I believe that, when using, +trace, the server mentioned as an
argument for @, is used only for bootstrapping (getting the answer to
the query NS .) After that, dig asks the default resolver for the
addresses of name servers. (You can check with tcpdump.)
 
If I'm right, your best solution would be to set up a resolver which
uses your root and to direct name resolution at it.

pure hello should be just enough.

 correspondence when one isn't sure who will be reading what was sent.
 While it is certainly not usual to do it for an email (especially to a
 list like this) I see no reason to chide someone for doing it.

What about irony? Hello is shorter, simpler and more common on the net,
expecially in mailing lists...
