[Ontbirds] Ruff, Bruce County

2017-04-21 Thread M Pickup via ONTBIRDS
Today Doug Pedwell, Stu Nutt, Nancy White and Mike Pickup along with many
members of the Bruce Birding Club viewed the Ruff between 1:30 and 2:00 pm in
the same location as reported by Jarmo Jalava yesterday. Many good lucks as it
was displaying amongst a group of Greater Yellowlegs. Thanks Jarmo for the
great find

(Grey County)
The male Ruff is present this morning in the same fields described yesterday.
It's been shifting between the three fields closest east to the bridge directly
south of the intersection of Grey-Bruce Line and Sideroad 1 near Chatsworth in
Grey County. It has been pretty distant in a field all morning and very tough
to spot without a telescope.

Good birding!

[Ontbirds] Little Blue Heron(s) - Sparta

2017-04-21 Thread David Pryor via ONTBIRDS
At least one and possibly both of the Little Blue Herons were present a short
time ago in Corner Corner's pond at 45045 Fruit Ridge Line near Sparta.

About 35-40 minutes ago, I inadvertently flushed one of the birds while walking
along the trail on the east of the pond. The bird glided across the pond to the
west side and turned north towards the bridge before I lost it. It did not
appear to me to be heading out of the pond as it was flying fairly low.

Mary Carnahan (the original finder of the birds) happened to be on the opposite
(west) side of the pond at the same time and also saw it. Mary advised to me
that it then circled and headed toward the south end of the pond. Mary also
indicated to me that she may have also had the second bird; although I only saw
one, she had a much better vantage point of the pond from where she stood.

It didn't appear as though the bird I saw was panicked so my feeling is that
both birds may likely still be present.

[Ontbirds] Algonquin Park Birding Report: 20 April 2017

2017-04-21 Thread Ron Tozer via ONTBIRDS
Significant melting of snow and opening up of some small lakes and ponds
occurred this week. All larger lakes remain ice-covered. New arrivals continued
to appear, but fewer than last week (see list below).

Fox Sparrows were at the Visitor Centre all week, peaking at seven birds on
April 20.

BOREAL SPECIALTIES

Spruce Grouse: Persistent snow and meltwater puddles in prime locations for
this species such as Opeongo Road and Spruce Bog Boardwalk are making searching
difficult.

Black-backed Woodpecker: One was seen along Opeongo Road on April 18.

Gray Jay: Opeongo Road north of the gate (now open) is the most reliable place
to look.

Boreal Chickadee: One was reported along the Logging Museum trail on April 18.

WINTER FINCHES

Purple Finch: A few were at the Visitor Centre feeder area this week.

Pine Siskin: There were up to 15 at the Visitor Centre on April 20.

American Goldfinch: One or two are still being seen at the Visitor Centre.

Evening Grosbeak: A few were still coming to the Visitor Centre seed, with 12
noted on April 20.

NEW ARRIVALS

April 13: Wilson’s Snipe

April 15: Swamp Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow

April 16: Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Apr1l 17: Common Loon, Killdeer, Chipping Sparrow

April 18: Broad-winged Hawk

April 20: Barn Swallow

Birders reporting records through eBird are encouraged to share their lists
with the Algonquin Park Bird Records account (APPbirds).

Ontbirds posts about Algonquin Park birds will be irregular, as deemed
appropriate, for the rest of the spring period. Good Birding!
