[Ontbirds] Pakenham-Arnprior CBC Dec 26

2020-01-07 Thread Michael Runtz via ONTBIRDS
The Pakenham-Arnprior CBC held on Boxing Day was the compiler's 54th
consecutive one. Conditions
were next to ideal, relatively mild (-5 to -4) with light winds. The 32 field
observers (ten fewer than usual)
tallied 47 species, a total well below our ten-year average of 55. No new
species were added this year but
Short-eared Owl (6th count), Golden Eagle (6th count), Hooded Merganser (9th
count), and two Northern
Saw-whet Owls (9th count, ties the record high) were highlights. Notable
absentees were Common
Merganser, Snowy Owl, both species of waxwings, and Evening Grosbeak. A full
summary of the count can
be found at the Macnamara Field Naturalists' Club website: https://mfnc.ca
(look under "Participate").

[Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird continues

2020-01-07 Thread charmaine anderson via ONTBIRDS
The Mountain Bluebird was still present this afternoon at 3pm -- it varies
between being on Concession eight just east of Sideline 32 and North of 8 on
Sideline 30. It was also seen in a small puddle in the field on the north west
side of 8 and 30. A note about the location -- the whole area where the bird
is is actually part of the Rouge National Park and is regularly patrolled by
Park Staff. We met one of the wardens this afternoon -- they are very excited
to have the bird in the park and asked us to share that they will be monitoring
as people visit to make sure that no one is trespassing in the fields and also
to ensure that the bird isn't disturbed while it is feeding, they want to make
sure people aren't chasing the bird to get closer to it and interrupt its
ability to feed. There is an offence individuals' could be charged with for
interfering with wildlife under federal park regulations. That said, they are
thrilled to have people come see the bird. You may run into them while you are
there.

[Ontbirds] Harlequin Duck at Niagara Falls

2020-01-07 Thread Marcie Jacklin via ONTBIRDS
Hi

I observed the male Harlequin Duck above the Falls on the small roosting island
that they have preferred over the past few years. I found it after parking at
Dufferin Islands and walking north to the wooden bridge behind the second pond.

Regards
Marcie Jacklin

Directions: Take the 403 to the 420E exit towards Niagara Falls. Turn right
onto Stanley Avenue/RR 102 to the Niagara Parkway.

[Ontbirds] Mountain Bluebird

2020-01-07 Thread Geoff Carpentier via ONTBIRDS
right now a mountain bluebird is visible on concession 8 of Pickering just
east of sidelines 32. It's on the north side of the road in the far side of
a cornfield. I've been advised that you are not to trespass across the
cornfield as it is federal land.
