[Ontbirds] Eastern Bluebird (Sialia Sialis) on the Trailway in Kingsville nr. Mettawas Restaurant (the old Railway Station)
Had a great surprise this evening as we went into the back yard to enjoy the sunshine...and a gorgeous Eastern Bluebird was sitting on our fence...sadly did not have camera with me. When we lived further down on the Trailway nr. Pelee Winery, we had a pair of Indigo Buntings (Passerina Cyanea) every year in early May which we loved. We have a wonderful selection of birds...have a pair of Common Grackles (Quisalus Quiscula) nesting in one of our cedar trees; we have a pair of Cardinals...but think Mrs. Cardinal is on her nest as have only seen the male for the last few days. We also have our regular Redwinged Blackbird, Robins, Bluejays, House sparrows and Black and White Warbler (Moriotilta Varia) and several pairs of Song Sparrows so have lots of entertainment. Will let you all know if the Eastern Bluebird returnsor if the Indigo Buntings find us in our new home...which is not that far away!!!Do have some wonderful photographs of that pair. Happy birding. Sadly I am handicapped now and on a scooter so although enjoy running down to Pelee Point and along the Marsh (we are members), cannot do the birding trails. Used to do some great trails in the Kingston area in Bath many years ago. Sue Bullock ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Piping Plover at Point Pelee. Seacliffe Beach
I found a Piping Plover on the beach at the Ferry terminal in Leamington this evening. This is a different bird than the one on April 18. It has blue over black bands on the right leg and an orange flag on the upper leg. The left leg has a black band. I was not able to see any numbers on the bands. This bird may be still present in the morning for those who missed the first one. There was also a report of two Piping Plovers at Black Willow in the Park at Pelee this afternoon. Report submitted by Matt Mills () Grimsby, ON - Beamer Conservation Area information may be found at: http://www.niagarapeninsulahawkwatch.org/ Site Description: Hawk migration monitoring at the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area in Grimsby, Ontario is conducted by the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch (NPH). All counting is done by volunteers. Not all members are counters nor does a counter have to be a member. Typically one person is the designated counter for each day but other observers present assist with the spotting and identification. Counting is done from a steel observation tower with a wooden floor. For wind protection on cold days, particularly in March, a black plastic wind guard is installed around the tower's platform. This platform easily accommodates ten people but on most busy days, no more than five or six observers would be on it. The site lies within a publicly accessible property owned by the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. There is no charge for admittance. The tower stands in the centre of a mowed area with a gravel ring road near the outer edge. This provides lots of room to park vehicles (along the road) and set up lawn chairs, telescopes and cameras. Toilet facilities are present. During the counting season, the NPH erect a counting board to display seven day's worth of observation data for the public. The box enclosing the sign contains brochures and silhouette sheets for the public as well as bulletin boards with news and historical sighting records. Directions to site: To get to Beamer CA, take the QEW to Exit 71/72, follow Christie St./Mountain St. to the top of the escarpment, turn right on Ridge Road West, and go 1.6km to Quarry Rd. Turn right on Quarry Rd. and drive 100m to the conservation area. Parking is normally available inside the park. If parking at the entrance or on the roads, do NOT leave valuables in your car. Please note: Data in this report is not official until reviewed and finalized after the end of the season. © 2015 Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Barn Swallows; Kingston north
Hello All; Today I witnessed barn swallows building nests under the Loughborough Lake bridge (Perth Rd. north of Kingston and north of Inverary). They can be viewed from beside the base of the bridge on either the north or south side. Best viewed from a boat or canoe (I was in a boat). They are used to boat traffic. Good luck birders all. Re: [Ontbirds] [hamiltonbirds] Plegadis Ibis -8th Line Milton
The bird has now moved closer and based on the bluish-white facial pattern at the base of its bill, it appears to be an adult Glossy Ibis. It is foraging in the flooded field on the west side of 8th Line, about 400m north of Britannia Rd in Milton.
