[Ontbirds] Point Pelee National Park Migration Report - May 17, 2015
Good Birding, The Day started with dense fog and warm temperatures similar to yesterday. As it brightened up the Tip revealed some excellent birds. Both Yellow-billed and Black-billed Cuckoo were noted, and a Dickcissel flew off the Tip. A Nelson's Sparrow was seen just south of the solar panel, and a Worm-eating Warbler was seen just east of the interpretive centre at the Tip (where the Barn Swallows nest) and north of the 42nd Parallel sign. Patience may be required in order to see the Nelson's Sparrow and Worm-eating Warbler. Alder, Willow Yellow-bellied Flycatchers were also seen in good numbers and a Willow was singing. Yellow-billed Cuckoos are also being reported from the Woodland Tilden Trails. A variety of the more common migrating warblers, including a Blue-winged are being seen on both of those trails. There have been no reports from the north end of the park so far today, however the Glossy Ibis and American Avocet were reported from the Shorebird Cell of the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area this morning. [Ontbirds] Shorebirds in the GTA
Given the few number of decent shorebird habitat areas in the actual GTA, I thought I'd let any interested area birders know that there were a decent number of shorebirds at Claireville Reservoir when I left about 20 minutes ago. All of the birds were in the upper reservoir, which is currently largely mudflats and shallow water. I didn't pick out any rarities and not much in terms of variety today, but I'd estimate there were over 40 semipalmated plovers and likely over 100 peeps as well as a few yellowlegs, spotted sandpipers and killdeer. A scope is highly useful and probably necessary. Scan all shorelines slowly. Claireville Reservoir is located at Steeles and Finch, about 5 minutes north of Pearson Airport just off Hey 427. Directions: Hwy 427 North to Finch exit. Turn left (west) at the lights at the end of the offramp and follow Finch about 1-2km to the Waterpark entrance on your right. Parking is currently free (that will change whenever the Waterpark opens). Park at the NE corner of the lot and walk down to the reservoir. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Migration Report May 17, 2015
Good morning, There seems to have been almost complete turnover in the migrants present in Rondeau today since yesterday. South Point and Tulip Tree Trail have been reasonably productive, while the Pony Barn and Maintenance areas are very slow. We haven't received any reports from other areas as of yet. On South Point Trail this morning, several interesting species were noted including Prothonotary, Hooded, Mourning, Canada and Blue-winged. Unfortunately most of the warblers here are high up and far back in the woods, but good numbers are present. A Sedge Wren was found 300 metres past the parking lot. Prothonotary Warblers continue to be seen very reliably at the back of Tulip Tree Trail. Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email. eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share them with the username RondeauPPVisitorCentre for our records. More information on the park's nature programs and the Friends of Rondeau is available at the Friends' website: www.rondeauprovincialpark.ca. Directions: Take exit 101 from Highway 401 and drive South 16 km on Chatham Kent Road 15. Turn right and follow the signs to the park. Bird sighting information, bird checklists, bird feeders, and breakfast and lunch offered by the Friends can be found at the visitor centre. To reach the visitor centre from the park gate, travel 6 km South on Rondeau Road to Gardiner Ave., then follow it around the bend to the parking lot. [Ontbirds] Carden birding May 17/'15
Jim McKnight and I put in 3 hours of late morning birding at Carden, to the east of Beaverton, ON on Sunday. We were fortunate to have a singing SEDGE WREN go to sit for 10 minutes on a nearby cattail at the north end of the Wylie Rd. marshland. 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS flew low past the wren. Although others did see THE Shrike we had no luck. Other good birds that we saw and heard included BOBOLINK, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, COMMON SNIPE, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, RUFOUS-SIDED TOWHEE, BROWN THRASHER, NORTHERN ORIOLE, 3 OSPREYS sitting on their platform nests, and many others. [Ontbirds] Shorebirds and warblers in North Bay
Some 22 species of lovely wood warblers have now graced the North Bay area, most of them at the Laurier Woods reserve area, within the centre of North Bay. But, perhaps most unusually, the Callander lagoon, easterly cell is just about perfect for migrating shorebirds at the moment. Some 50 dowitchers, (most of them, if not all, short-billed) were there today, while Stilt, and Solitary Sandpipers, Dunlin, Wilson's Phalarope, and some 7 other, perhaps more common, shore-birds have been visiting there also recently. What next? The Callander lagoon is at the northerly edge of Osprey Links road, running due west for about one mile, just to the north of the town of Callander, just south of North Bay, - which is 3 1/2 stop-light free hours north of Toronto. dick tafel 705 472-7907 -- Dick Tafel Check - New Entry - March 14 - on my Direct Democracy blog: ( read other, older ones) at - http://youcancontrolyourgovernment.blogspot.com/ or check website - http://www.directdemocracytafel.com even, Find My e-Book ($3.00?) - http://www.directdemocracytafel.com/buy/ ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Rondeau Update May 17, 2015
Good afternoon birders, Most of Rondeau seems very quiet in terms of birds today, but Lakeshore Road has been very busy from the roundabout south. No rarities but excellent numbers of all the common species. The area just north of Bennett Rd. is particularly productive. Please park at places like Bennett Rd. rather than on Lakeshore Rd. itself and respect the many other users of this road. Prothonotary Warblers - at least 2 males and 1 female - continue to be seen very well at posts 7-9 on Tulip Tree Trail. Listening for their loud song will help you in very quickly locating these birds as the males sing very frequently. Thank you to everyone who contributed sightings and please continue to do so at the Visitor Centre or to me through email. eBird users submitting checklists from the park are encouraged to share them with the username RondeauPPVisitorCentre for our records.
