Total observation time: 6 hours

Official Counter:Natalie Cypher

Observers:Andrew Sturgess, Frank Kitakis, Rosemary Brady

Visitors:
No extra visitors today - just the regular crew.

Weather:
Rain was in the forecast, and was surrounding metro-Detroit most of the
day,but the count site never saw it until late. However, the low pressure
system seemed to keep most of the birds away. Winds were light from the
southwest and skies were cloudy all day.

Raptor Observations:
Very slow. No turkey Vultures or buteos - only the species that seem to
migrate no matter the conditions - a few Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks,
and a few Northern Harriers. A few local raptors were spotted throughout
the day - our Bald Eagles, Cooper's Hawk, and the Merlin. The most
interesting sighting was probably our local "tail-less" juvenile Bald
Eagle. It appears to have no tail, and this is at least the second time it
has been seen here!

Non-raptor Observations:
Some of our Lake Erie fall/winter species are starting to show up - more
lines of distant waterfowl were seen flying towards Lake Erie, several
Bonaparte's Gulls were hunting in front of us, and a couple of Horned
Grebes and one Great Black-backed Gull were seen in the lake.

Predictions:
Tomorrow could be a decent migration day following today's weather system.
Weather will be a pleasant fall day with temperatures reaching 50F, partly
cloudy, and NW winds.

Observers:Bob Hall-Brooks, Natasha Barlow

Visitors:
A couple visitors today, unfortunately no birds to show them.

Weather:
Light to moderate South component winds today, along with rain threats all
day seemed to make the raptors stay-put for the most part today.

Raptor Observations:
This slow day was made up mostly by the 9 Red-tailed Hawks that all were
slowly making their way along the North shore of the marsh.

Non-raptor Observations:
Dabbling duck numbers remain high, with Mallard and Gadwall remaining the
most numerous. For the full eBird checklist, go to
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32438080

Predictions:
Moderate N-NW winds and partially cloudy skies! Hopefully it will be a good
day!

[Ontbirds] Cattle Egrets

2016-11-08 Thread Michael Williamson
I appreciate all the feed back I've received quite the eye opener! With my
limited experience with this species I thought this could be a high water
mark for Essex County. In Durham Region I don't think these totals were
ever recorded.
Cheers and Good Birding
Mike
