[Ontbirds] Chimney Swift Grasshopper Sparrow at Lakeside Park, Mississauga/20 April 2011
Yesterday afternoon I birded Lakeside Park for an hour starting at 3:45 pm. I found the Grasshopper Sparrow feeding along the asphalt path close to the lake behind the new children's play area. There were also four species of swallow feeding over the lake close to shore: 30 Tree, 1 Barn, 5 Purple Martin and 8 Cliff. The tangled areas along the lake and in the creek were swarming with White-throated and Chipping Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos. Three Yellow-rumped Warbers were only warblers I saw and one Eastern Phoebe was the only flycatcher. Lakeside Park is located just along Lake Ontario just east the PetroCan Refinery. There is a large new parking lot located off Lakeshore just west of the Dog Lease-free area. Access Lakeshore from Erin Mills Park of the QEW. [Ontbirds] Bell's Vireo - Pt Pelee National Park
Happy Saturday everyone! Just came back from seeing the Bell's Vireo and thought I could provide a little more detail. The bird seems to be moving slowly north along the west beach footpath. We saw is approx 200 m north of the Tip parking lot near the serengeti tree. It's been hanging around with kinglets and gnatcatchers. We also saw a blue-headed vireo and Nashville warbler in the group. If you're looking for the bird, I would suggest taking the shuttle to the tip and walking north on the footpath Good birding Sarah Rupert Leamington ON Sent from my iPhone ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Bell's Vireo at Pt Pelee...
At 8:20am myself, John and Michael Baker just hopped off the tram and the first bird we saw was the Bell's Vireo as it flew north across the south tram loop road into the tram loop woods and perched momentarily giving clear views for identification. The bird then disappeared until Alan Wormington managed to relocate it about 25 minutes later when others were unable to find it. Great to hear others keen on seeing it were successful! Alan says this is the first April record for Bell's Vireo in Ontario. Good birding! Steve Pike ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] OFO Algonquin Park Trip: 21 April 2012
Over 55 enthusiastic birders enjoyed cool breezes and periodic light snow squalls today while recording 58 species along the Highway 60 Corridor of the Park. We had good looks at a male Spruce Grouse doing flutter flights, a Gray Jay and two Boreal Chickadees along Opeongo Road. Some reported hearing a Black-backed Woodpecker there as well. Two Sandhill Cranes flew over as we watched the Evening Grosbeaks at the Visitor Centre feeder. Two or more Pine Warblers were seen and heard in Lake of Two Rivers Campground. Two Rusty Blackbirds were noted at km 8. I want to thank my co-leader, Justin Peter, for his great help finding birds today. Thanks also to all the participants who once again made this a fun day in Algonquin Park. [Ontbirds] Long-billed Dowitcher - Scanlon Creek in Simcoe County
Today we went to Scanlon Creek Conservation Area north of Bradford in Simcoe County to check out the shorebirds at the drawn-down reservoir with extensive mudflats around the edges. We saw a Long-billed Dowitcher molting into breeding plumage, along with about 14 Greater Yellowlegs and 6 Lesser Yellowlegs also molting into breeding plumage. Please see link to photos and how we identified it as a Long-billed Dowitcher. http://www.jeaniron.ca/Shorebirds/2012/lbdscanloncr.htm Directions to Scanlon Creek: From Bradford in Simcoe County east of Highway 400 go north on Simcoe County Road 4 (formerly Highway 11/Yonge Street) to 9th line. Turn right then left at CA sign and continue past the gate house (no charge) to the main parking lot. Check the map near parking lot showing the location of the reservoir. Then walk the trail about 1 km following the Kingfisher symbol. [Ontbirds] Bell's Vireo not re-found this afternoon
After missing the last group of birders watching the bird by just 5 minutes, I proceeded to look from 1:40 till after 6pm. I was joined by 15 others in the first two hours but slowly everyone had to give up. Thanks to all who helped, especially Doug and Blake. It could be found again tomorrow but I hold little hope. A Prairie, Blue-winged, Blackburnian, Nashville, and probably an Orange-crowned were seen while looking for it, among more common migrants. Cheers. [Ontbirds] Fish Crow in Burlington
I went for a bike ride on the Centennial Trail this afternoon. The Centennial Trail parallels the north side of New St., between Guelph Line and Burloak Dr. Heading back south on my way home about 4:45 PM, about halfway between Burloak and Appleby, I flushed a single crow as I rode by it. It was on the grass quite close to the bike path. I wasn't paying close attention to it, but when it flew up and away from me, it started it's Nya, Nya, Nya call, at least a half dozen times. The call was identical to the Fish Crow I saw on the lakeshore in Bronte a couple of weeks ago. I stopped to watch as it flew away. The bird had the same flight characters as the Bronte bird. A shallower, quicker wing cadence, without the rowing appearance of American Crows. Directions: Go south from the QEW toward Lake Ontario on either Burloak or Appleby. The Centennial Trail bisects these roads between Fairview and New St. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Black Vulture in Lambton County
Posting for Robin McLeod b...@execulink.com At 5 PM on 21 Apr, a Black Vulture was standing in a field with cattle just west of the Forest Road and south of Egremont Road. It then flew and was last seen at 5:10 soaring/gliding north over Egremont Road about 2 km west of Forest Road. Several photos taken while standing and flying show grey head, white wing patches at the wing tips, and short tail. Directions: from Hwy 402 take Forest Road (# 21) north about 1 km, turn west on Egremont Road (county road 22). However, the bird is now probably far away from the location where it was seen.
