Report submitted by Ed Couture ()
Beamer Conservation Area, Grimsby, ON information may be found at:
http://www.niagarapeninsulahawkwatch.org/

Site Description:
Hawk migration monitoring at the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in
Grimsby, Ontario is conducted by the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch (NPH). All
counting is done by volunteers. Not all members are counters nor does a
counter have to be a member. Typically one person is the designated counter
for each day but other observers present assist with the spotting and
identification. Counting is done from a steel observation tower with a
wooden floor. For wind protection on cold days, particularly in March, a
black plastic wind guard is installed around the tower's platform. This
platform easily accommodates ten people but on most busy days, no more than
five or six observers would be on it.

The site lies within a publicly accessible property owned by the Niagara
Peninsula Conservation Authority. There is no charge for admittance. The
tower stands in the centre of a mowed area with a gravel ring road near the
outer edge. This provides lots of room to park vehicles (along the road)
and set up lawn chairs, telescopes and cameras. Toilet facilities are
present. During the counting season, the NPH erect a counting board to
display seven day's worth of observation data for the public. The box
enclosing the sign contains brochures and silhouette sheets for the public
as well as bulletin boards with news and historical sighting records.

Directions to site:
To get to Beamer CA, take the QEW to Exit 71/72, follow Christie
St./Mountain St. to the top of the escarpment, turn right on Ridge Road
West, and go 1.6km to Quarry Rd. Turn right on Quarry Rd. and drive 100m to
the conservation area. Parking is normally available inside the park. If
parking at the entrance or on the roads, do NOT leave valuables in your
car.

Please note: Data in this report is not official until reviewed and finalized
after the end of the season. © 2013 Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch

[Ontbirds] Rondeau update May 15, 2013

2013-05-15 Thread Reuven Martin
 Good afternoon birders,

Although activity has dropped with the very hot weather, there are still
plenty of birds to see out there today.

A Prothonotary Warbler was seen on Tulip Tree Trail where it crosses
Harrison Trail.

The Worm-eating Warbler was seen again at Spicebush bridge A.

Whimbrel was reported on the beach south of beach access #11.

Olive-sided flycatcher was seen at Maintenance and a Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher was along Rondeau rd. halfway between Spicebush Trail and South
Point Trail.

There are apparently at least 4 Hooded Warblers at the maintenance loop,
although many are having trouble finding any at all.

At Blenheim Sewage Lagoons today, 4 Wilson's Phalarope, at least 20
Short-billed Dowitcher and 2 Black Tern. There have been concerns about
activity at the lagoons. There is no guarantee that access to this great
site will remain, so please ensure that you park only on the lagoon side of
the road so farm equipment can get past and that you lock the gate (it is
acceptable to leave the lock open while you are in the lagoons, but the
lock needs to be looped through the chain and gate so it appears locked).

Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do
so at the Visitor Centre.

More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends of
Rondeau is available at the Friends' website:

Directions:

relevant information are to be found at the Visitor Centre. To reach

[Ontbirds] Pelee Island May 15

2013-05-15 Thread Ken Burrell
Hi Birders,

Pelee Island has been pretty active, similar to other sand-spits along Lake
Erie. Today Alvan Buckley and I noted a good push of migrants, with at least 26
species of warblers. In total around 130 species were seen throughout the
island.

Highlights are listed below:
Dickcissel - 1 reverse migrant off Fish Point this AM around 7am
Prairie Warbler - 1 male at Lighthouse Point
Prothonotary Warbler - territorial male at Fish Point
Cerulean Warbler - 1 male at Middle Point
Golden-winged Warbler - 1 male at Fish Point
Hooded Warbler - 1 male at Middle Point

A moderate reverse migration took place off Fish Point this AM, with the
notables being ~260 Baltimore Orioles and 45 American Pipits taking part (along
with the Dickcissel).

The Blue Grosbeak was seen yesterday morning, however we didn't look for it
today (it may still be in the area).

Please email me for specific directions.

Good Birding,
Ken Burrell (and Alvan Buckley)

[Ontbirds] WILSON'S PHALAROPE / SB DOWITCHERS - West Perth Wetlands (Mitchell)

2013-05-15 Thread Dave Tracey Brown
Hi folks,
I managed to get out to the West Perth Wetlands this evening here in
Mitchell...and found several shorebird species were foraging in the main
shorebird cell.

Thanks to Jarmo J. for pointing out a WILSON’S PHALAROPE when I first arrived.
(looked to be a male...though late evening lighting wasn’t optimal) It was
actively feeding just a bit to the east along the berm from the parking
lotpicking bugs off plants poking up out of the water.

Also had a flock of 64 SB Dowitchersand it sounds like other locations are
reporting good sized flocks of SB Dowitchers today as well. This is definitely
the largest flock of this species I’ve ever recorded at the WPW’s.

Other shorebird species seen:
Semi-P. Plover4
Dunlin15
Least Sandpiper20+
Lesser Yellowlegs 7
Greater Yellowlegs1
Killdeer 4
White-rumped Sandp.1
Spotted Sandpiper 2

Also had Eastern Meadowlarks 3American Pipits 2...Nashville warbler and E.
Kingbirdalong with a couple hundred swallows...Cliff 2. Rough-winged 6,
Barn 10 and the rest were Tree.

Water levels continue to look good.
Good Birding!
