[Ontbirds] Rondeau Migration Report May 13, 2014
Good morning birders, Birding has been fairly good this morning at Rondeau. A female Summer Tanager was seen on Harrison Trail near the Group Campground, and this area has been fairly productive. Tulip Tree Trail has been fairly productive as well, with the male Prothonotary Warbler continuing to sing near post 7, although he is moving up and down the slough so some patience is required. White-eyed and Yellow-throated Vireo and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher have been seen along here among others. Early this morning a female Prothonotary Warbler was hopping on the front porch of the Visitor Centre, apparently having hit the window. We captured her and let her recuperate in a cardboard box, and later released her apparently unharmed. Hopefully she'll join the male nearby on Tulip Tree. A Hooded Warbler was seen on Spicebush Trail. Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email. eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share them with the username RondeauPPVisitorCentre for our records. [Ontbirds] Huge fall out of warblers at Colonel Samuel Smith Park, Toronto
This morning I birded the park from 6:30 to 11:30 am. There were few birds in first hour of birding but around 7:45 am a thunderstorm passed north bringing in some light rain causing a large fallout of warblers and other passerines. I recorded 22 species of warblers but nothing super rare: abundance from high to low: Yellow-rumped: 85: Chestnut-sided and Magnolia: 25; Black-throated Green: 20; Yellow: 15; Blackburnian: 14; American Redstart, Tennessee and Black-throated Blue: 12; Palm: 8; Common Yellowthroat: 5; Ovenbird and Bay-breasted: 4; Northern Parula: 3; Orange-crowned and Blackpoll: 2; singles of Hooded Warbler (female), Cape May, Canada and Wilson's. These number are very conservative. Also in the dogwood patch a very tired and hungry Marsh Wren spent about 15 minutes feeding in small area. Also seen was a single Olive-sided Flycatcher and four Gray-cheeked Thrushes. A completed listing of 61 species seen is posted on E.bird. By the looks of things more waves of storms will be grounding a lot more migrants over the next few days .. and remember, it pays to go early because the birds often rapidly disperse or leave within a hour or less from the time of the groundings. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update May 13, 2014
Good afternoon, It's a hot, sticky afternoon out there, although storms are in the forecast for later this afternoon. The heat has slowed things down a lot in the birding department, but things should start to improve as the day goes on. Golden-winged Warbler has been seen on Tulip Tree and Spicebush Trails. Several cuckoos have been reported around the park at various locations. A Peregrine Falcon was being mobbed by Eastern Kingbirds near the park store. Hooded Warbler was reported on Tulip Tree Trail. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restricted at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds there.
