[Ontbirds] Kentucky, Cerulean and Prairie - Blue Heron

2014-05-13 Thread Bruce Di Labio via ONTBIRDS
Hi all,
Kentucky Warbler is still present in the same area as yesterday but only heard
singing. Also around the same general area is a female Cerulean Warbler,
Yellow-billed Cuckoo and a singing White-eyed Vireo. At the seasonal trail in
Blue Heron, there was a female Prairie Warbler moving south towards parking
lot. Also, there has been a large number of Canada Warblers between Blue Heron
and NW beach (5+ birds).
Good birding,

[Ontbirds] Rondeau Migration Report May 13, 2014

2014-05-13 Thread Reuven Martin via ONTBIRDS
Good morning birders,

Birding has been fairly good this morning at Rondeau.

A female Summer Tanager was seen on Harrison Trail near the Group
Campground, and this area has been fairly productive.

Tulip Tree Trail has been fairly productive as well, with the male
Prothonotary Warbler continuing to sing near post 7, although he is moving
up and down the slough so some patience is required. White-eyed and
Yellow-throated Vireo and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher have been seen along
here among others.

Early this morning a female Prothonotary Warbler was hopping on the front
porch of the Visitor Centre, apparently having hit the window. We captured
her and let her recuperate in a cardboard box, and later released her
apparently unharmed. Hopefully she'll join the male nearby on Tulip Tree.

A Hooded Warbler was seen on Spicebush Trail.

Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do
so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email.

eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share
them with the username RondeauPPVisitorCentre for our records.

More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends of Rondeau is
available at the Friends' website: www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca.

Directions: Take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham
Kent Road 15. Turn right and follow the signs to the park. Bird sighting
information, bird checklists, bird feeders, and breakfast and lunch offered
by the Friends can be found at the visitor centre. To reach the visitor
centre from the park gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner
Ave., then follow it around the bend to the parking lot. I lead guided
hikes in the park twice daily - contact the visitor centre for more
information.

[Ontbirds] Lazuli Bunting flyover Pelee tip

2014-05-13 Thread Ken Burrell via ONTBIRDS
Brandon and I had a female bunting which shows all the characteristics of a
female Lazuli Bunting.

The bird flew off the south tip at 9:28. It had a higher pitched flight call,
which prompted our attention. Brandon was able to get good flight shot photos,
which all show 2 obvious wing bars and lack of streaking on the face and
underside among other features pointing to LABU.

At about 11 am today I had a Yellow-breasted Chat at the extreme western tip
of Ashbridge's Bay Park in Toronto.

Ashbridge's Bay Park is at the foot of Coxwell Ave. in Toronto. From the
Ashbridge's parking lot go south on the main trail and follow the paved path
heading west to the bushy area at the extreme western end of the park. I
believe this is the same spot the last Chat was reported at Ashbridge's in
the fall a few years ago.

[Ontbirds] Huge fall out of warblers at Colonel Samuel Smith Park, Toronto

2014-05-13 Thread Wayne via ONTBIRDS
This morning I birded the park from 6:30 to 11:30 am. There were few
birds in first hour of birding but around 7:45 am a thunderstorm passed
north bringing in some light rain causing a large fallout of warblers
and other passerines. I recorded 22 species of warblers but nothing
super rare: abundance from high to low: Yellow-rumped: 85:
Chestnut-sided and Magnolia: 25; Black-throated Green: 20; Yellow: 15;
Blackburnian: 14; American Redstart, Tennessee and Black-throated Blue:
12; Palm: 8; Common Yellowthroat: 5; Ovenbird and Bay-breasted: 4;
Northern Parula: 3; Orange-crowned and Blackpoll: 2; singles of Hooded
Warbler (female), Cape May, Canada and Wilson's. These number are very
conservative. Also in the dogwood patch a very tired and hungry Marsh
Wren spent about 15 minutes feeding in small area. Also seen was a
single Olive-sided Flycatcher and four Gray-cheeked Thrushes. A
completed listing of 61 species seen is posted on E.bird. By the looks
of things more waves of storms will be grounding a lot more migrants
over the next few days .. and remember, it pays to go early because the
birds often rapidly disperse or leave within a hour or less from the
time of the groundings.

Direction: located at the south end of Colonel Samuel Smith Drive which
runs south off the Kipling south of Lakeshore Boulevard.

[Ontbirds] Chimney Swifts are back!

2014-05-13 Thread Kathy Jones via ONTBIRDS
Posted with permission of the Ontbirds Coordinator

Chimney Swifts are back!

With the first swifts spotted in Ontario, the 2014 SwiftWatch season has begun!
Report your first sightings on www.ebird.cahttp://www.ebird.ca; you can also
track the spring migration at http://goo.gl/KwRbX0. If you observe nesting and
roosting swifts please report their nesting chimney to http://goo.gl/cJVDm .

This spring we are looking for individuals or groups to take part in the
National Population Roost Monitoring Blitz. Participants monitor a known
roosting site for four evenings (May 21, May 25, May 29, and June 2). The
results from Ontario SwiftWatch are combined with other groups to assess
Chimney Swift population trends across Canada.

In Ontario any known roost site can be monitored but we have coordinated
programs in place in Aurora, Bancroft, Barrie, Brighton, Dundas, Fort Erie,
Guelph, Halton, Hamilton, London, Ottawa, Pembroke, Picton, Port Rowan,
Stratford and Toronto.

If you are willing to spend 1-4 evenings (May 21, May 25, May 29, and June 2)
monitoring swifts please contact Kathy at
volunt...@birdscanada.orgmailto:volunt...@birdscanada.org for information
and/or your Regional SwiftWatch coordinators contact information. If you are
unsure where to monitor we can also point to the Chimney Swift roost nearest to
you.

To learn more about this program visit the Ontario
Swiftwatchhttp://www.birdscanada.org/research/speciesatrisk/chsw
(http://www.birdscanada.org/research/speciesatrisk/chsw/) web pages,
information on how to become involved is available under resources and how
can I help. SwiftWatch is supported in Ontario by Environment Canada and in

[Ontbirds] Rondeau Update May 13, 2014

2014-05-13 Thread Reuven Martin via ONTBIRDS
Good afternoon,

It's a hot, sticky afternoon out there, although storms are in the forecast
for later this afternoon. The heat has slowed things down a lot in the
birding department, but things should start to improve as the day goes on.

Golden-winged Warbler has been seen on Tulip Tree and Spicebush Trails.

Several cuckoos have been reported around the park at various locations.

A Peregrine Falcon was being mobbed by Eastern Kingbirds near the park
store.

Hooded Warbler was reported on Tulip Tree Trail.

There seem to be quite a few flycatchers in the park today including an
Acadian reported on Tulip Tree Trail and quite a few Yellow-bellied.

Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do
so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Egret - Kingsville

A Snowy Egret just flew over my house while barbecuing on the back deck.

Smaller size, black bill, and golden feet were all evident as it was only some

of rain and thunderstorms are moving in.

Lakeside Park along the waterfront at the foot of Division St., cedar Creek CA
along the Arner Townline, or Holiday Beach CA could be potential
landing/shelter spots given the flight direction.

The chat was there for most of the day.
Another birder/photographer showed me a pic of a warbler he briefly saw
that he couldn't ID. With some help, I was told that the description fit a
Brewster's warbler. The yellow mohawk, black eyeline and yellow tuft on the
chest were distinct.

Other nice birds included 2 female scarlet tanagers and some Wilson's
warblers.

The Brewster and ST were seen on the path that runs along the boatclub near
the thicket where the towhee(s) were seen.

[Ontbirds] Tufted Titmouse - Presqu'ile Provincial Park

2014-05-13 Thread Dennis Garratt via ONTBIRDS
Greetings

Today at approximately 11:00 I found a Tufted Titmouse feeding in the brush
just north of the visitor centre/lighthouse. I am not aware of any previous
sightings at Presqu'ile since the 1980's!

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that
is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restricted
at this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds
there.
Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the bird sightings
board provided near the campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park
and to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed there.
