Visitors:
A big thanks to Jen and Derek who've been the official counters for the
entire week despite some of the worst hawk migration weather any of us can
remember. And thanks to several others who also helped with today's count
including Tom B., Bob J. and Ronnie G.

Weather:
A few clouds first thing and then lots of sunshine and extremely warm with
a temp to a high of 31C. Winds were light all day and somewhat variable in
direction.

Raptor Observations:
A total of 312 birds tallied for the day... with the bulk being Sharpies
(181) and Am. Kestrels (114) along with a single Bald Eagle, a few Osprey
(4) and N. Harriers (5), a couple of Cooper's Hawks, Merlins (4) and a lone
Peregrine... the 2nd of the season.

Non-raptor Observations:
Some good non-raptors today... with Pileated, Red-bellied and Red-headed
Woodpeckers, RT Hummingbirds, Common Loons, Great Blue Heron and Belted
Kingfisher. A good flight of Blue Jays today with a total of 687.

Monarch count: 178
Also of note a couple of Pandora Sphinx catepillars... interesting given I
remember photographing one near Sharpie Alley several years ago around the
same time of year.

Observation end time: 14:00:00

Official Counter:Sean Jenniskens

Observers:Alfred Raab, Jim McCoy, Michael Williamson

Visitors:
A lady named Pat joined us on the tower for a few hours today; she is in
Hawaii where they have very few-none raptors so she enjoyed the few she got
to see from the tower. In addition, Alfred Raab of the Bruce Peninsula was
up on the tower for a few hours as well.

Weather:
Today was yet another scorcher on the tower, with a humidex of about 37
degrees Celsius (about 98 degrees Fahrenheit). Unlike yesterday, the sky
was beautiful for hawkcounting today, with lots of white patches against
the blue sky! Light winds all day, but the first hour in the morning they
were out of the north. They then switched to east and eventually
southeasterly.

Raptor Observations:
Despite the un-ideal winds for the majority of the day, it was a fairly
decent flight. We are still getting a few kettles of Broad-wings way out to
the north, though I feel that the main flight missed us. Today was a fairly
good day for Sharpies, with 240 being tallied. The big excitement of the
day was getting our first adult male Northern Harrier for the year! It
seems relatively early as the adult males usually don't show up in numbers
until we near the end of the season.

Non-raptor Observations:
There were 2630 Blue Jays counted today, which is the highest count so far
this season. Here is the link to the full days eBird checklist:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39395385 There were 38 Monarch
butterflies counted migrating today.

Predictions:
Southwesterly winds predicted for tomorrow. It should be another very
toasty day!

Re: [Ontbirds] Eurasian Collared-Dove at Rondeau PP

2017-09-25 Thread Tim Arthur via ONTBIRDS
I spent a good part of the day at Rondeau PP and did not refind the
Eurasian Collared-Dove that was found by Jim & Keith Burk yesterday.

A consultation prize was finding an immature Connecticut Warbler about 75
meters south of the first (only?) bench you pass on the South Point Trail.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove that Jim and Keith Burk found in Rondeau Park
earlier was still present when I left about 20 minutes ago. It had just
flown out of sight but from what I hear it has done that a few times
already today, always returning to approximately the same spot.

It's been hanging out on hydro lines and in trees between the dog beach and
house number 17108 Lakeshore Rd, slightly south of the Visitor Centre in
Rondeau Park near Blenheim, Kent County.

A big thank you to Jim and Keith, and Steve too of course, for getting me
on it so quickly... Seeya in Toronto!

[Ontbirds] ?? Magnificent Frigatebird?? - Presquile/ Prince Edward County

2017-09-25 Thread Tom Wheatley via ONTBIRDS
An eBird report of a Magnificent Frigatebird near Barcoven (east of Presquile
and west of Prince Edward County) just popped up on eBird.

Here is the link

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S39386522

It may be a false alarm, but could be worth having a look up if you are near
the shoreline.

I did not see this bird, just passing it on, and this sighting should be
considered unconfirmed until more reports come in.

Re: [Ontbirds] Fork-tailed Flycatcher in Toronto

2017-09-25 Thread Rick Eckley via ONTBIRDS
No Fork-Tailed Flycatcher at the Spit today - Monday - I searched from
11:30am-1:30pm in and around the location reported yesterday and was unable
to re-find the Flycatcher. Others searching said they had not seen it the
two hours previous, either. If anyone else goes searching, please keep the
rest of us updated. Directions in numerous previous posts are very precise.

Thanks,

Rick
