Was being seen 50 m north of the south intersection of redbud path and woodland
trail at ~5:30. Very hidden so patience is needed.

Take the tram to the midpoint then walk to redbud.

Apologies for the late post. No signal and phone died.

[Ontbirds] OFO Field Trip, Ottawa, May 10, 2015

2015-05-10 Thread Dave Moore
10 participants and 2 leaders birded the Marlborough Forest, the Franktown
Road, Richmond Conservation Area and the Moodie sand pits this morning. The
weather was supposed to be 30C and rain but we got dark clouds and a
temperature around 17C by the end of the trip at 1:15. A nice light breeze
kept the hungry black flies at bay.

A pair of Black-billed Cuckoos engaged in a chase, a singing Brown Thrasher
and a very nicely displaying Upland Sandpiper made up for the many birds
that were easily heard but not seen. The dratted Northern Waterthrush for
example. We ended up with 86 species for the trip, including 13 warbler
species on a trip that wasn't really designed for warblers!

On behalf of Colin Gaskell and myself I would like to thank the folks that
made it out today, a good time was had by all.

Cheers

[Ontbirds] OFO Toronto Islands trip results

2015-05-10 Thread Jay Peterson
Hello Ontbirders,

On Saturday, May 9 there were 33 OFO participants who joined me for the spring
walk. The weather was great with partly cloudy skies and a comfortable high of
23 degrees.

We tallied 73 species on a day where birds were found in small pockets of
activity throughout the islands. Most of this activity was on Algonquin island
where Warblers were plentiful in the tall conifers.

We had 13 species of Warblers including some really nice looks at Cape May,
Blackburnian, Northern Parula and Black-Throated Blue. We noted one singing
Tennessee on Hanlan's as well.

An Orchard Oriole on Algonquin gave good looks. Wood Thrush, Swainson's Thrush,
Veery, Great-crested and Least Flycatchers. Eastern Kingbird, Brown Thrasher,
several Lincoln's Sparrows, a flashy Scarlet Tanager. I noted the buzz call of
Indigo Bunting in a couple places but only a couple of us got looks. Eastern
Bluebird, Caspian and Common Terns, Purple Martin and Cliff Swallows. Many
Baltimore Orioles as the Islands don't disappoint with that species.

As always I thank everyone for coming and again I was treated to a very nice
group of people. See you in September!

Good birding,

Jay Peterson

[Ontbirds] OFO Presqu'ile/Peter's Woods Outing

2015-05-10 Thread Doug McRae
Greetings Ontbirders

18 members and guests enjoyed a fun day of birding at Presqu’ile for the
morning, then a side trip to Peter’s Woods in the afternoon. Bill Gilmour
helped me lead this field trip which tallied about 95 species.

At Presqu’ile we had a pretty good selection of expected migrants and
residents, although warblers (14 spp) were a little scarce and some were heard
only. An increasingly rare treat was seeing a beautiful Red-headed Woodpecker
at the lighthouse, as well as at least 5 Red-bellied at various sites. Sadly
Friday’s Piping Plover hasn’t been seen again but we did see 5 Semipalmated
Plover and a number of Least Sandpipers as well as Killdeer and Spotted
Sandpiper. A morning haze made seeing birds on the offshore islands a bit
difficult but we managed to spot a number of Black-crowned Night Herons as well
as Common and Caspian Tern, Ring-billed, Herring and Bonaparte’s Gull. Other
fun birds were Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting.
While I couldn’t muster much excitement about it, a male House Sparrow was seen
at a feeder near the lighthouse - a somewhat rare bird in the park!

Peter’s Woods is a beautiful old-growth forest north of Grafton. We took an
hour to walk the loop trail and enjoy the huge pine, oak and maples and
wildflowers. Birds were less active at this time of day but there were several
Ovenbirds calling, as well as more Scarlet Tanagers.

Thanks to everyone for taking part - it was great fun and I hope to see you all
again soon,

Cheers,

Doug McRae

[Ontbirds] Point Pelee NP Migration Report -May 10, 2015

2015-05-10 Thread Festival of Birds
It is quite an active day here in the Park with 28 warbler species reported so
far. The Tip started slow with a smattering of species flying off, but as it
warmed up more birds were found in the woods there and elsewhere.

At the Tip a Fish Crow was reported. Also noted was a Yellow-breasted Chat,
which was on the West Side near the large Honey Locust, AKA the Serengeti
tree. As well, Canada, Mourning, Blue-winged Warblers and a Summer Tanager
were noted. Philadelphia Vireo was found there and in several other spots in
the Park. Also, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo was found.

Woodland Nature Trail reports include a Mourning Warbler near Post 1, and a
male Prothonotary Warbler was seen between Bridges A and B.

Tilden Woods was also hopping with a number of sought-after species. These
included a Worm-eating Warbler spotted near where the Chinquapin Trail starts
off the Tilden Trail, east of the boardwalk. Also noted near there were
Gray-cheeked Thrush and Blue-winged Warbler. The rufous morph Screech Owl which
was first spotted yesterday is showing again in Tilden Woods. A number of other
warblers, including Blackpoll, Canada, Mourning and Bay-breasted, were also
found in Tilden

A female Prothonotary was briefly seen at the first wet spot on Shuster Trail.
Also there, Northern Waterthrush and Canada Warbler and a Yellow-throated Vireo.

[Ontbirds] Rondeau Provincial Park Migration Report May 10, 2015: Prothonotary

2015-05-10 Thread Reuven Martin
Good morning,

An odd start today as it was hard to find any migrants before 7:30, but
there are now large numbers at many locations including Tulip Tree Trail,
Maintenance and Pony Barn, and likely others that we haven't received
reports yet. No rarities reported yet but undoubtedly there are some out
there.

Prothonotary Warblers continue to be seen at Log Pond at Pony Barn and at
post 7 on Tulip Tree Trail.

Hooded Warblers have been seen at Pony Barn (by the parking area) and on
Tulip Tree Trail (post 10).

Not many reports yet, but there are lots of birds.

Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do
so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email.

eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share
them with the username RondeauPPVisitorCentre for our records.

More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends of Rondeau is
available at the Friends' website: www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca.

Directions: Take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham
Kent Road 15. Turn right and follow the signs to the park. Bird sighting
information, bird checklists, bird feeders, and breakfast and lunch offered
by the Friends can be found at the visitor centre. To reach the visitor
centre from the park gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner
Ave., then follow it around the bend to the parking lot. I lead guided
hikes in the park twice daily - contact the visitor centre for more
information.

[Ontbirds] Yellow-throated Vireo, Summerstown Forest, Glengarry County

2015-05-10 Thread Martin Bowman

Dear birders,

A Yellow-throated Vireo was singing from a clearly visible perch from
6:55 through 7:30 at the southeastern corner of the parking lot to the
Summerstown Forest trails this morning but was silent when I returned
from a forest walk at noon. This is an unexpected bird in this far
eastern part of the province though I have twice before seen the species
in this forest.

A Solitary Sandpiper was observed in the adjacent swamp.

Among the other 30+ species found up the forest trails (A1, A2, A3: map
in parking lot) were Scarlet Tanager, Ovenbird, Least Flycatcher, Great
Crested Flycatcher,and Eastern Wood-Pewee.

The entrance to Summerstown Forest Trails is clearly signposted on the
west side of County Rd 27 about 1.5 kms. north of Exit 804 of Highway
401 (first exit east of Cornwall).

2015-05-10 Thread Reuven Martin
Good afternoon birders,

Although there was a slight lull in activity when the sun came out, it's
been a great afternoon to be out Rondeau. I haven't seen reports from too
many areas, but Maintenance was very busy, and there were swarms of
warblers moving through the treetops along Bennett Rd.

Prothonotary Warblers continue to be seen on Tulip Tree Trail (pair),
Bennett Rd. (at least 1 male and 1 female at different spot) and Pony Barn
(male).

A female Golden-winged Warbler was on Bennett Rd.

A Brewster's Warbler was on the maintenance loop.

[Ontbirds] Harris's Sparrow west of Long Point

2015-05-10 Thread Diane Salter
A beautiful male Harris's Sparrow is being seen at feeders at 1699
Lakeshore Road. Go south on Hwy #59 almost to Long Point turn right
on Lakeshore Road (Rd. 42) [corner with the Esso Station ] travel west
to house number 1699 (just west of Rd. 23). The bird is coming to
feeders on the east side of the house mainly feeds on the ground. The
bird can be easily seen from the edge of the road. The owner has asked
that birders watch from the roadside not come in the yard.
