[Ontbirds] Yellow-bellied flycatcher Merrickville, eastern Ontario

2009-05-31 Thread SLIMBIRD Gerard
It's nice (and lucky) to catch a hard-to-get migrant/yard bird making it's
way through the landscape away from the usual migrant "hot spots." A
Yellow-bellied Fly was first heard calling, and than seen well in our yard
this evening around 6:30pm 5/31/09 here in Merrickville to the SW of Ottawa.

Good birding,

Gerard Phillips and Brenda Carter

[Ontbirds] Ottawa - Arctic Terns today, Willet last reported yesterday

2009-05-31 Thread Christina Lewis
Hello Ontbirds people,

Today (31 May), between 1:10 and 1:30 pm Bob Bracken, Mike Tate and I observed
2 ARCTIC TERNS flying over the Deschenes rapids of the Ottawa River. The birds
were distant but we were able to get good views with scopes, from "Britannia
Point" (the public boat launch near the Britannia water purification plant).
Also present were 100's of Ring-billed Gulls, a few Bonaparte's Gulls, many
Chimney Swifts and at least 3 spp. of swallows, all hawking for insects - a
large emergence of Ephemeroptera (a.k.a. Mayflies) has been occuring on the
river over the past few days.

The WILLET discovered at the Embrun sewage lagoons on 29 May was still present
yesterday (30 May). No more recent reports of this local rarity have come in
yet, however lots of shorebirds were found in vartious locations both east &
west of Ottawa over the past week (a total of 17 spp. reported just in the past
3 days!) and the mix has changed on a daily basis as they drop in & move on.

Great stuff in not so great weather...but that's what brings the great birds!

DIRECTIONS (from downtown Ottawa):

"Britannia Point" - Take Hwy 417 west to exit #129 (Pinecrest / Greenbank Rds.)
then go north on Pinecrest to Richmond Rd. Right (east) on Richmond to Carling
Ave. Right on Carling and take the 1st left onto Poulin Ave. Follow Poulin to
Britannia Rd.. Right (north) on Britannia to where it ends at Cassels St. Go
right (east) on Cassels and take this road right to the very end; park at the
gravel area near the public boat launch beside the filtration plant fence.

Embrun sewage lagoons - Take Hwy 417 east to exit #79 (Crysler / Limoges) then
go south on County Rd. #5 to Rte 400 south of the bridge over the Castor River.
Right (west) on Rte 400 and look for the lone White Pine (a "landmark" for the
lagoons). PLEASE EXERCISE DISCRETION WHEN ENTERING THESE LAGOONS. The property
is posted "No Trespassing" but the management has so far been cooperative as
long as people are respectful.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl Hwy 10 near Dundalk

2009-05-31 Thread lance allin

Good Morning Birders,

Sorry about the late posting .

Last evening around 6 pm I saw the Snowy Owl a the field approximately 100
m west of Hwy 10 North, just past Dufferin Rd 21 and about 5 km south of
the Dundalk intersection. It was sitting in some tall grass but then flew
up to a pole just slightly north of its original spot.

Thanks to Alfred Raab for his posting on May 28.

Be safe and take care,
Faye Allin

[Ontbirds] 60 Red Knots-Kaiser Wildlife Wetland

2009-05-31 Thread George Bryant
At 12 noon, there were 60 Red Knots in superb breeding finery, plus 1 Ruddy
Turnstone, 200 Black-bellied Plover, 40 Semi Sandpiper, 20 Least Sandpiper,
1 Killdeer, 10 Bonaparte's Gulls at this Hillman Marsh-like wetland.

Managed under the Wildlife Partners Program, Kaiser Crossroad wetland is 20
kms. east of Picton linking County Roads 7 & 8 on bucolic Pleasant Point
peninsula. Excellent for waterfowl as well, the wetland is much more
accessible and perhaps more species-rich than Sanctuary Pond, Amherst
Island.

At nearby Cape Vesey there is a large colony! of Rough-winged Swallows, plus
nesting Northern Raven and Osprey.
