[Ontbirds] Port Stanley gulls - NO Black-tailed Gull
Hello, I'm not sure if anyone has given the Black-tailed Gull a really good try recently. My Dad and I spent 3 hours at Port Stanley this afternoon watching the harbour for it. No luck. Only one fishing boat came in, but there were lots of gulls. Birds seen included: 4 Glaucous Gulls, 1 Iceland Gull, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 5100 Herring Gulls, 50 Great Black-backed Gulls, 100 Ring-billed Gulls, 1 Killdeer, 5 Eastern Bluebirds, and 1 Hermit Thrush (the latter two nearby). [Ontbirds] Iceland, Glaucous Gulls in Sarnia
This morning, in Sarnia, at Sarnia Bay, 8:00, one immature Iceland Gull floating with the numerous Herring, Ring-billed, Great Black-backed Gulls. Previous day, I saw 3 Glaucous Gulls (2 adults, 1 imm.) in the same place. Many more gulls are hidden from view by the marina's docks as there is practically no ice yet for the birds to loaf on in the open. Sarnia Bay (St-Clair River): in Sarnia, London Road all the way west to Front Street, on Front Street, there are parking lots facing the St-Clair River. A walkway follows the waterfront. [Ontbirds] 2009/10 Ontario Winter List
First of all, a big thanks to everyone who e-mailed me personally over the last week or so to fill in some of the blanks on the 2009/10 Ontario Winter List. We are getting closer to our average for the last 2 years by this time of the season. We now have all the expected species of waterfowl, raptors, woodpeckers and wrens. We have all the owls except Boreal and all the finches except Hoary Redpoll. The Rondeau CBC just reported in with Virginia Rail and Wilson's Snipe, so those will be added to the update next week. Other regular species not reported to date are: Spruce Grouse; Eared Grebe; Mew and Sabine's Gull; Eastern Phoebe; Black-bill Magpie; Brewer's Blackbird; and Baltimore Oriole. Hopefully some of the upcoming CBC's will produce a few surprise sparrows or warblers to help round out the list. Here is the link again so you can see where we are to date: http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/maybank/other/onwinter.htm You will want to log in just to see Dian Bogie's picture of Mr. P. Good birding. [Ontbirds] Newmarket/Keswick Area Sightings
Over the past two weeks there have been some "good" birds in the Newmarket area. Mike Van den Tillaart had a Belted Kingfisher along the Holland River trail on Dec. 7, Linda Hollinshead had a very vocal Northern Shrike along Morning Sdrd. this past Saturday, and I had a Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Kestrel, and male Northern Harrier in the Holland Marsh yesterday afternoon. Keith Dunn had some noteworthy birds last week in the Keswick area: a Merlin, two Pileated Woodpeckers, and an adult Bald Eagle. All of these were seen along Lake Drive. Snowy Owls continue to be observed locally but questionable behaviour on the part of some owl seekers has prompted requests from a few local birders to keep specific directions off the net for awhile.
