[Ontbirds] Ross's Goose @ Reesor Pond

2013-09-22 Thread Elias
Previously reported Ross's Goose was still seen this morning at 6:45am when
I got there. But it took off with a flock of Canada Geese at 7:25am. It
may return later in the day to roost as it did before. Good luck.

Reesor Pond is in Markham on the west side of Reesor Road south of Highway
7 and just north of Highway 407.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Egret at Tilbury

2013-09-22 Thread Ken Burrell
The Snowy Egret that has been present variously for the past few weeks at the
Tilbury Sewage lagoons was again present this morning.

Directions: the lagoons are accessed from Hwy 401 by getting off at exit 56 and
going west on Mill Street to the first road (Edgefield Sideroad) and turning
north. Follow this to the next road and make a right (east). The lagoons are on
your right.

[Ontbirds] Dowitchers and shorebirds - Clairville Reservoir

2013-09-22 Thread David Pryor
Ontbirders -

At 8:15am this morning, I found 2 long-billed dowitchers at the upper
Claireville reservoir in Toronto. They were initially foraging with several
yellowlegs just off the western mudflat, then flew across the reservoir to the
eastern side.

Other shorebirds present included american golden-plover, pectoral sandpiper,
both greater and lesser yellowlegs, and a number of killdeer. Several great
egret and great blue heron were also seen as well as the expected gulls, ducks
and geese.

A scope is helpful although probably not required for viewing any birds on the
near mudflats but is necessary for ID-ing any shorebirds on the opposite
(eastern) shoreline.

Claireville reservoir is located in Toronto, just north of Pearson airport.

Directions - take Hwy. 427 north to the Finch off-ramp. Turn left (west) onto
Finch, then drive ~2km to the intersection of Finch and Kenview. Turn right at
this traffic light into the Wild Water Kingdom parking lot and park on east
side of the parking lot near the picnic areas. The gates into the parking lot
were open and unmanned this morning so I assume there's no charge for parking
at this time of year.

Walk down past the picnic areas towards the trees and scrub bordering the
reservoir. There aren't really many decent routes cutting through the scrub so
you may have to beat your own path to the waterline.

[Ontbirds] Marbled Godwit Mitchell's Bay, Chatham-Kent

2013-09-22 Thread Josh Vandermeulen
No sign of the Purple Sandpiper today at the waterfront in Mitchell's Bay,
however a Marbled Godwit is present. From the park, scan the bay to the north.
The Godwit was feeding in shallow water where a group of Caspian Terns were
roosting.

 Directions from Blake's post yesterday:

Off highway 40 south of Wallaceburg, find Electric Line (west) (county road
42). Follow to Bear Line and make a short jog to the left over to Bay Line.
Follow Bay Line straight into the village to the waterfront. A park and
parking lot are on the right.

[Ontbirds] Renfrew County: Lake Dore: Long-tailed Jaeger, Parasitic Jaeger, Little Gull, Northern Mockingbird

2013-09-22 Thread Bruce Di Labio
Hi Ontbirders
Today, September 22nd, I spent 5 hours this morning birding the Lake Dore area.
There were lots of flocks of Canada Geese migrating along with a few species of
both diving and puddle ducks. Both the previously reported Long-tailed and
Parasitic Jaegers were still present at 7:45a.m. but disappeared to the south
after about 30 minutes. No Sabine's Gulls were found but a winter adult Little
Gull was observed resting with 50+ Bonaparte's Gulls. At 11:15 a.m. a juvenile
Long-tailed Jaeger was chasing Bonaparte's Gull off the boat launch at
Biederman Park and disappeared at 11:30a.m. I left the area at noon without
relocating any jaegers. An adult and 2 juvenile Northern Mockingbirds were
observed feeding in an apple tree near Biederman Park. Other species of note
included 4 Red-necked Grebe, 2 Horned Grebe, 1 imm. Bald Eagle, 30+ Palm
Warbler, 2 Orange-crowned Warbler, 150+ Rusty Blackbird, and 8 White-crowned
Sparrow.

Directions: From Ottawa take 417 west to the second exit to Renfrew. South into
Renfrew then west (at the Tim Horton's) on hwy 60 to Kelly's Corners then north
on hwy 9 then slightly north on hwy 41 then west on Lake Dore Rd and look for a
location where you have good sight lines over the lake.

Ring-billed Gull.
