[Ontbirds] Humber Arboretum: Thrushes, Orange Crowned Warblers, Purple Finches, and more...

2010-10-12 Thread Bernie Monette
Greetings!

It was a nice day today at the Arboretum. In the valley there were some
Orange Crowned Warblers along with a very cooperative Mockingbird.

The usual White Throated and White Crowned Sparrows and a lone Fox Sparrow
were also present.

By the feeders were many Purple Finches, House Finches, Juncos, and a pair
of Blue Jays.

In the pines were a flock of Thrushes: perhaps a Grey Cheeked.

The Arboretum is behind Humber College at Finch and Humber College Blvd.

Go to the 427 and Finch: head east to Humber College Blvd and turn right.

Enter the College and by the main parking office you can get a permit to
park by the Arboretum. There are four parking spots by the Arboretum but
they are often full.

Cheers,

Bernie

[Ontbirds] Port Stanley Lagoons

2010-10-12 Thread E. Smout
Hi All

Not sure if this is of note or not, but I counted over 125 Killdeer at Lagoons
1 & 2 in Port Stanley on Sunday.  Most of them were loafing and sunning on the
berm between the 1st & 2nd lagoons but a few were at the waters edge.

There were also a few Yellowlegs, both Lesser and Greater.

Lots of late Monarchs migrating as well.

Good Birding

Visitors:
about a dozen birders and hawk watchers showed up throughout the day.

Weather:
Fall has set in, but the sky remained sunny. It was even a bit chilly if
you weren't in the sun. Winds stayed consistent throughout the day out of
the south east.

Raptor Observations:
A very exciting day, non-stop action till about 4:30pm (EDST). First thing
in the morning, a large kettle of Turkey Vultures numbering over a
thousand, came by over the smoke stacks. Many more came over throughout the
day, while buteos finally made some strong movements. We had 73 Red-tailed
Hawks and 31 Red-shouldered Hawks. A juvie Golden Eagle flew in from Canada
and gave us a quick chance to look at it.

Non-raptor Observations:
Too busy with raptors, but I did see a female Mallard get swallowed from
beneath by what can only be a large snapping turtle.

Predictions:
Tomorrow we should have a strong early push, an afternoon storm is supposed
to come through and might shut the count down. It's hard to say, Monday was
supposed to be the same, but it was sunny all day.

Weather:
Partly cloudy with a high of 21C. Winds were N in the morning switching to
light SW in the afternoon.

Raptor Observations:
A good showing of Red-tails, Red-shouldereds, Sharp-shins, and Cooper's in
the morning on the N winds. There was a brief lull in the afternoon once
the wind switched to SW, although several large kettles of Turkey Vultures
continued to move through out over the treeline NE of the tower. Perhaps
the last Broad-winged Hawks of the season went by within a few mixed Buteo
kettles in the morning. The two local juv. Ospreys along with 3 of the
local juv. Bald Eagles put on a good show as well.

Non-raptor Observations:
The first major moving day of the season for Am. Crows with 1,517 tallied.
Blue Jays still on the move with 5,002 tallied mostly in the early morning
hours. Also notable were 95 Rusty Blackbirds, Hairy Woodpecker, Tufted
Titmouse, the Greater Yellowlegs (Day 8), and 40+ Bonaparte's Gulls out
over the lake.

Predictions:
Cloudy with a 30% chance of showers in the afternoon. High 17. Wind SSW 5-8
km/hr. If the rain holds, raptors should be on the move, although the
south winds might keep things slow.

[Ontbirds] 2nd Gr. White-fronted Goose at Pittock Lake, Oct 12.

2010-10-12 Thread JAMES HOLDSWORTH
Ontbirders,

A second adult GWF Goose has joined the previously reported bird, along the
north shore of the lake, on a gravel shoal in the west end. The 1st bird has
been seen, sporadically, at the lake and feeding in the cornfields just north
of
the park, over the past weekend.

The large numbers of Canada Geese tend to ebb and flow throughout the day at
Pittock, spending large parts of the day feeding in adjacent fields. The GWF
Geese are likely to follow that same routine. Early morning and evening would
be
your best best to see them at the lake.

Of note, along the south shore of the lake, were large numbers of migrant
birds,
mostly sparrows and kinglets. 7 Orange-crowned Warblers fed together in the
goldenrod along the trail edge. Many raptors were moving early along the north
side of the lake, with the 1st [sizable] local movement of Red-tailed Hawk
noted. I'm sure the Lake Erie hawk watches had a wonderful day.

Directions - To reach Pittock Lake from the 401, take the Mill Street exit
north
to Dundas, east to Vansittart Avenue and then east on Devonshire to Huron. Go
north from Huron to the lake. [Roth Park]

[Ontbirds] Presqu'ile - Ducks and Shorebirds and Eared Grebe

2010-10-12 Thread Bree, David (MNR)
While not a million ducks (what a site that would be) Popham Bay off
Presqu'ile Provincial Park had its first big raft of divers today.
About 6000 birds in one big long raft was almost a kilometre offshore.
Scope views showed most were scaup, I'm thinking Greater but I could not
tell at that distance. Also about 500 Redheads. Around the edge of the
raft were 3-4 Horned Grebe and a smaller darker Eared Grebe! Even more
distant grebes may have been Red-necked.

Still a few shorebirds

Pectoral - 4

Dunlin - 25

Black-bellied Plovers - 24 (all sleeping)

Semipalmated Plovers - 9

White-rumped Sandpiper - 8

Semipalmated Sandpiper - 3

Also still a couple of Yellow-rumped Warblers in with the sparrows.

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, exit Hwy. 401 south at exit 509 and
follow the signs through Brighton.

Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Visitors to Gull Island not using a
boat should be prepared to wade through shin-deep water in which there
is often a swift current and a substrate that is somewhat uneven and
slippery. It should also be noted that on waterfowl hunting days
(Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays), Gull Island, High Bluff
Island, Owen Point, and part of the calf pasture are not available for
bird-watching on those days. Birders are encouraged to record their
observations on the bird sightings board provided near the campground
office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a rare bird
report for species not listed there.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Black-backed Woodpecker and migrants

2010-10-12 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Ontbirders
Spent the morning birding various areas on the east side of Ottawa. One of the
highlights was a female Black-backed Woodpecker at the Mer Bleue. It was
pecking away on a dying spruce tree at the end of the first bridge along the
main trail. Over along Milton Road we observed 2 Sandhill Cranes feeding in a
field and 1 light morph Rough-legged Hawk migrating south over Trim Road. On my
way home there was a Northern Shrike near the corner of Carling Ave and Rifle
Road.

Good Biridng, Bruce

Directions: Milton Rd.:From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 east to exit 96 . Go north for
2 km on Boundary Road to Russell Road (Regional 26). Turn right onto Russell
and drive 3.5 km to Milton Road (Regional 31). Turn left on Milton Road and go
about 2 km to the bridge and start looking as you head north.
Directions: Mer Bleue: From Ottawa take Highway 417 east to Anderson Rd. exit.
Follow north to Ridge Rd. and turn right. Follow aproxiemately 2.5 km to a
parking area.
