[Ontbirds] OFO Field Trip, Ottawa, May 10, 2015
10 participants and 2 leaders birded the Marlborough Forest, the Franktown Road, Richmond Conservation Area and the Moodie sand pits this morning. The weather was supposed to be 30C and rain but we got dark clouds and a temperature around 17C by the end of the trip at 1:15. A nice light breeze kept the hungry black flies at bay. A pair of Black-billed Cuckoos engaged in a chase, a singing Brown Thrasher and a very nicely displaying Upland Sandpiper made up for the many birds that were easily heard but not seen. The dratted Northern Waterthrush for example. We ended up with 86 species for the trip, including 13 warbler species on a trip that wasn't really designed for warblers! On behalf of Colin Gaskell and myself I would like to thank the folks that made it out today, a good time was had by all. [Ontbirds] OFO Toronto Islands trip results
Hello Ontbirders, On Saturday, May 9 there were 33 OFO participants who joined me for the spring walk. The weather was great with partly cloudy skies and a comfortable high of 23 degrees. We tallied 73 species on a day where birds were found in small pockets of activity throughout the islands. Most of this activity was on Algonquin island where Warblers were plentiful in the tall conifers. We had 13 species of Warblers including some really nice looks at Cape May, Blackburnian, Northern Parula and Black-Throated Blue. We noted one singing Tennessee on Hanlan's as well. An Orchard Oriole on Algonquin gave good looks. Wood Thrush, Swainson's Thrush, Veery, Great-crested and Least Flycatchers. Eastern Kingbird, Brown Thrasher, several Lincoln's Sparrows, a flashy Scarlet Tanager. I noted the buzz call of Indigo Bunting in a couple places but only a couple of us got looks. Eastern Bluebird, Caspian and Common Terns, Purple Martin and Cliff Swallows. Many Baltimore Orioles as the Islands don't disappoint with that species. As always I thank everyone for coming and again I was treated to a very nice group of people. See you in September! Good birding, Jay Peterson Toronto Access to the Islands from the ferry dock at the foot of Bay Street. Island ferries are now on the spring schedule. $7 and $4.50 for adults and seniors respectively. [Ontbirds] OFO Presqu'ile/Peter's Woods Outing
Greetings Ontbirders 18 members and guests enjoyed a fun day of birding at Presqu’ile for the morning, then a side trip to Peter’s Woods in the afternoon. Bill Gilmour helped me lead this field trip which tallied about 95 species. At Presqu’ile we had a pretty good selection of expected migrants and residents, although warblers (14 spp) were a little scarce and some were heard only. An increasingly rare treat was seeing a beautiful Red-headed Woodpecker at the lighthouse, as well as at least 5 Red-bellied at various sites. Sadly Friday’s Piping Plover hasn’t been seen again but we did see 5 Semipalmated Plover and a number of Least Sandpipers as well as Killdeer and Spotted Sandpiper. A morning haze made seeing birds on the offshore islands a bit difficult but we managed to spot a number of Black-crowned Night Herons as well as Common and Caspian Tern, Ring-billed, Herring and Bonaparte’s Gull. Other fun birds were Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting. While I couldn’t muster much excitement about it, a male House Sparrow was seen at a feeder near the lighthouse - a somewhat rare bird in the park! Peter’s Woods is a beautiful old-growth forest north of Grafton. We took an hour to walk the loop trail and enjoy the huge pine, oak and maples and wildflowers. Birds were less active at this time of day but there were several Ovenbirds calling, as well as more Scarlet Tanagers. Thanks to everyone for taking part - it was great fun and I hope to see you all again soon, Cheers, Doug McRae Doug McRae P.O. This is an unexpected bird in this far eastern part of the province though I have twice before seen the species in this forest. A Solitary Sandpiper was observed in the adjacent swamp. Among the other 30+ species found up the forest trails (A1, A2, A3: map in parking lot) were Scarlet Tanager, Ovenbird, Least Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, and Eastern Wood-Pewee.
