[Ontbirds]White-winged Dove - St. Catharines YES
Fellow Ontbirders, The White-winged Dove in St. Catharines was seen this afternoon by Joan Taylor, Ian Platt, and myself at 4:15 pm this afternoon (Oct. 13). Thanks to Kayo Roy for his advice on looking for this bird. He says the best time is between 4 and 6 pm when it comes in to feed on the seed placed on the backyard deck at 4 Mississauga Rd. The area can be viewed from the backyard gate at the left side of the house. If you are vertically challenged, you may get a better view if you bring a stepping stool along. Directions from the west: >From the QEW, take the Ontario Street exit in St. Catharines and go north on Ontario Street. Ontario Street becomes Lakeshore Rd. and curves to the right. Turn left at Vine Street. Continue north to the first street on your left, Old Coach Road. Turn left here and go two streets on your right to Mississauga Road. Turn right, the bird visits house #4 on the right. Gord Payne London, ON [EMAIL PROTECTED] * Dr. R. [Ontbirds]Whimbrels in Port Burwell
13 October 2008 Port Burwell, ON Today, two Whimbrels were seen foraging in the grass flats on the west side of Big Otter Creek in Port Burwell. One of these two is slightly crippled in one leg, and must be the sane one reported on September 22nd last. One of the two flushed and flew southwards towards the lake. Based on previous observation, it is likely to return to the other one. Sincerely, Joe Stephenson Directions: Port Burwell is at the southern terminus of Hwy 19 (Plank Road) south of Tillsonburg, ON. The harbour area is easy to locate in this small town. There is a municipal beach on the east side of the harbour. On the west side there also is a public parking area near the harbour mouth which is near where the Whimbrels were seen today. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds]Golden Eagle, Heidelberg
Hey Birders, Not quite a Frigatebird, but a good yard bird (#150) nonetheless. We had a juvenile Golden Eagle minutes ago passing overhead in a WSW direction at our home, north-west of Waterloo. Surprisingly there are only a handful of records for Waterloo region (6 records. Also, first thing this morning at least 4 Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows near the Willow's in Dundas at the same location as Tom Thomas's report yesterday. Good Birding and Happy Thanksgiving, Mike and Ken Burrell Heidelberg, Ont [EMAIL PROTECTED] Directions - Heidelberg: take highway 85 north through Waterloo, exiting at King Street going to St. Jacobs. [Ontbirds]Curlew Sandpiper, Fort Erie
We observed the juvenile Curlew Sandpiper this morning at about 10:30 (Oct. 13). It was foraging alongside 2 Dunlin. Also some Greater Yellowlegs a bit further along the shore. Directions: Follow the QEW towards Buffalo,USA. Take the Central Ave Exit as it is the final exit before the USA. Then you want to take a right on Central Ave, then a right onto Lakeshore Rd. When your driving along Lakeshore Rd. you will pass the Old Fort Erie historic site on the right. Just a little past this point on the left you will see a rocky shoreline and this is where the Curlew Sandpiper is being seen. Parking is tight on Lakeshore Rd, so parking on the sideroads is suggested (Adelaide). [Ontbirds]Ottawa - Long-billed Dowitcher, etc.
Happy Thanksgiving Ontbirders This morning, at the Burnside Quarry Ponds, we had a juvenile Long- billed Dowitcher. Other shorebirds included 3 Greater Yellowlegs, 5 Dunlin and a Sanderling. Just before leaving, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull came in with some Herring Gulls. And, an immature Bald Eagle (probable 2nd year - speckled belly, white crown) perched in the distance. Important Note: Contrary to previous information, although today is a holiday, and there is no quarry-work-activity in progress, security advises that people must still stay outside of the fence line. Note also that hunters are active in the adjacent farm field and cedar woodlot. [Ontbirds]White-winged Dove - St. Catharines - YES
The White-winged Dove in St. Catharines was seen several times yesterday, October 12, 2008. Quite a few birders including several from Scarborough, and New York State had good looks at this bird that has been present in a residential backyard since the 21st of July. This observation becomes a new species addition to the Buffalo Ornithological Society Annual October Count held yesterday. There has been criticism from some quarters about the excessive continuing reporting on Ontbirds of lingering rare birds especially during the time of the Niagara Falls Rufous Hummingbird. I received a number of e-mails at the time making this point very clear. Just the opposite occurred this past weekend. My apologies to Andrew Keaveney and any others who were not aware of this birds continued presence. Perhaps I should have reported it on a more regular basis. Directions: >From the QEW, take the Niagara Street exit in St. Catharines and go north on >Niagara Street. Immediately over the QE Highway at the first lights, the road >forks with Vine Street going to the left, and Niagara Street to the right, >with a Sunoco gas station in the middle of this fork. Take a left here onto >Vine Street and at 4.1 km you will be at the lights at Lakeshore Road. >Continue north through the lights another 2/10ths of a km to the first street >on your left, Old Coach Road. Turn left here and go two streets on your right >to Mississauga Road, house #4.
