Re: [Bf-committers] Fake User for Brushes

2010-07-21 Thread Luke Frisken
Sound's good to me Jason! But seriously, the way the brush selection
works departs from the blender norm. You don't click on the texture
preview to select the the texture type. Same goes for materials. Not
to say that the new brush panel is worse, or a bad idea, but I also
think it would be good to better indicate the change. Perhaps a little
title above labeling it brush selector? Or perhaps you are right,
maybe a little naming might fix the problem ;)

The only other thing I can think to do is give the tools technical names and
rename the

Is the tool panel collapsed? (If not reload your default blend probably?)

The Brush panel has changed and the tool panel is collapsed by
default. I think there will be far fewer problems now.

Re: [Bf-committers] Fake User for Brushes

2010-07-21 Thread Doug Ollivier
This is a related but not identical note:

I've been teaching Blender a lot here in New Zealand, it's really picked
up in recent month. 80 or so students over the last few months.

Teaching Blender 2.5 takes about 66% of the time of teaching 2.49 which
is absolutely amazing. However, I still find it interesting to observe
students to see what goes wrong when they are left to their own devices.

Clicking the Brush button in the top of the textures panel seems to be
one of those things that goes wrong for about 10-20% of students.

From a User Interface perspective, a brush is already selectable in the
tool shelf of the 4 paint modes and will change the contents of the
texture panel, so having this button duplicated in the texture panel in
the editmode or object mode context seems to add a layer of confusion to
the Blender process of being in a Context > making a selection > and
seeing related options in Buttons Panel.

It would be interesting to observe a professional workflow to see if
people set up brush textures in any mode other than one of the four
paint modes? if not then I'd suggest the button could be removed.
Project Orange, Apricot, Peach, Durian and Persimmon project members
might be the best for a comment.

I'd also suggest that the outliner could add a new top level grouping
including a list of brushes, as they seem to be an indipendant entity
attached to the file as a whole rather than a specific object. This may
solve the cleaning up of brushes as it would allow instant selection and
deletion.

[Bf-committers] Path to integrating bmesh in trunk

2010-07-21 Thread joe
BMesh is nearing full completeness and stability, and I believe it can
be merged into trunk within one (at most two)
months. Since I've never had good success with posting testing builds
(as a way of getting serious user testing),
I'm going to get users to build/test it on IRC and hopefully have more
success at finding all the show-stopping
issues.

I'll try to post some developer docs in the wiki; there's a bunch of
comments in source/blender/bmesh/*.h and some
docs in bmesh/docs, but I need to consolidate and organize all the
information in a better way and fill in the gaps
still.

Once I have it fully ready, the merge itself will have to be scheduled
so it doesn't interfere with a release (there are
always issues that only show up in trunk, when many more users start
using the code in real projects, so there
needs to be enough time to work those out before any release). One
potential issue is mesh RNA; the current RNA
mesh API is going to change, and I'm going to write an RNA api
wrapping bmesh as well. It should be
possible to write a wrapper .py module that emulates the current API,
to avoid having to totally rewrite the current
set of mesh scripts.

Anyway, feel free to look over the branch and ask questions, I'll try
to be in IRC as much as possible. Questions will help me in making a
good set of dev documentation, that's clear about why things are the
way they are.

Brushes could work like text datablocks or scenes, the user count isnt
really used and you can manually delete...
or they could work like actions where a fake user is added by default.
adding access to the fake user setting should be trivial.

its correct that WM_FILESEL_FILEPATH isnt used.

[Bf-committers] [#22950] The width of a layout object does not propagate to its sub-layout objects (row, column, box, etc.)

2010-07-21 Thread Tamito KAJIYAMA
Hi,

As a follow-up of a commit into the Freestyle branch, I have just filed a bug
report #22950 to the Blender 2.5 bug tracker. The issue is that the width
of a layout object does not propagate to its sub-layout objects (row, column,
box, etc.), which makes the appearance of curve mapping template broken
when it is used with respect to a sub-layout object.

A patch to fix the issue is in the attachment of the bug report (also shown
in the commit log quoted below). A review of the patch by core developers
(and a better fix of the issue if possible) would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

I suggest you take a look at Blender 2.4X databrowser (Shift F4), it had a
way to manage fake users (f). In 2.5 you have to use the outliner in
databrowse mode bu its not as easy/fast

[Bf-committers] Fake User for Brushes

2010-07-21 Thread Jason Wilkins
Brushes all have an extra reference count that keeps them from getting
deleted even when there is no paint mode that references one of them. So it
is possible to unlink a brush from every paint mode and it will still be
saved in the .blend. This apparently isn't a problem and is the purpose of
the fake user, however there is no interface that will allow a user to
permanently delete this brush or relink it into a paint mode again. The
result is that if a user creates and deletes lots of brushes they will cruft
up the his saved files needlessly. When I was editing startup.blend I
created/deleted several brushes while creating a new set. I noticed this
problem and used the debugger to skip saving any brushes that were not in
use by any of the paint modes.

I'm assuming that the fake user acts as some sort of recycle bin so that
deleted objects can be retrieved so I think the main problem here is the
inability to recover brushes that have been unlinked. In fact, there is no
way to even, for example, link a brush used in texture paint into vertex
paint or something like that. (I may be wrong, before I changed it, the
same Draw brush was linked into 3 different paint modes, but as far as I can
tell I do not know how that was done).

2010-07-21 Thread Ton Roosendaal
Hi,

That's totally cool! All the main builds are in now. There is still
about a couple of hours work for me to have the release complete,
which I'll do in the morning. In the mean time the mirrors will rsync
overnight too.

Thanks,

Continuing with that - Windows builds are on the server.

And to ensure I have many replies on my own messages, to the builders:

you do export from the tag, right? :) (and not just lazily update from a
trunk checkout you have already).

2010-07-21 Thread Ton Roosendaal
Hi all,

We now do an official attempt to build the binaries.
SVN is being tagged, you need r30579 for the builds.

As usual put the binaries online, or tell me where to get them.

Thanks!

Re: [Bf-committers] Blender 2.53 beta AHOY!

2010-07-21 Thread Alberto Torres
Can you please fix this really annoying regression before release?
https://projects.blender.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=22870&group_id=9&atid=498

(First paragraph only, the second one is more like a feature request)

This bug is not present in the last alpha (it was introduced a month
ago I think) and is really annoying doing texture work. It should be
an easy fix.

can you please fix this in trunk too so that this goes in beta 3?
