Visitors:
7 visitors made it to the tower today. Thanks for the help and good
company!

Weather:
Moderate winds were from the west northwest to begin the day. The
temperature was 8 C and cloud cover at 20%. Winds were from the northwest
from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm EST but returned to the west northwest. Wind
velocity decreased to light in the morning and early afternoon but became
strong by 2:00 pm EST with gusts of 22.3 mph recorded. Cloud cover
increased to 100% by 11:00 am EST, but gradually diminished to 60% in the
final hour. The temperature reached a high of 10 C at 1:00 pm EST.

Raptor Observations:
With the hint of north winds it seemed like many species were trying to
come through today. A good number of Red-tailed Hawks were flying over. 8
Red-shouldered Hawks were observed, most being adults. At least 3 adult
male Northern Harriers were observed, including one being harassed by a
Peregrine Falcon. Sharp-shinned Hawks continue to be seen in good numbers.

Non-raptor Observations:
A continuing first year male Baltimore Oriole was observed again today. A
House Wren was seen from above in an old nest. 2 Wilson's Snipe and 3
Greater Yellowlegs flew over. There was a notable absence of most Mute
Swans in the marsh today and the Gray Catbirds finally seem to be gone from
the bushes around the base of the tower.

Predictions:
Winds are expected from the northwest tonight and into tomorrow morning,
when at 10:00 am they will switch to the west for the rest of the day.
Sunny skies are predicted and a high of 9 C.

[Ontbirds] Ottawa: Brant geese

2018-10-17 Thread Jon Ruddy via ONTBIRDS
Ontbirds subscribers:

For the past two days, Brant geese have been foraging on the grass at
Andrew Haydon Park. Today, the flock numbered approx. 90 birds. They are
reliable at the west end of the park, near the shoreline of the Ottawa
River at Graham Bay. Sometimes they are on the westernmost inner pond, as
well. Over the past few days, I've tallied Brant as they've migrated past
my vantage point and have seen only one juvenile. When a flock of Brant
approach Andrew Haydon Park, they often swirl around a few times before
landing, availing good views of the upperparts for ageing. The single
juvenile joined the adults onshore and is currently foraging on the grass
with them. Not a rare occurrence here in Ottawa by any means, but an FYI to
those interested in enjoying Brant up close. Please do not hesitate to send
a text for an update on their status.

Directions: Andrew Haydon Park is located off of Carling Avenue. At the
lights, enter the park and turn left immediately. Continue to the western
parking area, then walk north to the western pond and north again to the
shoreline of the Ottawa River.

Good birding,
Jon

[Ontbirds] Two Cattle Egrets at Brighton.

2018-10-17 Thread Fred Helleiner via ONTBIRDS
This morning there are two Cattle Egrets at the Brighton sewage lagoon.
Exit # 509 from Highway 401 and continue straight south through downtown
Brighton until the road veers left and becomes County Road 64. The
lagoon is on the north side of the road about 500 metres past the
platform from which the constructed wetland can be viewed on the south
side. The inconspicuous access road is just past a small grove of
trees. While access through the gate is not permitted, the birds can be
seen from outside the chain link fence.

from the causeway. Scope recommended.

[Ontbirds] Harris's Sparrow continues: Smooth Rock Falls @ 10:00 A. M.

2018-10-17 Thread Angie Williams via ONTBIRDS
This first winter bird is *best viewed today from the sidewalk at 185 Ross
Road looking across the street.* It is under the feeder and cedar trees in
front of 186 Ross with a mixed flock of White-crowned, White-throated,
Lapland Longspur, etc. To approach the house at 186 will flush all the
birds. I will alert my neighbours that a few birders may be watching their
feeders from a reasonable distance. Feel free to call me if you are coming
to look (905 870 8584). Scope not really necessary...

Directions: From North Bay, drive 4 hours north to Cochrane on Highway 11;
follow hwy 11 north west at Cochrane (well signed); in Smooth Rock Falls,
turn right just after the Moose Motel onto Dupont, left onto Main St., then
right on Ross Road. *Please park on the roadside a little up the street so
as not to scare the birds*.
