[Ontbirds] Snowy Egret Windermere Basin
The Snowy Egret was back at Windermere Basin early this afternoon in company with at least 5 Great Egrets. A noticably smaller bird with a dark bill. All the Egrets remained at the back of the pond as far from the viewing platform as possible. Heavy rain cut the viewing short. Entrance to Windermere Park off of Eastport Drive south of Port 25 gates. Happy Birding Mike ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] Dickcissel - Pelham
Two male Dickcissel perched on the wires at the corners where Moyer Rd and 15th St meet in the Pelham area. They perched and sang for 10 minutes at a time before moving locations. The spot is an Ebird hotspot and can be reached by exiting the QEW at Victoria Rd (24), travel south and turn left on Eighth Ave, then south on 15th St. There is an S curve where the road turns into Moyer which is the general area where the birds have been seen regularly. [Ontbirds] Posting for another person- apparent Magnifent Frigatebird in Toronto
Charlotte England says she's positive she saw a Magnificent Frigatebird at about 2:30pm at Woodbine and Queen at the beaches. She was walking back from grocery shopping so no photos. After Sarah Rupert posted a photo of the one down at Pelee and she said she saw a bird that looked exactly like this, and the one she saw had a white throat. Just posting to get the word out so people know that there's one possibly around in Toronto. [Ontbirds] Presqu'ile Birding Report for Week Ending June 29, 2017.
With a very few exceptions, the only birds found at Presqu'ile Provincial Park these days are the expected breeding birds, which have been present for the past many weeks. Nevertheless, the solstice is behind us, and there are historical records of early fall migrants at Presqu'ile in the first few days of July, notably SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, which are among the first shorebirds to return in the fall and which might find an ideal habitat in the algae build-up where the edge of the beach used to be. One pair of MUTE SWANS has successfully fledged a cygnet in the marsh despite record high water levels. While very few ducks have been reported in the past week, unusual sightings of unmated individuals in summer are not unheard of. In that category are an AMERICAN WIGEON this week a few kilometres outside the Park and a EURASIAN WIGEON that lingered from June 23 to July 1 seven years ago. Both COMMON GALLINULE and AMERICAN COOT have been seen in the marsh this week. An AMERICAN WOODCOCK was on the main entrance road on Tuesday. BONAPARTE'S GULLS have been staying surprisingly late this year, with at least two dozen on the "beach" on Sunday and two near the lighthouse yesterday. Near the lighthouse on Tuesday was an adult COMMON LOON closely followed for several hours by a second of that species whose plumage, behaviour, and perhaps size suggested that it might have been a young bird fledged this year, despite what seems to be a very early date. GREAT EGRETS are being seen regularly, and a GREEN HERON and a few BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS have also been seen. While passerine birds are ubiquitous in summer at Presqu'ile, none of those reported this week can be considered sufficiently unusual to merit mention. To reach Presqu'ile Provincial Park, follow the signs from Brighton. Locations within the Park are shown on a map at the back of a tabloid that is available at the Park gate. Access to the offshore islands is restrictedat this time of year to prevent disturbance to the colonial nesting birds there. Birders are encouraged to record their observations on the bird sightingsboard provided near the campground office by The Friends of Presqu'ile Parkand to fill out a rare bird report for species not listed there. Re: [Ontbirds] Frigatebird, Point Pelee drive Leamington
The Magnificent Frigatebird is still present and currently perched in a tree on the rock jetty at Sturgeon Creek (near the bridge a few houses down from Pelee Wings). It will likely fly again but it has been hanging around within a few hundred metres of Pelee Wings on Point Pelee Dr. near Leamington, Essex County. Good birding! [Ontbirds] Ottawa/ Gatineau-recent sightings to June 29, 2017
Ottawa Field Naturalists' Club Ottawa/Gatineau (50 Km radius from Parliament Hill) E. Ontario, W. Quebec Compiler: Gregory Zbitnew at sighti...@ofnc.ca June 29, 2017 The highlight of the week was a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, seen on Craig Henry on the 25th but not refound. Weather has been cloudy, mostly cool and damp, having had more of an effect of reducing enthusiasm among birders than on the bird population. Birding has been generally dull. The only bright spot is that we are probably at the nadir of seasonal migration now, which means that things can only get better. Believe it or not there could well be a few (very few) arrivals/ dispersals by next wee///k. Among the WATERBIRDS, LESSER SCAUP was seen on the Ottawa River on the 23rd, a BUFFLEHEAD at Shirley’s bay on the 25th, and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER there on the 28th. Some good news is that the marsh habitat at the end of Champlain Street has recovered to the extent that multiple SORA and VIRGINIA RAILS were calling. Likely this would be similar for other extensive marshes along the Ottawa River. A number of MARSH WRENS were seen this week at the Shirley's Bay Marsh. Some notable sightings were: 1. LEAST BITTERN at Baie McLaurin on the 24th, and 2 at Constance Creek also on the 24th. 2. There was a late continuing LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the Moodie Drive ponds until the 24th. 3. There have been a number of YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO sightings, in addition to the one on Thomas Dolan: one in Chelsea on the 26th, one in Carp on the 27th, and one at Shirley’s Bay on the 28th. 4. 3 RED CROSSBILLS near Lac McGregor on the 26th. 5. EVENING GROSBEAKS at the western edge of Larose Forest. The OFNC's Birds Committee no longer reports owl sightings on the Internet. We will continue to encourage the reporting of owls to sighti...@ofnc.ca for the purpose of maintaining local records. Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations. [Ontbirds] Brown Pelican - North of Point Pelee National Park, Jun 26, 2017
Hello All Sorry that there was a delay in getting this report out - I only got a call from the observer this am. On Monday evening, at 7 pm, a Brown Pelican was observed flying past a cottage on East Beach Road (this road runs south of Hillman Marsh toward Point Pelee). The observer is very familiar with this bird from visits to Florida, and was confident in the identification. The bird was observed flying south along the shoreline towards to park. Another wandering bird to keep and eye open for on Lake Erie, if you're out looking for the frigatebird. Good Birding! [Ontbirds] Black-crowned Night Heron - Guelph
Good evening, At about 7:10 pm I observed a Black-crowned Night Heron in a stormwater management pond in Guelph. I first noticed it perched in the trees, but it later came down into the pond to feed near a Great Blue Heron. I observed the bird for about 15 minutes before needing to finish my grocery store errands. To get to the pond from Highway 401: - Northbound on Hanlon Expressway - Turn right at Kortright Rd. - Turn right at Edinburgh Road S.
