[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl in North Bay

2014-11-27 Thread Brent Turcotte via ONTBIRDS
--- Begin Message ---
I spotted a Snowy Owl perched on a jumble of broken ice piled up along the
shore close to the mouth of Chippewa Creek in North Bay.
I estimate it was about 20 metres from shore.  It was in sight of about 60
Mallards that were on the creek.

Go up Highway 11 North, turn right onto Fisher, turn left on Main, go up
overpass, at bottom of overpass turn right onto Judge.Turn right onto Memorial
Drive, turn left onto Queen.  From there you can see the creek, and a couple of
places to park.  TheSnowy Owl was also visible from Amelia Beach.
Cheers, Brent

[Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Birding Report for Week Ending November 27, 2014.

2014-11-27 Thread Fred Helleiner
Birding at Presqu'ile Provincial Park this week has been fairly typical
for late November, except for a few surprises.

On Friday, November 21, three swan species were present. About 80 MUTE
SWANS on that day were eclipsed by a count of 187 on November 23. Also
present were a TRUMPETER SWAN and eleven TUNDRA SWANS. A female
NORTHERN PINTAIL was at Gull Island on November 23. A few CANVASBACKS
and RING-NECKED DUCKS continue to accompany the hundreds of REDHEADS in
Presqu'ile Bay. The five SURF SCOTERS seen there on November 23 may be
the same group that was present for over a month but had not been seen
for almost two weeks. About 25 HOODED MERGANSERS and a RUDDY DUCK were
also in Presqu'ile Bay on November 23. Four WILD TURKEYS, perhaps the
largest group ever seen in the Park, were found yesterday. A non-birder
surprised those who confirmed his identification of a RED-THROATED LOON
near the edge of the ice in Presqu'ile Bay on November 24. HORNED
GREBES were still in Presqu'ile Bay on two of the past five days, with
two on November 23. Only one DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT remained to be
seen on November 24. Three GREAT BLUE HERONS flew over on November 23,
and one was just outside the Park gate this morning.

A few NORTHERN HARRIERS are being seen. On November 21 an AMERICAN COOT
was in Presqu'ile Bay and SANDHILL CRANE(S) were heard from that
direction. No shorebirds have been seen since Sunday, when a single
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and a glimpsed flying PURPLE SANDPIPER were with
18 DUNLINS. None of the expected GLAUCOUS or ICELAND GULLS could be
found yet. After a number of birders had "dipped out" on SNOWY OWLS on
Sunday and Tuesday, two birders hit the jackpot this afternoon, when at
least 11 and possibly 12 were on Owen Point and the offshore islands,
apparently a one-day record for Presqu'ile. At least six could be seen
from Owen Point and eight could be seen at one point from Gull Island.
Did they move in overnight? A BARRED OWL was at the calf pasture this
morning. An AMERICAN KESTREL and a few MERLINS were seen as recently as
yesterday and today, respectively.

On Sunday two HORNED LARKS were on Gull Island and a very late
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was at Owen Point. AMERICAN PIPITS have been the
most common passerines on Gull Island this week, but 20 SNOW BUNTINGS
were also there on Sunday. The feeders at 83 and 85 Bayshore Road have
had FOX, WHITE-THROATED, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS as well as
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS (also at 102 Bayshore Road) and COMMON GRACKLES
(also at 102 and 186 Bayshore Road). COMMON REDPOLLS have been avoiding
feeders (except for two individuals at 83 Bayshore Road) but have been
increasing in number at Owen Point and Gull Island, where at least two
dozen were seen this afternoon. When PINE SISKINS first showed up this
fall, they too avoided feeders, but now they are patronizing them in
huge numbers. A HOUSE SPARROW at 186 Bayshore Road for two days was an
unusual sight at Presqu'ile.

To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton.
Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid
that is available at the Park gate. Visitors to Gull Island not using a
boat should be prepared to wade through water that is shin-deep,
not taking into account any wave action,.in which there
is often a swift current and a substrate that is somewhat uneven and
slippery. Much of the crossing to Gull Island is covered by thin and
very slippery ice, conditions that demand caution. It should also be
noted that, because duck hunting is given priority on Mondays,
Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, Owen Point, Gull Island,
High Bluff Island, and part of the calf pasture are not
available for bird-watching on those days. Birders are encouraged to
record their observations on the bird sightings board provided near the
campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Park and to fill out a
rare bird report for species not listed there.

[Ontbirds] Snowy Owl - Powassan (North Bay area)

2014-11-27 Thread Lori Anderson
Sighted at 4:20pm., while on return home from viewing the Brambling in North
Bay! Very snow white individual, perched on hydro pole on Chiswick Line, about
1 km. east of highway 11. Chiswick Line is accessed from Hwy 11 at the south
end of Powassan. Snowy Owl frequented this location often last season, and was
just as fond of various perches on Purdon Line which is on the west side of Hwy
11 at Chiwick Line.

Weather:
A completely beautiful November day when the sun was out; a little chilly
when there was full cloud cover. Winds went up to 10km/h from the NW in the
morning, moving to the W and getting a small S component by the end of the
day.

Raptor Observations:
What an exceptional day! There was a really big hour between 12 and 1pm
when we had 59 raptors fly over; mostly Red-tails with quite a nice flight
of Red-shoulders as well. During the rest of the day, 4 Golden Eagles
migrated, one landing on the ice and picking up a snack where it was
watched very closely by two of the resident Bald Eagles. A dark-colouration
Rough-legged Hawk was a very nice sighting at the north side of the marsh
and a kettle of 13 Turkey Vultures also made their way across. At the end
of the day, 109 raptors had migrated, lovely!

Non-raptor Observations:
Most of the excitement of non-raptors came from American Crows, with 1670
passing over the marsh. Goldfinches, Starlings, Robins, Grackles and
Red-winged Blackbirds also made their way overhead. See today's eBird list

Predictions:
-5 to -1C with the winds from the SW and S at 10-15km/h. Flurries in the
afternoon.

[Ontbirds] Brambling, North Bay

2014-11-27 Thread Renee Levesque
The Brambling continues to be seen this afternoon. Makes frequent appearances
on lawn, at the feeders and in the trees around the property and across the
street at Sweetman's Gardens. Owner is fine with your viewing the bird, but
please do not block the driveway and do not go on lawn. Can be seen easily and
readily from paved driveway. Brambling hangs out with the many Evening
Grosbeaks.

Located on private property at 1025 McIntyre Street West. Take Main Street
West to Cormack Street, right on Cormack Street and then a left on McIntrye.
It is the only house on the left side of the road after turning off Cormack.

Ottawa/Gatineau (National Capital Region) E. Ontario, W. Quebec
Compiler and transcriber:
Bob Cermak at robertcerm...@hotmail.com or sighti...@ofnc.ca

Recent reports to November 27, 2014

On the 13th I reported a probable adult non breeding PACIFIC LOON on the 9th
near the Quebec shore of the Ottawa River observed at a distance of about one
and a half km from the Ottawa Des Chenes Rapids Lookout. The OFNC Bird Records
Subcommittee determined that based on the sighting information provided PACIFIC
LOON could not be confirmed. There was a sighting on the 25th and again this
morning (27th) of a distant, possible, adult non breeding PACIFIC LOON on the
same stretch of river east of the Deschenes Rapids. PACIFIC LOON has not yet
been recorded in the Ottawa/Gatineau area as one local birder/lister commented
on the latest report: "I feel like Charlie Brown – and Lucy’s holding the
football"!

The HARLEQUIN DUCK (f) found on the Rideau River on the 4th continues on the
Rideau River at Strathcona Park. Also reported at that location: on the 24th
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (m), HOODED MERGANSER (52) and 200 m south a very late
PIED-BILLED GREBE and on the 20th a HERMIT THRUSH and a male and female pair of
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.

BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER (f) continues to be reported along the Stony Swamp
Conservation Area Jack Pine trail between the parking area and the bird feeder
area and also: at the "start of road Les Collines-de-l'Outaouais", along NCC
trail 10 just north of the Carling Ave parking area (f) and a female along the
Pioneer trail near the entrance to Gatineau Park.

There have been a number of late and very late birds this past week: FOX
SPARROW at the south end of Richmond Rd and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH at the Richmond
lagoon on the 21st, an AMERICAN PIPIT along Panmure Rd near 12th Conc. and a
GREAT BLUE HERON over Westboro on the 22nd, GREEN-WINGED TEAL (m & f or juv)
and REDHEAD (f) at the Moodie Dr pond, GRAY CATBIRD along the NCC trail 24 and
a probable record late TURKEY VULTURE on the Trail Rd landfill on the 23rd, a
singing PINE WARBLER in Pakenham on the 24th and on the 26th a HERMIT THRUSH at
the mouth of the Rideau Canal and a SWAINSON'S THRUSH at the Central
Experimental Farm.

The Trail Rd landfill continues to be an excellent location to study up to 6
gull species. On the 23rd there were RING-BILLED (few), HERRING (150+), ICELAND
(4), GLAUCOUS (2 juv 1 ad), LESSER BLACK-BACKED (1 3rd year) and GREAT
BLACK-BACKED (25) GULLS .

The ponds west of the Shirleys Bay causeway continue to be active, on the 25th
there were BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (ad f) with COMMON GOLDENEYE (150), WHITE-WINGED
SCOTER (1 imm), LESSER SCAUP (30), HOODED (2) and RED-BREASTED (1) MERGANSER
and COMMON LOON (1).

Interesting sightings were: NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD along Farmers Way south of hwy
417 on October 31st (reported this week), SNOW BUNTING at a number of locations
including Wall Rd (140), a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was reported near Dows Lake on
the 22nd, SNOW GOOSE at a number of locations such as on Brownlee Rd (4),
Rushmore Rd (17) and in the east a large flock on Devine Rd on the 24th and a
sub adult GOLDEN EAGLE at the west end of Steele Line south of the Gatineau
Park.

Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations,

[Ontbirds] Brambling, North Bay

2014-11-27 Thread richardtafel
The Brambling is present again today, Thursday, its second day at this site.
It feeds on the ground, often with a large group of Evening Grosbeaks -
close under a number of feeders, on the property of Vic Rizzo at 1025
McIntyre St. W. in North Bay.
Vic asks that no one come upon the lawn, but stay upon the pavement, next to
the lawn area. As said before, please park on the street(s) nearby. The bird
is quite easily spooked, but with patience, one should be able to see it
well from the edge of the driveway. Vic can, if necessary, be reached at his
cell - 705 493-8112.
McIntyre St. is just one block from Main Street at the westerly edge of
North Bay. North Bay can be reached within 3 1/2 hours of no stop-light
driving from Toronto.
The bird is a readily identified, non-breeding adult. Very pretty! Very
unusual for Ontario. (none sighted here for the past 20 years?)
