrell

I have succeeded at getting SC7 installed on my Ubuntu laptop.
Its not trivial, so its worth writing down.

What didn't work: pointing repository at Slimserver latest unstable and
just installing using apt-get

Steps are:
1) use synaptic or apt-get to install
libexpat1-dev

2) check out the latest and greatest from svn
svn co http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/slim/trunk

3) configure the perl
./build-perl-modules.pl

4) execute slimserver.pl

[SlimDevices: Beta] keys for debian package verif

2007-10-16 Thread pfarrell

Installing the latest nightly, I noticed this message:

Code:

Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
  slimserver
Install these packages without verification [y/N]? y

I checked around and don't see a GPG key for signing the package.
Or at least couldn't find it.

Typically all you have to do is create a key pair and post the public
side, and then sign the package. The signing can be part of the
automatic build process.

Its not super important, but is generally considered a good thing and
might avoid some support questions.

Re: [SlimDevices: Beta] keys for debian package verif

2007-10-17 Thread pfarrell

Well, that the .deb isn't signed is nearly isomorphic with there not
being a key. To have meaningful signatures, you need to be able to
check the sig against what you get using the public key.

I ran Mandriva with RPMs back in the SS6 days. So I never would have
looked for Debian signatures.

I'm not following Snarly's comment about the value or lack thereof. For
clueless users, having the repository be verified is a good thing.

The build process can pull the code from SVN, make the package, and
sign it. No human touch needed.

All that is really verified is that the package came from Slim/Logi and
came from approved sources. Which means that a bad guy didn't copy the
.deb file, hack it with evil stuff, and then try to pass it off as a
genuine SqueezeCenter.

It also means that when the signatures fail, and the package installs
the evil "rm -rf /" malware, Slim/Logi can have plausible deniability.

[SlimDevices: Beta] debian SC 7 joy

For obscure reasons, I nuked my distribution install of Debian on the

It came up, works. No muss, no fuss.
Kicked off a scan and am listening to music.
SC 7.0 - 14930. Debian Etch 4.0

This is great.
