[Ontbirds] Kingston Area Birds: 19th - 24th Nov 2017

2017-11-24 Thread Mark D. Read via ONTBIRDS
Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of
MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders using eBird are encouraged to share their
sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email or post records
directly to me - contact details below. Please note that some sightings may
require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise.

Highlights:

Other than the cold snap last weekend, there has been no real change in the
weather. Likewise, no major highlights so just a quick reminder that the Owl
Woods (Amherst Island) are currently closed for hunting (20th Nov - 10th
Dec). Here are the brief highlights of the last week:

BRANT - a single bird was seen at Button Bay, Wolfe Island on 22nd.

KING EIDER - somewhat out of the area, an immature male was cooperative at
Wellington, Prince Edward County 19th-21st.

RED-THROATED LOON - 2 sightings this week; Bear Creek on 20th and Howe
Island on 22nd where an impressive continuing count of 152 COMMON LOON was
also tallied.

ICELAND GULL - the first returning bird of the season was seen at Heritage
Point, Bath on 20th.

SNOWY OWL - still scarce in these parts, 2 were seen on Amherst Island this
week with 1-2 also on Wolfe Island.

NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD - 2 continuing birds were seen on Amherst Island on
23rd.

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL - a single bird was noted near Verona on 23rd.

In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property in the recording
area, Kingston Field Naturalists has adopted the KFN Sensitive Sightings
Policy
. Please note that you must be a member of Kingston Field Naturalists
(KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve.

As always, a big thank you goes to all those who have submitted sightings
directly or via eBird.

Mark.

[Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird

2017-11-24 Thread Rick Eckley via ONTBIRDS

Being seen now near parking lot at end of Snyder’s Flats Road. Nice close
views. Be careful using the Rare Bird Alert map links. The one I used took me
to the other side of the river. Search Snyder’s Flats Conservation Area.

[Ontbirds] Greater Black Backed Gull - Mimico Waterfront Park

2017-11-24 Thread nrobertson770 via ONTBIRDS
If anyone in the area is interested there is an adult Greater Black Backed Gull
which can be seen from Mimico Waterfront Park which can be accessed from the
bottom (south end) of Superior Ave. in Etobicoke. It is amongst a mixed flock
of Herring and Ring-bills and is currently on Dock B of the Marina which is
marked with an orange cross and lifering. Best viewed from the first pedestrian
bridge going over the water, just east of Superior Ave on the waterfront trail.
The dock is directly south. Definitely need bins. I know it's not that rare but
I still find them impressive.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Large Alcid Species

2017-11-24 Thread Jon Ruddy via ONTBIRDS
I have what I believe is a large species of Alcid slightly beyond the limit
of my optics, resting on the water at Shirleys Bay. Low profile and strong
black and white theme are coming through in the heat shimmer. Just getting
word out. I am parked at the Shirleys Bay boat launch, scoping the river.
The bird is km's out in the river. Location of parking lot is off of
Carling Avenue, take Rifle Road to its dead end.

Good birding
