Are you meaning to ask what switches dig requires to
return txt records that include a term such as spf?

This seems to ring a bell with me, have you asked this
before?

Re: NAMED LOGS

2013-07-23 Thread Ian Manners
Hi Carl,

There seems to be a common idea in many educational institutions that
sending unwanted traffic in the name of research is ok.

Which is why I have so many educational institutions
are blacklisted in my firewall.. I nolonger report abuse,
I simply add to the BL permanently now.

2 are whitelisted because they asked nicely, and they have
something I want so its a mutual thing.

There are a lot of others such as Anti-virus online scanners
that check websites before the 'client' lands on the page,
and pen testing companys that also think its fine to sling crp
at anyones server for testing, or checking, with no hint of
asking before doing so. Same basket as all the bots that
read robots.txt then ignore it, because they can.

This is becoming a bigger issue for many at present,
especially when people like myself have limited bandwidth,
though I check logs as well I nolonger investigate to much,
I simply update the relevant conf file.

Re: Could DNS help solve this?

2010-11-11 Thread Ian Manners
Hi Sten,

Yes, I do use whois, my problem is which of the many dozens of whois
servers to ask.

Apologies, sometimes I can be a bit short in my answers.

 http://www.linux.it/~md/software/

The whois command line utility I pointed you to comes with
a lot of Linux distro's, and it trys a variety of domain information
sources to return the whois information in a domain or IP address.
ie, its does what you want.

E.g. if you want to know who owns telephone.com(random example), do you
ask whois.moniker.com, whois.markmonitor.com, whois.enum.com or ???.

the 'whois' commandline utility tells me Registrar, Admin contact, Tech
contact,
DNS servers, Domain Status etc.

Re: Could DNS help solve this?

2010-11-10 Thread Ian Manners
Hi Sten,

With the growing number of registrars of e.g. .com domains, it becomes
difficult or even almost impossible to figure out which whois server you
should ask for information about a domain name.

Use Whois (first under the 'Other software:' heading) from
the command prompt.

Even compiles ok under OS/2.

Re: out of place mx records.

2010-10-27 Thread Ian Manners
Hi Gregory,

mail02 IN A 192.168.xx.xx
   IN MX 10 mcvpemr01
   IN MX 10 mcvpemr02
nelson IN A 202.xx.xx.1
   IN MX 10 mcvpemr01
   IN MX 10 mcvpemr02

My question is why would INMX10mcvpemr01 and INMX
10mcvpemr02 be repeated trough the zone file surely this is
redundant ?

It looks like an old way of specifying the MX for each subdomain.

Re: Views

2010-10-23 Thread Ian Manners
Hi Sebastian,

I couldn't find anywhere and wonder if it is possible to use diffrent views
at diffrent times i.e.:

I used CRON and some command files to do that a few years ago
when I wasnt going to be around but a client was moving servers.

Also depends on just how big your named.conf file is as well as
your traffic level re impact from hups.
