Weather:
Morning started out completely overcast and quite cool-wind was out of the
north. Around 11:15, the sun came out, there were patches of blue and the
birds just kept on comin! The winds shifted to the south around 2pm, the
clouds came back even heavier, and the flight stopped cold! A dark cloud
bank rolled in around 3:15 that looked like snow clouds. By the time it
reached the tower, we were in almost-twilight!

Raptor Observations:
the majority of birds came thru in 4 kettles spaced throughout the few hrs
of semi-cloudy conditions. The lone GE was an adult.

Non-raptor Observations:
3 sandhill cranes flew over at 11:45. They were later seen at SMRR. A
bizarre-looking crow flew over(surprisingly) that was missing most of his
secondaries, and half of his primaries. We kept wondering how he was able
to NOT move in perpetual circles! We also had a tailless TV

Predictions:
could be very good, esp with NE winds. There has got to be some RL's some
way, some day!

[Ontbirds]Ottawa/Gatineau summary re: loon numbers

2006-11-14 Thread Christina Lewis
Greetings Ontbirds people,

An amendment to the summary posted yesterday re: the "loon fallout" in
Ottawa on 13 November:

In addition to the 178 Red-throated Loons reported in the summary from the
Ottawa River, 44 were seen on the river at Dick Bell Park earlier in the
morning and subsequently flew south, thus bringing yesterday's total up to
222 birds!

Ontbirds readers will have noted that 104 Red-throated Loons were reported
today 14 November between Dick Bell Park and Constance Bay.

Thanks to Tony Beck and Bruce DiLabio for posting their counts of these
numbers to Ontbirds.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds]Tundra Swans in Kingston, ON

2006-11-14 Thread P. Hauschildt

Hi All,
On our way home from work today, we spotted approximately 12 Swans in
Elevator Bay between the Dupont Plant and a row of townhouses known
as Commodore's Cove along Front Road in Kingston. The light was
rapidly fading but we still managed to get a good look at them with
our binoculars and are fairly certain that these are Tundra Swans
based on the shape of their necks and the shape and colour of their
beaks. There were at least three immature Tundra Swans in amongst
the adults.

With the grey sky (it was drizzling) and water and the fading light,
these large, stark-white birds looked quite resplendent as they
gracefully floated about the bay.

Cheers,
Peg Hauschildt
Kingston, ON
Directions:
Take the 611 turn-off on the 401 at the west end of Kingston and turn
south. Drive down Gardiner's Road until you reach a major
intersection with Bath Road (an A&P store is at this
intersection). Turn right onto Bath Road then immediately turn left
at the next traffic light onto Days Road. Follow Days Road to the
very end and turn left onto Front Road at the traffic light (an auto
repair shop is at this intersection). Elevator Bay is on your
right-hand side immediately after the second set of traffic lights
that turn into the Dupont Plant.

Weather:
Overcast conditions early gave way to some brighter breaks, if not quite
full sunshine, at midday. Much of the day overall saw an alternating
series of cloudy and less cloudy intervals. Winds were light for the most
part and variable.

Raptor Observations:
After a very slow start, the brightness at midday sparked a very good
movement of birds dominated by Red-tailed Hawks as well a small push of
TVs along with a smattering of other species. A partially albino Red-tail
highlighted the passage. This activity tapered off quickly in the
afternoon once heavier clouds moved into the area again.

Non-raptor Observations:
Three Sandhill Cranes were noted in migration. Also, a singing American
Tree Sparrow added a bit of cheeriness to a mid-November day.

Weather:
The day started out overcast to the north but with blue skies over Hawk
Cliff. Clud began to move in by mid-morning and then broke back out a bit
by early afternoon. Winds were variable and never more than
light...eventually seeming to settle in from the S. Temp got to a high of
12C.

Raptor Observations:
Another nice fligth today with a total of 556 birds. A good count for
Redtails with 451 with some nice kettles that included many Red-shoulders
as well with 42. Just 3 more Roughlegs (all Light morph) and another 5
Golden Eagles...on of which was an adult bird that crossed over right
above us not more than 30-40m up!!

Non-raptor Observations:
Noted 3 Tundra Swans and several flights of Eastern Bluebirds. A very large
flight of crows eastward in somewhat of a reverse migration.

Predictions:
Wednesday could be really good with higher pressure moving in and possible
light NE and E winds. I would expect another good Redtail flight if the
skies open up with some sunshine.

[Ontbirds]gulls, geese and cranes - Ottawa

2006-11-14 Thread Tony Beck

Hello Ontbirders

Thanks to big trucks and continuous drizzle, roadside birding was a
soggy endeavour this afternoon.
Regardless, several birds were close enough to the road to observe
reasonably well.

The most productive spot was at the corner of Brophy and Moodie, in
particular the northeast field.
Present here were 2 Cackling Geese, 1 Greater White-fronted Goose, 1
first winter Iceland Gull and 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls including 4
winter adults and 1 first winter.
There was 1 Cackling Goose in a corn field on the north side of
Bankfield, east of Hwy 416, very near the intersection with Hwy 73.
Directions courtesy Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/stony7.htm

There was 1 more Cackling Goose along Rideau Road between Spratt and
Limebank.
Directions taken (in part) from Neily World: From Highway 417 (The
Queensway) take exit 121A (Bronson Avenue). Go SSE on Bronson for 3.6
km, crossing the Rideau River on the Dunbar Bridge and going over
Riverside Drive, before bearing right to take the Brookfield Road exit.
In 0.1 km merge right onto Brookfield Road and drive 0.5 km to
Riverside Drive. Turn left onto Riverside Drive and go 5.9 km to
Limebank Road on the left. Turn left or SSE onto Limebank and drive 0.8
km to Tom Roberts Avenue. Continue along Limebank Road, past Leitrim,
past Earl Armstrong, all the way to Rideau Road and turn right (west).

At 2:30 pm, all 74 Sandhill Cranes were together in the plowed field
west of Milton Road, south of Smith.
Directions courtesy Neily World:
http://ca.geocities.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/merblu8.htm

By 3:20 pm many geese had already accumulated at the Quarry Ponds off
Moodie Drive with many more arriving. A quick scan produced 11 Ruddy
Ducks, and 8 Snow Geese (likely 2 families - 3 Greater with 1 juvenile
& 5 Lesser Blue with 3 juveniles).
Directions courtesy Neily World:

Last night at 21:10 my daughter, Georgia, pointed out a Snowy Owl
sitting along the west side of the QEW and the 4th Line overpass in
Oakville. The bird sat quietly 10 m from 4th Line as we passed by on
three separate occasions.

Drive along the QEW and get off at 3rd Line. Turn east along the North
Service Road and continue along until you reachn4th Line. Turn right to
go over the overpass and the owl was on the west side of the road.

Hi Everyone
The visibility was good between showers this morning and I was able to
count 92 Red-throated Loons between Dick Bell Park and Shirley's Bay. There
were 3 distinct flocks and a small number of individual birds. Most birds
appeared to be adults in winter plumage while 4 of the lone birds were
juvenile plumaged. There were still a good number of Common Loons 70+ and at
Constance Bay I observed another flock of 12 adult winter plumage
Red-throated Loons off 774 Bayview Drive. If you require additional
information, please email me privately.
