[Ontbirds]Ivory Gull
Karl Overman and I saw the Ivory Gull at the SW corner of Hillman Marsh around 2:30 today. It flew off to the east, and we couldn't relocate it. On Sunday 8 January, Chip and Linda Weseloh, Laurie Hill and I covered the Presqu'ile section of the Mid-winter Waterfowl Survey. Most of what we saw was expected but we were quite amazed at the Mute Swan total with fully 100 more than on the Christmas Count a few weeks ago. The grand total for Mute Swan was 420!!. Other birds off interest included 10 Tundra Swan, 4 Lesser Scaup, 2 Am. Coot, 1 Snowy Owl. Most of the waterfowl, including the coots, were at the open lead between Weller's Bay and Lake Ontario at Barcovan. The owl was sitting on ice off the government dock at Presqu'ile (which, as Fred Helleiner pointed out, is now closed for the week to accommodate the deer cull). Cheers, Doug McRae Doug McRae P.O. [Ontbirds]Ivory Gull - dip
Hi All Well I totally dipped on the Ivory Gull today. I arrived at Hillman at 2:45 and left at 4 and I didn't see it and didn't meet any birders who had either. Many were looking. Two adult Bald Eagles were in the marsh along with thousands and thousands of gulls. More gulls than I have ever seen in one place. If anyone has a count idea I would be interested in knowing. Just south of Concession B (which is just south of Hillman) a lone adult male Harrier was cruising along over the fields. In Port Alma, despite rumours of their relocation, I saw 2 Wild Turkeys begging at someone's doorstep. Port Alma is located along the Talbot Trail between Wheatley and Blenheim. Good birding and good luck to those who try tomorrow! Ellen Smout London, Ontario __ Yahoo! DSL Something to write home about. Just $16.99/mo. or less. dsl.yahoo.com

[Ontbirds]Yellow-headed Blackbird east of Ottawa
Happy New Year Ontbirders There is an adult male Yellow-headed Blackbird coming to the property of #23 Manitou Street in the community of Forest Park, south of Limoges. This area is within the "Ottawa 50K District". The bird is in basic/winter plumage, looking just like a breeding adult except for having a darker crown and nape. While there this afternoon, I also saw a Common Grackle, 2 Red-winged Blackbirds and a Boreal Chickadee! I've been advised by the property owner that, for the past week and a half, the YHBL has loosely followed a routine of coming into the feeding station in the morning, then again in late afternoon. It appears to associate with a group of European Starlings. But, sometimes comes to the feeder alone. It often perches on top of a tall deciduous tree in the back yard. Forest Park is a relatively new community of 4 long, dead-end streets, bordering on a large woodlot next to the Castor River. The homes have relatively open properties with large yards. There are many feeders in the area, so there is plenty to check. However, late this afternoon it spent a good deal of time at the feeder in the back of #23. Directions from Ottawa: East on Hwy 417 to Exit #79 (Hwy #5, Limoges Road). Turn right (south) on Limoges Road to Route 500 (there is a Petro Canada Station at this corner). Turn left (east) on Route 500 past Cambridge School. Continue to the 4th street past the school. This is Manitou Street - turn right here and park on the road in front of #23. Please respect the property owners wishes and do NOT clog the laneway. And, do not go beyond the trailer at the side of the house. This is probably your best view point anyway. NOTE regarding [Ontbirds]Ottawa/Gatineau 08Jan06... Hoary Redpoll, Northern Hawk Owl
Hello Ontbirders, Due to a wee "ghost in the machine" of Gordon Pringle, the most recent transcript of the Ottawa-Gatineau bird sightings summary (below) isNOT the "most recent" summary, but in fact one that was posted on 29 February 2004! Interesting that many of the birds on this old message are not dissimilar to those on the REAL 06 January 2006 summary.which will be posted ASAP when the wires get uncrossed. Apologies and please stand by for the updated information. [Ontbirds]Ivory Gull - Hillman Marsh
Hello again. I just wanted to let everyone know that the Ivory Gull is still present at Hillman Marsh - I just got back from seeing it (at 1:45 pm). It was hanging around the bridge by the "two churches", right by the main entrance to the conservation area. The bird was working on the south side of the bridge and came in very close. Good birding everyone! [Ontbirds]Few finches in Algonquin
Sunday Janet Grand and I made the trek to Algonquin - beautiful fresh snow on the trees, but birds were sparse. Only finches seen were a flock of PINE GROSBEAKS at the Park Visitor Centre. A PINE MARTEN that has been coming to the feeders behind the Visitor Centre returned about 2:30 pm, shortly after the photographers ran out of patience. One BOREAL CHICKADEE at the gate on Opeongo Road. None seen at Spruce Boardwalk, but another Marten near the trail entrance. No sign of Spruce Grouse. As if to brighten a wintry January day, a male Red-winged Blackbird was at our feeder in Overbrook (Queen Mary Street) today (9 January) at noon. Sunflower & black nijer seed was all that was on the menu. Good winter listing! [Ontbirds]Ivory Gull still at Hillman
At 0800 this morning Jan. 09/06 the Ivory Gull that was first found by Adam and Rosalie Hall was still at the same location. It was still at the 1st. bridge overlooking the North end of Hillman Marsh (the second bridge is closest to Lake Erie). The Bird was continuously feeding away and alone from the Ring-bill Gulls and Herring Gulls that were out further in the deeper water. It was feeding on a dead carp near a log on the south side of the road immediately before the bridge. [Ontbirds]Ivory Gull photos...
I've posted a fantastic image of the Ivory Gull photographed by Rosalee Hall at www.stevepike.com click on the blue "rarities" hyperlink on the homepage. And in my hast to post the updated directions and location information, I stated the Ivory gull was number 282 in the Point Pelee Birding area...it's actually supposed to be 382! And there are actually 3 Gannet records now not 2 and last years Bird was a Fall migrant on November 11th. Thanks and ENJOY!! Steve!
