[Ontbirds] Blue Grosbeak (female) at Presqu'ile
Hello folks: Thank you to Doug McRae for making the initial posting about the female Blue Grosbeak at Presqu'ile. Further to the directions in Doug's email, the bird fed until dusk on the south side of Paxton Drive at the edge of a partially overgrown field. Park at the lighthouse parking lot, and then walk down Paxton to a semi-open area just past the first major bend in the road. The grosbeak fed constantly, and always returned to the same spot within 2–3 minutes after being flushed by the occasional car. When flushed, it never veered far from the roadside, often staying perched below eye level in nearby redcedars. Some of the many photos are posted on ebird. Multiple videos were also taken. Presqu'ile Provincial Park is well signed south of Highway 401 exit 509. If approaching from Highway 2, turn south on Ontario Street and then west (right) on Presqu'ile Parkway at the foot of Ontario Street. Good birding, Ian and Sofía ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO) - the provincial birding organization. [Ontbirds] The Big Sit Results
Hello Ontbirders Wondering how we did? Tom Hince, Paul Pratt, and myself just wrapped up our Big Sit fundraiser for the Ontario Field Orthithologists. We picked a spot on the west side of the Tip of Point Pelee National Park. Park staff (especially Sarah Rupert) kindly allowed early access to the Tip and were very supportive. Many friends dropped by through the day offering support and even adding a bird or two to the list. The weather was a challenge but we sheltered under the tailgate of the van when the rains came and Kathi Cavanaugh Hince brought us hot coffee and a hot lunch to keep us going. Michael A. Biro brought some hot potatoes and a gnatcatcher. Mike Runtz snagged the only Bay-breasted Warbler of the day. The top birds were a heard only Smith's Longspur (rattle call), six Red-throated Loons, 20 species of warblers, and all three scoters. Big misses were American Crow, Chimney Swift and Red-bellied Woodpecker. And drum roll please.. the grand total was 110 species smashing the previous Pelee Big Sit record! Thanks to all those who contributed to the OFO fundraiser (visit www.ofo.ca to contribute). It was fantastic for us to do a big day together after almost seventeen years (since breaking the North American big day record!).
