OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE JUN 21 2004 AT 8:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The week leading up to the summer solstice was again pretty much
status quo for bird reports for this time of year.

A highlight was a GREAT EGRET, first reported from the Bruce Pit
on Cedarview Rd. on the evening of June 16, and then another
report of likely the same bird on Mud Lake in Britannia on the
morning of the 17th. There were no subsequent reports of this
bird so it may have left; it appeared quite restless while in the
Britannia location, relocating several times from the pond to the
river and back again on the 17th.

Two species that have been declining locally were reported this
past week. Three Upland Sandpipers, the 1st report of the year,
were found on Conley Rd. between the towns of Richmond and Munster
on June 18th, and Common Nighthawks were heard downtown near
Constitution Square during the past few evenings.

Breeding birds that continue to expand in urban Ottawa were also
noteworthy. A pair of Common Ravens fledged four young from a nest
on a communication tower east of Russell Rd. and a Merlin nest in
Alta Vista has four active young as of the 18th.

At least 2 singing Golden-winged Warblers (one of them singing a
Blue-winged song) were again found along the railroad tracks
approximately 1 km. east of the trestle over Huntmar Dr. on the
18th, along with a Black-billed Cuckoo and the other regular
breeders in this habitat.

And from farther afield a couple of interesting sightings were of
a Trumpeter Swan and 4 Black Terns in a marsh in the Limerick
Forest near Merrickville on June 20th.

Thank you - Good Birding!

[Ontbirds]Least Sandpiper - Hamilton Harbour - First fall migrant?

2004-06-22 Thread Mike Boyd
Dear Fellow Birders,

Did some birding along Hamilton Harbour yesterday and turned up what might be
the first fall migrant of the year (and summer only just got here!), which was
a Least Sandpiper at the tollgate ponds. Not too much was out of the ordinary
in the area, the only other good bird was a Greater Scaup at the CCIW.

Directions: Exit the QEW Niagara at Eastport Drive. At the first stop lights
turn right and another immediate right onto a dirt road and the CCIW is here,
the scaup was out amongst the islands. To reach the tollgate ponds continue
along Eastport drive for another couple of km’s as it weaves under the QEW and
they will be on your right hand side as you approach the industrial area.

Dear Fellow Birders,

Checked out the Beverly Swamp this morning and didn’t get to see as much of it
as I would have liked as the mosquitos are killer there. But a few good birds
were had, the best being a Canada Warbler carrying food. Also in abundance were
Northern Waterthrush, Veery, Mourning Warbler, Least Flycatchers, and a family
of ~10 Ruffed Grouse. Also went and saw the Peregrine Falcons in downtown
Hamilton and they look like the first should be ready to fledge tomorrow
morning.

Directions: Exit the 403 Hamilton at Hwy 6 north and continue until Flamborough
Conc.8 W. and follow this along until it becomes a dirt road. All of the birds
were seen along this road. For the Peregrines follow the 403 into Hamilton exit
at Main St and follow this east until Bay St turn left and they are at the
corner of Bay and King St.

[Ontbirds]American Avocet at Hamilton

2004-06-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Late this afternoon I went to the Tollgate Ponds in Hamilton to look for any
early fall-migrant shorebirds. But only a single individual was present -- an
American Avocet in gorgeous breeding plumage. The bird was sleeping, so I
could not determine the sex of the bird.

The bird was in the same pond that had the Wilson's Plover.

An American Avocet found by Barry Jones this afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
continues to be seen in the same location as the Wilson's Plover was at
Tollgate Ponds off of Eastport Drive in Hamilton at 6:00 p.m..

Good birding,
Cheryl Edgecombe

Directions from Toronto:

Take QEW to QEW Niagara. At the exit to QEW Niagara you will see a sign for
Eastport Drive. Get onto Eastport Drive and it will wind its way around and
over the Burlington Lift Bridge. Continue to follow Eastport Drive past the
first Tollgate Pond (large square pond on right) and just east of this there
will be a muddy area where they are filling in the pond that was there. The
bird is running around on the mud in this area. Good views with a scope but
can be seen with binoculars.

Directions from Niagara:

Take QEW Niagara to Centennial Drive. Get off at Centennial and go north to
lake. Turn left at the lights and follow Van Wagners Beach Road past
Hutch's Restaurant to a set of lights. At the lights, turn left (Beach
Blvd) and follow to Eastport Drive . You will see signs for Eastport Drive,
it is a right turn not too long after you get on Beach. Continue along
Eastport Drive. The muddy area which it is located on the left just before
the large square pond.
