Richard Poort just sent me photos of a Red Phalarope swimming around at the
barge above the falls at Niagara. This is all the detail I have for now. Maybe
if someone else is there they can post further.

[Ontbirds] Tufted Titmouse, Kingston (Howe Island)

2013-11-30 Thread Sharon E. David
The Tufted Titmouse present since at least October 14th was observed this AM
at my feeder. It is still travelling between the feeders at #80 (my home)
and #110 Havenwood Trail. Feel free to park in my driveway and walk the
road. You can walk my property but please stay on the road at #110. The
bird is easiest viewed from the road at #110 feeding on the green window
feeder and at my various feeders at #80 (feeds mostly on the green clinging
feeder but has been seen on the copper feeder on the water side). It is a
difficult bird to see/find but easiest early in the am or about ½ hour
before sundown for last feeding of the day (particularly at #110 then).
Most of the sightings at my feeders have been early in the day. Red-bellied
Woodpecker is also present.

2013-11-30 Thread Marcie Jacklin
Hi.

The Lark Sparrow I was sighted around 11:30 this morning in the yards at
793/801 Niagara parkway. The home owners are very accommodating but please
knock on the door and ask permission first. Also a snow goose along the
parkway at Anger ave , just north of the Lark Sparrow.

Subject: [Ontbirds] Lark Sparrow Fort Erie, yes

Our little friend is still hanging around. Re found further down the road
in a bush with a large group of house sparrows on the lawn of number 845.
It seems to fly in hang around for a few minutes then flies off. When we
watched it come in, it flew in from the river side of the road. It does
stick amongst the house sparrows

Thanks to john black and dan salibury for helping us find the bird

[Ontbirds] Turkey Vulture - Presqu'ile Provincial Park Brighton

2013-11-30 Thread Paul O'Toole
Took a quick trip down the road from Kingston, pretty quiet day until I cam
across this Juvenile Turkey Vulture taking shelter from the winds near the
parking area for Beach #3. Bird did fly off after a while and appeared to be
healthy. Noted sighting on bird board at presqu'ile. No signs of any snowy
owls, the duck hunters were shooting occassionaly so they may be further out on
the islands. Small group of snow buntings travelled up the beach in search of
food.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5477/11137398705_4389879175_c.jpg

Directions:

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Visitors to Gull Island not using a
boat should be prepared to wade through water that is barely shin-deep,
not taking into account any wave action,.in which there
is often a swift current and a substrate that is somewhat uneven and
slippery. It should also be noted that, because duck hunting is given
priority on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, Gull Island,
High Bluff Island, Owen Point, and part of the calf pasture are not available
for bird-watching on those
days. Birders are encouraged to record their observations on
the bird sightings board provided near the campground office by The Friends
of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed
there.

[Ontbirds] Glaucous and Iceland Gulls Ottawa

2013-11-30 Thread mark gawn
Jen Spallin and I counted 7 Glaucous and 5 Iceland Gull this morning at the
Trail Road dump site, along with several hundred Herring Gull and dozens of
Great Black-backed Gull. Another observer saw a sub adult Bald Eagle at the
same location shortly after we left.
The birds are best viewed roosting on the small frozen ponds north of Trail
Road about 500 meters east of the recycling plant.

[Ontbirds] Roughies, Snow Buntings and Longspurs - SW of Ottawa

2013-11-30 Thread iain wilkes
Out doing a tour of the fields southwest of Ottawa between Richmond and
Fallowfield on several of the county roads. Many small flocks of Snow Buntings
maybe 30 to 50 birds each. One Lapland Longspur just north of Richmond.
Roughies here and there between Trail Road dump and Dwyer Hill Side road.

These birds are all on the move so I suspect directions other than the general
area is not of much use.

Rick: Check your rearview again!

PS: can someone explain all of that white stuff which seems to be everywhere?

Visitors:
It was nice to see HBMO's major domo' Jason Sodergren back for a visit
from Homer, Alaska; and a family of 4 from Amherstburg came out to spend
some time on the tower.

Weather:
Although warmer today the stronger winds out of the S made it feel colder
than yesterday. The temperature ranged from 1.6C - 4C. The winds were out
of the S all day in the 11 - 18 km/hr range. There was a steadily declining
barometric pressure each hour of the count.

Raptor Observations:
23 raptors of 5 species including 5 late Turkey Vultures. There was a small
kettle around 11:15 that included 2 TV's, 3 Red-tails, and an immature
Golden Eagle. Not too bad for the last official day of the 2013 hawk count.

Non-raptor Observations:
Passerines moved again early in the day with 308 birds of 9 species. Six
more Snow Buntings flew over this morning, as did a clean flock of 16 Rusty
Blackbirds. Others included: 4 Tundra Swan; 18 American Crow; 162 European
Starling; 6 Cedar Waxwing; 77 Red-winged Blackbird; 4 Pine Siskin; and 15
American Goldfinch.

[Ontbirds] Bald eagles (Ottawa)

2013-11-30 Thread willott123
Hi Omtbirders:

Late this morning I was treated to 2 Bsld Eagles circling overhead at the end
of Lakeside Gardens. At least one of them was an adult bird but they both may
have been . One for sure. They were soon joined by either. 3 crows or
ravens, too far even with binos to ID.

Early in the morning, I saw up to 30 Mourning Doves along Wall Road in
Orleans. That is the most I have seen in one spot here in Ottawa. Happy
birding.

Although I missed the lark sparrow (again), I was somewhat consoled by the snow

landed in a tree behind 1387 Niagara Parkway.

[Ontbirds] Glaucous, Iceland, and Black-backed gulls etc. at North Bay landfill,

2013-11-30 Thread richardtafel
Recent plummeting, colder weather has reduced drastically the
previous several hundreds of gulls (mostly Herring) (now only about 150
gulls present) at the North Bay landfill, but left behind at least a dozen
Glaucous, of all ages, a few juvenile Icelands, and juveniles of both
black-backed gulls, 8 Bald eagles, plus small flocks of Snow Buntings and
Tree Sparrows, and dozens of ravens. And, one can get quite close to them
along, easy to travel, hard-packed access roads, as they forage. Good for
picture-taking.
The landfill is about 15 miles north of North Bay,up hwy11, and along
Sand Dam road

[Ontbirds] 2013-2014 Ontario winter bird list

2013-11-30 Thread Josh Vandermeulen

Ontbirders,
Tomorrow, December 1 marks the beginning of the winter birding period. Blake
Maybank has asked me to compile the Ontario sightings this year, and Blake will
be hosting the results on his website,
http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/maybank/other/onwinter.htm. Links to the lists for
the other Canadian provinces and territories, as well as a few other select
areas, are found near the top of the web page. The winter birding season
includes the period from December 1 to February 28/29, inclusive. Approximately
340 species have been recorded during the winter in Ontario, with around 200
species recorded annually. Last season, 217 species were recorded during the
winter period, down from the 224 the winter before but still the second highest
total since records have been tabulated. Highlights from last winter included
Western Grebe, Baird's Sandpiper, several Slaty-backed Gulls, White-winged
Dove, Fish Crow, Cave Swallow, Barn Swallow, Bay-breasted Warbler,
Chestnut-sided Warbler, Scarlet Tanager,
  and Western Tanager.
Just post your sightings to Ontbirds, ebird.org, or send me an email, and I
will post an update to Ontbirds every month or so. That way you can check the
list and inform me of any species that have been seen but are not present on
the list.
Enjoy the winter birding season!
